"by convoy", "by land"?
Is there a reason moving an army to an adjacent coastal territory I get the option to go "by convoy" or "by land"? Is there a good reason one would convoy a unit between adjacent territories?

to swap with a unit is one reason. Say you wanted the Army in Livonia to switch with your fleet at the SC of StPete, so that you could move to Norway (which your StP fleet can't do, being on the SC), The rules prohibit two units from switching places, but say you also had a fleet in Both, you can do the following:
F StPete Move to Livonia
A Livonia Move to StPete via convoy
F GoBoth Convoy from Liv to StPete

If you want to swap armies in, say, Portugal and Spain, a fleet in MAO can convoy the army from PRT to SPA, while the army in spain moves to PRT.

Plus, even if a move is stupid but is permitted, the system has to be set up to allow it

Or, lets say you hold Albania with a fleat in the Adriatic, but your enemy holds Triest and Serbia. You have reliable intel that He is going to hit Albania from Triest with support from Serbia so you Convoy (avoiding the head on hit and resulting dislodge that would destroy your army) and take Triest from right behind him.

In the old rules *pre 1999, there was a provision called the UNWANTED convoy. That evolved from the concept of interpretation based on 'the totality of the orders' which led to arguments to an outright allowance of the Unwanted Convoy. Under this interpretation you could convoy another player's piece from one adjacent province to another adjacent province without their consent.
This was actually done by myself in the early 1970's to win a tournament in Boston with the moves being:
France: Army Marseilles to Piedmont
Italy: Fleet Lyon Convoy Army Marseilles to Piedmont
Army Piedmont to Marseilles.
(Marseilles was the 18th supply center and the solo allowed me to win the game and the tournament).

While abusing the rule as a juvenile delinquent, I grew up and became very opposed to the Unwanted Convoy, which was taken to some extremes in the UK in their still used version at MonorCon which I will explain below.
Finally in the 1999 rule rewrite I was able to get the wording in that basically destroyed the Unwanted Convoy as a technique. However when doing coding it is now needed to specify if you intend to move by convoy or by land when there is any possibility of a convoy so as to avoid the confusion.

MANORCON in the UK, has the most obnoxious extreme version of the Unwanted Convoy that it still uses last I checked with David Norman. Under their extreme rules you can not only have an unwanted convoy but could also use that with dislodgment to stop the army from moving with this situation:

England:
Army Yorkshire to EDInburgh
France:
Fleet North Sea Convoy English Army Yorkshire to EDInburgh
Germany:
Fleet Helgoland to the North Sea
Fleet Holland Support Fleet Helgoland to the North Sea

What the French and the Germans are doing as a team is write a convoy for the English UNWANTED and then DISLODGE it and claim under Manorcon house rules, that since the convoy was dislodged the army does not move, so that the Fleet can then Retreat to EDInburgh.

The ManorCon Unwanted Convoy House Rule exists only in ManorCon and is used as a whipping point on the Convention everytime the international community goes there and we want to get nit picking on points of curmudgeon-ness,

Ofc, I personally just do it because the blue line looks cooler imo.

I've always thought the unwanted convoy to be stupid and unrealistic. I mean, would any army hop aboard a fleet without orders? If I were the president, premiere, prime minister, whatever and some one or two star decided to hop on a fleet of another nation without orders, I'd have him shot for treason or demoted to E1 and scrubbing toilets if firing squads were out of the question.

the "unwanted" convoy was only when you suspected that you're enemy was going to attempt the move anyway, obviously he has to enter the move order - you just enter a convoy order, so that you can manipulate it your way, as Edi described.

That makes sense would would make me rofl so hard if it happened.

Just because it works if you guess your enemy's orders doesn't make it at all realistic. No army would willingly hitch a ride aboard a fleet other than it's own nations without specific orders to that effect.

well it's imposible now because you specify via convoy or via land. That was the resolution to it

As I recall when I did it in Boston there was this stunned silence when the orders were read *mine being last. And then I piped in with
"Well that was funny, first round of drinks on me" and I immediately walked out when the delayed laughter started and the rush to catch up with me going across the street.

We just started a game (League of Nations) and it is Autumn 1901. While I realize that Austria might have accidentally missed his turn, he has also done no correspondence at all, leaving me to wonder if he's really going to play at all.

Phpdiplomacy game stats - best country to play
I ran a quick script out of curiosity to see which countries win the most on phpdiplomacy. Just got the "finished games" pages and parsed the HTML. Turkey turns out to be the best country! Full stats below the fold.

Another Thread about PPSC vs WTA
The more I play on this site the more I wish I could get more WTA games going. I just really don't feel like PPSC games provide the Dip experience that is intended by the game.

They are still good practice, but WTA games are where its at in my opinion. Sure wish it was easier to get people to join them...
