I am playing with Treefarn, who has won four of six completed games so far. Does this site have a rookie-of-the-year award? Does anyone else know of such a good streak at the beginning of a "career"?

Question about a move in game id #3643
My army in Ruhr moved to Munich with support from Burgandy.
Germany moved Holland to Ruhr with support from Kiel and moved Munich to Burgandy.
That being the case, shouldn't I hold Munich with my army from Ruhr?
Any help or explanation would be appreciated.
Thanks

Is it possible to link Crete into the same colour as Greece and Sardinia the same colour as Rome?

Stagger the Lier
In the game Stay on These Roads,
http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=3326&msgCountry=Global

I am playing England, and Stagger the Lier is Turkey, we have reached an agreement of drawing, then a new Russia came in, we fought till he died, still bearing the draw agreement, now that he has 17 and i have 17, i asked about our agreement, and its gone. I played so that we are going to have a nice draw, he then takes such advantage of a good ol' agreement and fights....

He said to Me "Autumn 1911: Yes, we'll draw once Russia is gone."
I asked the Public "Autumn 1912: Are we for a DRAW?"
He replied "Autumn 1912: I'm afraid not. sorry. But you'll still get a ton of points."

(Public Messages can be confirmed by Wombat, playing the Russian character)

NEVER, NEVER, PLAY STAGGER THE LIER

Totally disagree. He is within his rights to make this offer then renege on it.
If I refused to play people who back stab, I'd have to multi account.
Chairman Mao (340 D)
04 May 08 UTC
Draw was first proposed when it was a russian-English-Turkish split when we were 12-11-11 situation, when there was a new Russia, then we decided (agreed) to fight him and then draw.....
Chairman Mao (340 D)
04 May 08 UTC
It's not backstab......I can be sure you can distinguish backstab from this.....

I think it is simply that these lies spoils the game (its not a lie of wisdom, its a lie of cheat, and well, I dont mind losing few points, because I am not the sort of people who betray your personality for a few points.....)

Points are not my major concern....cuz the maximum i lose is say 40 or so.

I always knew that this sort of thing would happen with people who are happy to accept an artificial draw. To put it simply, it isn't diplomacy to do this.

I agree with Figlesquidge. It is a backstab, just a backstab that happens to be right at the end of the game. That is just tough. Anyone is allowed to do and say anything whatsoever, and he has. You have got your comeuppance for violating Noodlebug's law. Live with it.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
04 May 08 UTC
The offer was within the game, and didn't drift out of it in any way.
If he had offered you two SC's from the edge of his nation then not let you have them you would call it a stab. The only difference is that this time he'll be taking his 18th SC so it will give him the victory
Darwyn (1601 D)
04 May 08 UTC
I agree with figlesquidge. It's tough getting used to stabs, but agreement breaking is part of the game.
Chairman Mao (340 D)
04 May 08 UTC
You all seem unhappy about this, then leave it.......

at least that's what I think........

I am more than ready to take this, just what I think should not be done.

An outside topic: How many historical incidents are when a ceasefire/peace agreement is signed when firing continued...?
figlesquidge (2131 D)
04 May 08 UTC
Loads? Especially when the agreement was taken reluctantly.
Heard of the treaty of Versailles?

Oh, and Noodlebugs Law - nice term. Is that the new name for:
1. Survive
2. Stop someone else winning
3. Win
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
04 May 08 UTC
And in this case he can do all three... so will.
menace3society (927 D)

Them's the breaks, kid. If you don't like treachery, don't play diplomacy.
Darwyn (1601 D)
04 May 08 UTC
"How many historical incidents are when a ceasefire/peace agreement is signed when firing continued...?"

there's quite a few actually...the Battle of New Orleans is one example.
Chairman Mao (340 D)

Treaty of Versailles...hmm........
the factors after ToV was so great that it didnt really bound it, its like, well, I agreeing on something, then someone with a completely different political view took over my country and say....I am not for the agreement.....

Labond (140 D)
04 May 08 UTC
Another way of stating mapleleaf's point is 'make sure nobody can take advantage of you', as it is silly to defend an area that will not be attacked (because nobody will gain from attacking it).
menace3society (927 D)
04 May 08 UTC
Sir Winston lays out the problems with the Versailles treaty neatly in his memoirs. Basically, you take from a state its best sources of raw materials (Alsace-Lorraine, Saarland, Silesia), some of its crop-producing regions (parts of Western Poland), and eliminate most of its heavy industry (military equipment), you can't also ask it pay enormous reparations, because the economy is too weak to support such a drain. Had the Powers of Europe chosen either territory or reparations, World War II probably could have been avoided.

