convoy question
if i'm {convoying into rome from tunis via tyrrhenian sea} with {support from tuscany and ven}, and [rome is moving to the tyrrhenian sea] with [support from the ionian sea] what is the outcome?
jakethesnake (1112 D)
16 Jun 08 UTC
my guess is that rome gets bumped, but i wasn't sure if the adjudicator would first kill my convoy because rome with support from the ionian dislodges the tyrrhenian sea.

my head hurts, i'm gonna go take some drugs and hope that i'll recieve some clarity from the people.

I'm pretty sure that your fleet in the Tyrhennian fails and is displaced. The convoy does not work and your army stays in Tunis.

GamesByEmail has a pretty good adjudicator that you can use to test out scenarios. Here's this one:

http://GamesByEmail.com/Games/Politics/Judge#0532m4002722S47353432S05403510m73040424722c3504822S47356612S35737322C4735

It appears that the convoy and move fail, but the fleet in the Tyrrhenian Sea is not dislodged.

Aric, I don't think that's the correct result at all. The convoyed attack has two supports, whereas the attack by the fleet in Rome has only one support.

Thus, one of two things are possible. Either the convoyed attack is assumed to be coming across the Rom-Tyn border, in which case it overwhelms the other attack and takes Rom, or it isn't coming over any particular border, in which case Tyn is dislodged. I can't see an interpretation of the rules which would allow Tyn to stay put but the convoy to fail.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

indeed, menace is correct.

in this case however there are two possible solution each of which is self consistant.

Though i think the fleet gets dislodged.

the support from tuscany and venice doesn't really matter.
What's more interesting is if ion is moving to tyr with support from a fleet in rome.

here if the convoy succeeds the support is cut, and the convoy succeeds.
But if the support is not cut, then the convoy fails, and the spport is not cut...
again no paradox, just two possible resolutions.

i know there are paradoxs, i just can't think of an example right now.
Churchill (2280 D)

This isn't a paradox.

Neither is it an attack from the TYS-Rom border. In a correct implementation of the rules an attack via convoy is direction-less. this allows the unit that would normally have lost to a powerful convoying force to attack a chain in the convoy.

The solution is simple: the fleet in TYS is dislodged and the convoy fails.

Even though you had a 3 v 2 situation, the fact that a convoy was needed balanced the whole situation out, as the opponent was simply able to break the weakest part of the move (the convoying fleet). Had you used a fleet (if the unit in Tus was a fleet) to support the hold in TYS the attack on your convoying fleet would have failed and your move succeeded. I'm guessing that you had an army in both Tus and Ven, and a very shrewd opponent who saw breaking the convoy as his only option.

To create a paradox, a convoyed army has to attack a unit that is supporting the attack on one of the convoying fleets. This is not what happened.
menace3society (927 D)

Churchill, do the rules actually say anywhere that a convoyed attack is directionless? Certainly, it makes the most sense, but in ambiguous situations it's always better to have a specific rule to support.
Churchill (2280 D)
18 Jun 08 UTC
The rules do not actually state that a convoyed attack is directionless, I am saying this to save anyone the trouble of considering it. Even if you assign a direction to a convoyed attack (presumably the direction of the last fleet involved in the convoy-note that this could be more than one if multiple routes were specified!), attacking a fleet that was part of the convoy is a separate event to the attack by the convoying army. Thus assigning a direction on a convoy is pointless.

