Diplomacy during unit placing
Is diplomacy allowed during unit placing and retreats? I think the official rules say that diplomacy should not be allowed.

Display bug
I don't know if this is due to the DB rebuilds of late or if it has been reported before, but we have a difference in unit positions between the large and small maps. See following post.

Please unpause this.
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=7157

This game has been recently paused because of two banned multi-accounters, but one of their counterparts is still here and he has not logged on since Saturday.

Update on the recent bugginess
What is causing it, which games were affected and how, and what was done to fix it are inside

Bottom line is I think the problem is now sorted, and the affected games should now be back to normal

Thanks Kesta, you have done a great job

However, for:
http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=7543

The game is turned back to Spring 1906, but the problem indeed appear in the unit placing phase after Autumn 1905. Is that possible to turn that game one more round earlier? Thanks a lot!!!

We recently went over 2^31-1 = 2 147 483 647 orders entered. Quite a mind boggling landmark, but unfortunately it's also the largest number PHP can handle

So all of a sudden order IDs are stored in PHP as floats, which causes all sorts of nasty strange problems. This is why these weird problems started appearing all of a sudden for no apparent reason

There have been ~2 billion orders entered but there are only ~10000 active orders being entered at the moment, so the ID used for orders was knocked down to something PHP can handle

I've also checked other tables for similar problems and we were nearing the 4 billion limit for game messages, so that got bumped up too

7543, 7063, 7623, 7581 - These games had units which could retreat to places other units were already occupying, and were all moved back to the retreat phase where there were problems, and now the correct retreats are given

6258, 6720 - These games had the no units map problem, but the changes from yesterday caught the problem and after moving the order IDs back they processed correctly

There might be some games I missed, but I'm pretty confident this time that the problem itself is taken care of

Laoban; what problem happened during unit placement that needs the game to be turned back? The problem with turning it back any further is that you'll have to re-do a Diplomacy phase, which means you'll all know what each other did last time

Ah... One of the reasons I use GUIDs for transactional identifiers. It's amazing how quickly you can exceed even a double int.

For those who were around for the downtime; I tried to compact the IDs in a few tables, so that it'd be longer before we get back to 2^31-1 again, but something messed up so I restored from a backup I took after I got everything working

There has been a lot of downtime in the last couple of days but I think that's all over now, and in the next version there'll be more checks and redundancy (I'd rather be coding than just maintaining phpDip), sorry for the delays and thanks to the mods for pausing games etc while this was going on
kestasjk (99 DMod(P))

Also 6 hours have been added onto games process times to account for the downtime

Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))

Which means old games have had their orders deleted?
kestasjk (99 DMod(P))
10 Jan 09 UTC
Nope, old orders are archived in a different table, only the active orders table needs IDs so that they can be referred to and updated, old orders are just read to draw the map so no ID# is stored

We only have ~10000 active orders, but their ID# goes up one by one even as old orders are moved to the archive table, so they still had ID#s going over 2 billion
kestasjk (99 DMod(P))
10 Jan 09 UTC
Its the same thing with game messages, we have almost 4 billion of those but because they dont need to be referred to by their ID# there's no problem

Can some help this old guy with some translation guides. There are all these squiggly things popping up by you youngsters out there and it would be cool if there was some place on the web to get a translation. I sort of get the abbreviation stuff but I am falling behind the times (again) with these thingees (what are they even called).

Openings Discussions
Instead of doing the Russian openings and list all of them in great details in the format suggested by Edi. I chose to be lazy and have other players post an opening (Thier Favorite, the most Hated, etc.) So I don't need to do the typing :P.

Just curious. I play poker at the casinos an online all the time. I've also had small pot Dip home games, but the pot usually went to buy the pizza and beer when it was all said and done.

Supporting hold
I've noticed that very often two adjacent units will support into each others territories. The rules state that "A unit not ordered to move can be supported by a support order that only mentions its province". This seems to suggest that two adjacent allied units can both support the others hold, giving two provinces defending with a strength of two (barring support being cut).

Is this how it works?
