Search System
I suggest that Kestas can implement a searching system in phpDiplomacy, enabling us to search for players' names and game names, instead of using CTRL+F blindly everytime, hoping that you'll get the name you want in that page.

What do you guys think?

How long does it take to own a SC
How long must your army/fleet occupy a SC for it to be yours before you can leave it and it still be yours. I think it's one turn but not sure.
Onar (131 D)
12 Mar 09 UTC
So long as you hold it on the fall turn, it's yours.
DipperDon (6457 D)
12 Mar 09 UTC
If you own it after the Autumn move, it is yours.
DipperDon (6457 D)
12 Mar 09 UTC
I'm sorry...if you OCCUPY in at the end of the Autumn move, you own it.
xl prodigy lx (285 D)
12 Mar 09 UTC
So basically my first move I can move into it, then next turn i can move into another one and i'll occupy both of the SC's.
Onar (131 D)
12 Mar 09 UTC
No, you need a unit there in fall to keep it. That's how you claim ownership.
DipperDon (6457 D)
12 Mar 09 UTC
If you move in during spring, and out during fall, you won't own it.
Troodonte (3379 D)
12 Mar 09 UTC
People should read the rules before playing... this is an elementary rule in diplomacy.
I don't think that the forum is a good place for this kind of questions.
xl prodigy lx (285 D)
12 Mar 09 UTC
Sorry I'm not a hardcore diplomacy player ... its a game dude and sorry the answer wasn't on the web site.
Onar (131 D)
12 Mar 09 UTC
@Troodonte: That was harsh... I learned the rules by playing the game... best way to do as such.
Learning from veterans isn't bad, either... Just try not to discourage new players.
Troodonte (3379 D)
12 Mar 09 UTC
Hardcore diplomacy player?
You didnt get it: it is not possible to play this game without knowing this rule... as I said it is ELEMENTARY.
Almost the same as knowing the kind of moves that each piece can do in a chess game.

You don't ask in a chess forum what kind of moves can the horse do, right?
It is almost the same :)
Troodonte (3379 D)
12 Mar 09 UTC
Onar:
not discouraging, but i think that the majority of players that go CD are new players that start learning by playing and dont get it because they didnt leran the rules.
After that the game doesn't go well and give up.

ok...i admit it... better ask then go CD.
But I keep my idea: to play ANY game we need to know the rules. Just have to read.
I did it and I guess almost everyone that play here did it.
DipperDon (6457 D)
12 Mar 09 UTC
Troodonte, you've gotta be kidding. This is a diplomacy site forum. What better way is there for a noob to ask questions? Maybe he read the rules and wasn't quite sure. Let him get his answer, and then the thread will drop down and fall out of the forum. Lighten up.
Onar (131 D)
12 Mar 09 UTC
I actually never read the rules... I learned by doing. (Hence, my surprise at the idea that you could bounce into someone else's SC.)
Darwyn (1601 D)
12 Mar 09 UTC
but Troodonte, there was no reason to point that out. He asked a question and the people of the forum answered it. That's what the forum is here for. Was there another more important thread that this one could have made space for?

I think phpdip, compared to the other sites, can pride itself on its community.

You can ask a question here and have it answered in five minutes. If you don't like the question, don't answer. Don't be so harsh on the new players please.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
12 Mar 09 UTC
Can I just state my agreement with Darwyn etc. If you don't understand a rule, there is a simple choice: You ask, or you guess. If I was in a game with somebody who did not know the rules, I would rather that they asked, and so the game was won on the basis of skill, rather than they guess, so the game was perhaps won on the basis of another person's simple mistake, irrelevant to the actual skills of the game.

To look at your chess example, do you want to win because somebody didn't know the en passant rule? Worse, in a tournament, to see an opponent win a game, and so beat you, because another didn't know the en passant rule? I would hope not.
DipperDon (6457 D)
12 Mar 09 UTC
Troodonte, there does not appear to be anything in the Intro to Diplomacy about center ownership after Autumn. Can you find anything?

And the FAQ says to do exactly what prodigy has done, and come here to the forum to ask questions:

Before telling newcomers they should post here, maybe you should have read this in the FAQ. ;)

"The gameplay is quite self explanatory, but if you're unsure about something read the intro to phpDiplomacy, and feel free to ask for help or clarification in the public forum."
DipperDon (6457 D)
12 Mar 09 UTC
Before telling newcomers they should *not* post here and just read the rules... maybe you should have read the faq.
Draugnar (0 DX)

I'd much rather answer the question here than have him try to move through a territory and take two, only to get frustrated and go CD when he only gets one build.
Onar (131 D)

Can't we just let this topic die?
DipperDon (6457 D)
12 Mar 09 UTC
no. I'm bored, and feel like arguing.
Onar (131 D)
12 Mar 09 UTC
*sigh*
But it's so off-topic!
DipperDon (6457 D)
12 Mar 09 UTC
Good, an argument!

How is it "off topic" for a diplomacy forum?
Troodonte (3379 D)
12 Mar 09 UTC
Guys, I really didn't mean to be rude. It seems that I havve been, and for that I am sorry.

Before starting playing here I already knew (by reading else where) diplomacy rules. That's why I didn't know it was not well explained here. So it should be explained in the rules.

Apart from this, don't get me wrong, but I think people tend to superficielize (don't know if it is correct in english) things they do, that's why I said that rules are to be read in order to be able to play.

Once again, didn't mean to be rude or to cause a discussion.

We will let this thread live forever as an example to the world!

An example of a newbie asking a question and getting it answered.
An example of a classy apology and a classy forgiveness.
And best of all, an example of how much time we have on our hands!

You just gotta love it when you predict somebody's every move.
Just the feeling of knowing that your inside their head, and putting in your orders, knowing the outcome.

Then, going back to see the outcome and seeing just how badly you just decimated them, and all your assumptions were correct.

I recently joined a game which was about to end and looked like it could take a long time (CD needed). So I went, a pause was required by the leading player, we agreed. Now Italy doesn't want to unpause and said he won't come back to play. http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=7712
