Has anyone ever started this well?
I am playing with Treefarn, who has won four of six completed games so far. Does this site have a rookie-of-the-year award? Does anyone else know of such a good streak at the beginning of a "career"?

Question about a move in game id #3643
My army in Ruhr moved to Munich with support from Burgandy.
Germany moved Holland to Ruhr with support from Kiel and moved Munich to Burgandy.
That being the case, shouldn't I hold Munich with my army from Ruhr?
Any help or explanation would be appreciated.
Thanks

Why is is that Crete and Sardinia remain neutrally coloured throughout the game?

Is it possible to link Crete into the same colour as Greece and Sardinia the same colour as Rome?

Stagger the Lier
In the game Stay on These Roads,
http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=3326&msgCountry=Global

I am playing England, and Stagger the Lier is Turkey, we have reached an agreement of drawing, then a new Russia came in, we fought till he died, still bearing the draw agreement, now that he has 17 and i have 17, i asked about our agreement, and its gone. I played so that we are going to have a nice draw, he then takes such advantage of a good ol' agreement and fights....

He said to Me "Autumn 1911: Yes, we'll draw once Russia is gone."
I asked the Public "Autumn 1912: Are we for a DRAW?"
He replied "Autumn 1912: I'm afraid not. sorry. But you'll still get a ton of points."

(Public Messages can be confirmed by Wombat, playing the Russian character)

NEVER, NEVER, PLAY STAGGER THE LIER

...then please do not join.

My Internet is broken. (unprintable words go here)
So, yeah. For some reason, my Internet has become unbearably slow recently - to the extent that it takes fifteen minutes to load a single page. ETA until fix is unknown. I should be able to finish both of my current games, but this means I'm going to have to pull out of the UN game, which is really inconvenient as I joined yesterday. I apologize for that, and hope you'll forgive me.

Possible order bug?
This is for the coders:
Is it normal that I can input this order, "F(NTH) s A(Den) - SKA" into the system and finalise it. I have put this in step by step and updated after each new selection before finalising.

Now that I'm getting my ass handed to me in the GFDT Final, I'm up for a team game.

Who's interested and what are teams? Is there a standard for this?

When we have seven interested people, I'll set the game up.

Drawn Games - How are points allocated?
I was under the impression that in drawn games the pot was shared out equally between all participants in the draw.... in this game it still seems to be shared out according to point per supply centre.

http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=3027

Pot = 925

If i'd known I'd have been tempted to scrap a bit harder to push dangermouse back - though would still have ended in a draw.
kestasjk (95 DMod(P))
30 Apr 08 UTC
I think it does split the points up equally, how do you know it didn't?
Braveheart (2408 D(S))
30 Apr 08 UTC
Pot = 925; 925/3 = 308 points

I actually received 245 points which is basically:
My SCs Count/Total SCs * Pot
= 9/34 * 925
= 245
TinTin (0 DX)

so its not a draw- just a ppsc?
Braveheart (2408 D(S))
30 Apr 08 UTC
the game was drawn.
it shows up in my stats as a draw too.
my issue is just with the point allocation being PPSC rather than an EQUAL 3-WAY split.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
30 Apr 08 UTC
They should have been equal, that is how it is _meant_ to work!

Oh, i See....
So there is no real value in a draw currently then?
Ooops, and i just sent press to agree to one... well must take that back:)
Braveheart (2408 D(S))
30 Apr 08 UTC
Not in terms of points - only value is in your % draws v. survived stats.
Noirin (2827 D)

Wouldn't it be more logical if draws in ppsc games gave ppsc points too?
dangermouse (5551 D)
30 Apr 08 UTC
That's how I thought it was supposed to work too Braveheart. But it's definitely not, I got 463 points from the Duality game. I was involved in another draw recently (forget the game name) where I was a small power and got a commesurately small share of the final pot.

I'd say WTA games should definitely award a drawn pot equally. PPSC is more questionable, but I'd be in favor of equal payout there as well.

Kestas - If you're going to investigate this, PLEASE also cap payouts at 18/35th of the pot for a winner. Stop rewarding players for screwing around at the end of games and picking up 4 or 5 SD on their final turn to end at 22. I don't care if the excess pot is discarded into the ether or distrubuted in some way among the losers.
BoG75 (6816 D)
30 Apr 08 UTC
I agree with dangermouse here. The max a winner should get is 18/34 of the pot no matter what they end up with.

Also split in a draw should be even. This will encourage small powers to stop bigger power rather then getting another scrap SC from a bigger before the bigger one wins.

The way the game is designed is to have multiple smaller powers work together against the biggest power and this would encourage it.
Noirin (2827 D)
30 Apr 08 UTC
Split in a wta draw have to be even, I agree, but in a ppsc draw both options are meaningful.

One could say they should be divided equally because it is so in the wta games, and one could say they should be given ppsc as the game is a ppsc.

Just bumping this above all the crap above it.

Personally, I think a cap is a silly way of limiting a player's reward. If a player can engineer a greater and more strategically difficult win, why not be rewarded for it?!

On draws in PPSC, I agree on the three-way split. This way, is discourages the larger power from simply drawing (as it is a sacrifice) and the smaller powers have an insentive to stop the power to the point of a draw.

As soon as I have some free time I'll double-check all the points code and re-run the DATC tests
canute (0 DX)

I think if you manage to secure 19+ sc then you surely deserve the share of the points say in one gaem i got 22sc, so i should get 22/38. why should i only get a max of half if i own more than half the sc's????
freakflag (690 D)
03 May 08 UTC
Because it encourages people to not end games when they can. This is frustrating for the people who have obviously lost, yet are waiting around because they don't wanna go CD because they'll lose what few points they were going to get back from the game.

I'm with Canute. It's fair. I don't care if it's frustrating for the people who have obviously lost. Losing is supposed to be a bad thing.
menace3society (927 D)

I agree that PPSC wins should be capped: the intent of declaring the winner at 18 SCs is that someone with 18 is going to eventually win anyway; if you're going to rewards points beyond that then you might as well play until someone has all 34 SCs. If the remaining points are split equally amongst all surviving players, then you'll get a better approximation of how the scores would have gone down had the game ended when it should have.

Remember the purpose of points is not to see who has the highest total, but only to give other some idea of how good you are. Rait has way more points than anyone else, but that most just reflects what a good player he is. They can't be redeemed for cash, prizes, or power-ups.

Feckless Clod (777 D)
03 May 08 UTC
"You might as well play until someone has all 34 SCs" doesn't follow at all. That would be REALLY boring, not only for a couple of turns, but for several game years, and not only for the obvious losers, but also for the obvious winner. Winning is supposed to be a GOOD thing.

Movement help
If a French fleet from Marseilles sails to Gulf of Lyon, and an Italian fleet from Gulf of Lyon sails to Marseilles, do the bounce, or trade places?

Same question, but involving Spain.

Finally, can an army in N. Africa move to Spain SC, and can a fleet do it as well?

Thank you.

Ender's Game
I know quite a few players on this site are a big fan of this book/series and i came across this essay thew other day about the moral underpinnings of the book, thought you might like to read it.
http://www4.ncsu.edu/~tenshi/Killer_000.htm

in fact i read that book several years ago i didn't like it that much. oh yes the main character was endearing and all but i felt the book was aimed to please a teenage market bracket. not really my cup of tea, i prefer hard science fiction.
