Swearing on the forum
I'm against any blanket ban on swearing but could we perhaps try to avoid it in the first post of a new topic? Bear in mind that anyone coming to this site for the first time will see the forum page and I'm not sure it sends out the right message.

Question
Ok I've seen a few game variants like the "Winner Take All" and league matches. Are all these special request games that need to go through Kestas? I don't see any options for variants, including less then 7 players.

Kestas - please ban these morons - part two
mapleleafrulz has taken over a cd in one of my games and has posted a global message in a pathetic attempt to paint me as a multi. This is totally malicious; well beyond the childish moniker previously used by this individual.
As this idiot, and mapleleafisiacnt, are likely the same idiot and logging on from a country other than Canada, just ban him/her and every other user from the IP.
The really sad thing about all of this is that people with whom I have played in many games are actually questioning my integrity.
As far as my original thread goes, the inmates have taken over the asylum.
They are proud of it.
Pathetic.
How about a response?

Grudgematch Variant
What we need is a game variant to solve the question that has been gnawing at us:
Who is better, Sicarius or Mapleleaf?

Only 2 rules:
1. Sicarius and Mapleleaf are at war no-matter-what
2. All other players must play in an un-biased manner

Hopefully they will both accept the challenge

No orders to submit in this phase, but...
The game "Diplo2009" just advanced, and now it is the retreat phase of Autumn 1906. None of my units were displaced, but the game tab still shows up at the top of my screen with a red X next to it, and the game page itself shows a red X next to my name. Where orders would be submitted, it says, "You have no orders to submit in this phase."

Does this mean the game will wait 24 hours before it advances again just because I can't submit (and finalize) any orders that would change this red X to a green check mark?

How are point accumulated?
I am raising a true question, no accusation, no polemics.
I am playing a game where one player (Qing Shi Hwang) has jumped from 100 points to 1341 points overnight (currently he has invested all his pot in a joinable game).
The interesting issue comes if you take a look at his profile: only three survivals, the biggest of which is with 1 SC in 352 pot game, the other two survivals being in games with pots less or equal to 70 points.
Where do the 1341 points come from?

I suspect a multi-acct or metagame.
In my game, run to the hills.

Player 1: Qin Shi Huang who came in and played Turkey who was in CD (left with 1 SC in Munich)
Player 2: venek who played Russia

Reason my suspicion were raised
1. QSH came in to play turkey (left with 1 SC not in home territory)
2. Came in entered orders, 6 min later, venek entered his orders
3. Russia had 1 unit in Berlin, Turkey had 1 unit in Munich. Somehow Berlin managed to move into Munich
4. Looking at QSH record, he has played 79 games of which he has survived 3 and won none. He however has 210 points. This suggests he takes part solely in CD games for the benefit of a group of people to use as a dummy account.

Venek or QSH, could you kindly answer the allegations?

Kestasjk, could you please look into this? I understand you're not in development anymore, are we working on the code to build moderators?

I'm planning to move on from phpDip for a couple of reasons (mostly, in short, realizing my code had been plagiarized made me realize phpDip has achieved what I wanted it to)

Please read this notice: http://phpdiplomacy.net/roadmap.php

Quick game during a lazy sunday
So a bit more notice this time... If anyone is around Sunday for a quick turnover game, I would be keen to set one up from around 10:30 - 11:00 BST(British Summer Time). If you are interested then please post a message and then we can all re-confirm we are logged on on Sunday morning and go for it.

Flamers... your sentiments on this are already noted and do not need repeating here thanks :)

I learnt a good Russian word yesterday... Maskirovka
"...a sequence of moves contrived to convince an opponent that certain of his vital pieces are at risk. He reacts by preparing for an offensive which never materialises; instead, his adversary strikes elsewhere, as [the adversary] had first intended." (Lawrence James, Raj)

Sound familiar? The great thing is that I can now say it all in one word.

Guns Germs and Steel
This book was recommended here, and now I have a question about something I've read in it that I don't understand.
Treefarn (6094 D)

This is a fascinating book. It is the most boring book I've really truly enjoyed. Hard to explain. Some of the topics, such as how a pea increases the thickness of its skin, sound so incredibly boring, but when the evolution is explained to you, it really is fascinating.

But anyway, the question...

In the chapter, the Lethal Gift of Livestock is the following:
'One common response of ours to infection is to develop a fever. Again, we're used to considering fever as a "sympton of disease".... But regulation of body temperature is under our genetic control and doesn't happen by accident. A few microbes are more sensitive to heat than our own bodies are. By raising our body temperature, we in effect try to bake the germs to death....'

So if raising our body temperature occurs to fight off microbes, why do we take medicine to reduce our body temperate back to normal???

I've only seen the documentaries, which were interesting.

To be honest I don't know if we do take medicine to reduce our body temperature :-| Not for things like colds and flus anyway

Wise people don't. They keep themselves as warm as possible and drink a lot of fluids to replace the water lost as sweat.
GuanShao (537 D)

The medicine you take actually increases your temperature dramatically during the first hour or two that you take it, and then it makes it cool off faster.

FACT.

Actually, I don't know. Wise people do as Menacen said, keep bundled up and drink fluids.
Treefarn (6094 D)

Well, even Advil and Tylonel are advertised as 'fever reducers'. Reducing your fever doesn't sound like a good thing, according to this book.

Live with the fever up to 102 deg F. Above that, take something to control the fever.

And never dismiss the placebo effect.

I usually take medicine and spend the day in bed if I can't do anything else, or I do basically everything else except spending the day in bed.
q93 (373 D)

We as a society do a lot of things with medicine that do much less to help our bodies fight the illness and more to control the symptoms to make ourselves more comfortable.

The only real reason to reduce the fever is that it becomes dangerouse when it is above 102, especially in Adults. But consider we also take decongestants, which effectivly removes one of your bodies means of disposing of germs.

You should take expectorants, never decongestants unless it is to help you sleep once a day. Usually it is best in a cough syrup. Expectorants break up the decongestant and make looser so it flows more.
Embrace the fever! Unless its hemorrhagic.

proteins denature, loose function, agregate and eventually kill a cell in high temps. there is a whole set of proteins (heat shock proteins) dedicated to sequestering unfolded proteins so they don't get destroyed and can refold once temperatures have been reduced. however, because of the variety of secondary structures in protein some will denature at higher temperatures than others (there is dna polymerase (a protein that copies dna) from bacteria that lives in thermal vents who's ability to not denature in extreme temperatures has been the key to a lot of modern biochemistry and molecular biology. with out it there would be no PCR). ANYWAY, the point is, because bugs are a small number of cells, it's possible they would die before a human would (or it's possible they have not had the necessary pressures to evolve proteins that can survive high temps). The idea is to get hot enough that you kill the bug, but not so hot that you kill yourself. that's why people with extreme fevers have to take ice baths etc.