If you were to consider that the fleet and the convoying army were a unified force then it seems that a convoyed army should have the support of the last fleet that convoyed it. I guess, however, that you are thinking that a simple convoy could be repelled by a 3 (attacking army and 2 supports) on 3 (defending fleet attacking convoying fleet with 2 supports) type of attack. As the convoyed army attacking the territory and the fleet attacking the fleet performing the convoy are two separate events (as the fleet does not participate in the attack on land and the army does not defend the fleet at sea) there is no use for a direction.
Churchill (2280 D)
18 Jun 08 UTC
What I'm trying to say in short is that no rule specifies that there is no direction, but assigning a direction to a convoyed attack would not change the interpretation or execution of any other rule.
Katsarephat (100 D)
18 Jun 08 UTC
What if you just considered the attack to be (in this case) from Tun-Rom? In that case, F Rom is not trying to cut support for an attack against itself, because F TYR is not supporting the attack. Therefore Rome's attack succeeds, the convoying fleet is dislodged, and the convoy itself fails.
Katsarephat (100 D)
18 Jun 08 UTC
Also, the adjudicator does require one to post that the support for a convoy is (in this case) A Tus S A Tun-Rom, rather than A Tus S F TYR-Rom or a Tus S A TYR-Rom (the latter of which not even making sense). I think it's less confusing if you think of that as the vector of attack, and just ignore the convoy route.
Churchill (2280 D)
18 Jun 08 UTC
I like the way you put it. You are right to say that the attack comes from the origin of the army.
Churchill (2280 D)
18 Jun 08 UTC
This is another of the game's astonishingly well written rules as otherwise, if given two or more routes for a convoy, players would argue incessantly about the outcome of a particular move. Additional rules would be required and the whole convoy move would be too complex (as if paradoxes aren't bad enough).

I'm against any blanket ban on swearing but could we perhaps try to avoid it in the first post of a new topic? Bear in mind that anyone coming to this site for the first time will see the forum page and I'm not sure it sends out the right message.

Ok I've seen a few game variants like the "Winner Take All" and league matches. Are all these special request games that need to go through Kestas? I don't see any options for variants, including less then 7 players.

Kestas - please ban these morons - part two
mapleleafrulz has taken over a cd in one of my games and has posted a global message in a pathetic attempt to paint me as a multi. This is totally malicious; well beyond the childish moniker previously used by this individual.
As this idiot, and mapleleafisiacnt, are likely the same idiot and logging on from a country other than Canada, just ban him/her and every other user from the IP.
The really sad thing about all of this is that people with whom I have played in many games are actually questioning my integrity.
As far as my original thread goes, the inmates have taken over the asylum.
They are proud of it.
Pathetic.
How about a response?

Grudgematch Variant
What we need is a game variant to solve the question that has been gnawing at us:
Who is better, Sicarius or Mapleleaf?

Only 2 rules:
1. Sicarius and Mapleleaf are at war no-matter-what
2. All other players must play in an un-biased manner

Hopefully they will both accept the challenge

No orders to submit in this phase, but...
The game "Diplo2009" just advanced, and now it is the retreat phase of Autumn 1906. None of my units were displaced, but the game tab still shows up at the top of my screen with a red X next to it, and the game page itself shows a red X next to my name. Where orders would be submitted, it says, "You have no orders to submit in this phase."

Does this mean the game will wait 24 hours before it advances again just because I can't submit (and finalize) any orders that would change this red X to a green check mark?

How are point accumulated?
I am raising a true question, no accusation, no polemics.
I am playing a game where one player (Qing Shi Hwang) has jumped from 100 points to 1341 points overnight (currently he has invested all his pot in a joinable game).
The interesting issue comes if you take a look at his profile: only three survivals, the biggest of which is with 1 SC in 352 pot game, the other two survivals being in games with pots less or equal to 70 points.
Where do the 1341 points come from?

I suspect a multi-acct or metagame.
In my game, run to the hills.

Player 1: Qin Shi Huang who came in and played Turkey who was in CD (left with 1 SC in Munich)
Player 2: venek who played Russia

Reason my suspicion were raised
1. QSH came in to play turkey (left with 1 SC not in home territory)
2. Came in entered orders, 6 min later, venek entered his orders
3. Russia had 1 unit in Berlin, Turkey had 1 unit in Munich. Somehow Berlin managed to move into Munich
4. Looking at QSH record, he has played 79 games of which he has survived 3 and won none. He however has 210 points. This suggests he takes part solely in CD games for the benefit of a group of people to use as a dummy account.

Venek or QSH, could you kindly answer the allegations?

Kestasjk, could you please look into this? I understand you're not in development anymore, are we working on the code to build moderators?

I learnt a good Russian word yesterday... Maskirovka
"...a sequence of moves contrived to convince an opponent that certain of his vital pieces are at risk. He reacts by preparing for an offensive which never materialises; instead, his adversary strikes elsewhere, as [the adversary] had first intended." (Lawrence James, Raj)

Sound familiar? The great thing is that I can now say it all in one word.