It also helped the National Socialist cause that the governments were unwilling to enforce the measures once push came to shove.

Good analysis of Churchill's work. He was done down by many. The Dardanelles was not his fault either.
Croaker (370 D)

Back to the subject at hand, Turkey has an obvious win on the board. Why would he settle for a draw?

He fibbed? In Diplomacy? What exactly were you expecting?
canaduh (1324 D)
04 May 08 UTC
Yup. I am afraid that them's the breaks.
McCain (100 D)
04 May 08 UTC
Heh, I think we was the player that ruined my biggest pot game. I was in an A-R alliance and he was France and Allied to England. I saw that, if the alliances continued the way they were going, we'd lose, so I stabbed Russia with England supposedly going to stab France. England didn't stab France for a long time(understandable), but when he did, Stagger made no effort to defend himself or his home SCs, choosing to keep fighting me. He claimed he'd get more points that way, but instead, England got to 26 SCs.

Yeah, what he did is completely ok by me.

And figle, I've been posting those priorities since before Noodlebug joined! Although I have them in opposite order, but the meaning is the same. I always had...
1. Win... failing that,
2. Don't let anyone else win... and failing that,
3. Survive, although I only added this after the points system came into play.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
04 May 08 UTC
Well that is stupid if he let them just take his SC's, and poor play. However, offering a draw as bait could be considered a very clever tactic.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
04 May 08 UTC
Chris, you beat me to say it. And yes I know you've been saying it longer than Noodle, but you didn't try to bite peoples heads off when they didn't do it. Also, I didn't say it first. Apparently it first came up in the Revelstone chat
You should have seen it coming, I mean his name is Stagger the LIAR for goodness sake.
Feckless Clod (777 D)
04 May 08 UTC
I understood that he'd lied, claiming to be Stagger the Lier. There's a Lier in Norway, and another in Belgium. I'm not sure which is THE Lier. Mind you, knowing Stagger, he's probably the other one.
Churchill (2280 D)

This is perfectly cricket as far as Diplomacy strategy goes. In fact, isn't this like breaking an agreed DMZ or violating an NAP?

Hi everyone,

I was surprised to see my name in a heading as I scrolled down the Forum tonight. Then I began to read. . .
. . .
. . .
(I'm a slow reader.)

Anyway, I'm relieved that most of you feel my actions are in keeping with the spirit of the game. I'd feel bad if I was breaking an unwritten code.
Churchill (2280 D)
05 May 08 UTC
I don't think you did anything that is not outside the normal Diplomacy gameplay. Still I'm not happy about you going CD playing Italy with the new player steamrolling me! Still, I don't see anything wrong in this game.
Stagger (2661 D(B))

Hi Churchill,
What game are you referring to?
Wombat (722 D)
05 May 08 UTC
...

I'm Russia in that game right now, so I'll explain the situation...

I bought in accidently. Everyone does that- Rus had 11 units so it looked better than nothing.

However, they ganged on me- and now I'm down to one. Both countries WERE looking for a draw, but then Turkey and I worked out a deal. Very simple.

Chairman- don't forget that you kept lying to me too... =]

My Internet is broken. (unprintable words go here)
So, yeah. For some reason, my Internet has become unbearably slow recently - to the extent that it takes fifteen minutes to load a single page. ETA until fix is unknown. I should be able to finish both of my current games, but this means I'm going to have to pull out of the UN game, which is really inconvenient as I joined yesterday. I apologize for that, and hope you'll forgive me.

This is for the coders:
Is it normal that I can input this order, "F(NTH) s A(Den) - SKA" into the system and finalise it. I have put this in step by step and updated after each new selection before finalising.

Drawn Games - How are points allocated?
I was under the impression that in drawn games the pot was shared out equally between all participants in the draw.... in this game it still seems to be shared out according to point per supply centre.

http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=3027

Pot = 925

If i'd known I'd have been tempted to scrap a bit harder to push dangermouse back - though would still have ended in a draw.

If a French fleet from Marseilles sails to Gulf of Lyon, and an Italian fleet from Gulf of Lyon sails to Marseilles, do the bounce, or trade places?

Finally, can an army in N. Africa move to Spain SC, and can a fleet do it as well?

Ender's Game
I know quite a few players on this site are a big fan of this book/series and i came across this essay thew other day about the moral underpinnings of the book, thought you might like to read it.
http://www4.ncsu.edu/~tenshi/Killer_000.htm

in fact i read that book several years ago i didn't like it that much. oh yes the main character was endearing and all but i felt the book was aimed to please a teenage market bracket. not really my cup of tea, i prefer hard science fiction.
