What are all the different ranks in phpDiplomacy?
I've seen quite a few different ranks on this site both good and bad.
I was wondering how many there are, and what significance do they hold in the gameplay.

Getting lucky
It seems to me that in most of the games that I have taken part in on here that the winner has won because one of player's neighbours has pulled out of the game and left his centres free to be taken without hindrance. Would that be a fair assessment of games in general?

Terminating a game
I understand that phpDip does not support draws. But is there a way to terminate a game without declaring a winner or winners if all players agree?

The fatal flaw
I think the length of time it takes to put someone into civil disorder is the potentially fatal flaw of phpdiplomacy.

Kestas, if you could please have a look at http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=1333

It would be very sweet if you could set Gihren Zabi to cd in all his games.

Php's glitch or mine?
I've found that recently, I've had a problem with dialogue between myself and other players being unreadable because instead of the page elongating as new discussions are added in-game, they just extend behind the map and cannot be read. I was wondering if anyone else has had this difficulty, or if it is just my own computer being silly.

Convoy disruption
Pardon the (probably) irate tone of this message. In the game North by Northwest, I ordered a convoy into Denmark. I recieved the error message, "Your fleet was attacked, so couldn't convoy." Now, I own the game, and the rulebook clearly states that "An attack on a convoying fleet that does not dislodge it does not disrupt the convoy." Am I missing something here?

supporting supports
if a unit is supporting a move and itself is supported by another unit then can it not still uphold its support even if it is attacked by an unsupported enemy? My example: MAO attacks enemy unit in Portugal supported by Spain. spain is supported by Marseilles. Enemy attacks Spain with no support. GameMaster then tells me that the attempt to take over Portugal has failed because the support from Spain failed as it had to see off the attack from Gascony. But shouldn't the support from Marseilles allow it to see off this attack without losing its ability to support the attack on Portugal? Is this perhaps a fault in the software?

Ranks
How are ranks calculated? I read somewhere that it depended on the numbers of games you have won, games you have played and the games you are currently playing. But what is the exact formula? I thought it depended on the win ratio, but apparently it doesn't.

Childish behaviour
This really takes the biscuit! You have 1 unit left, no supply centres, and it's Autumn so rather than do the honorable thing and disband, you retreat and hold everyone else up an extra 24 hours without finalising.

Of course I complain about this, and the perpetrator responds with a lengthy diatribe laden with offensive language. And yet even while typing this, he still doesn't find enough time to click "finalise"... he is out of the game, he knows it, and he is deliberately keeping all the other players hanging on out of what can only be spite!

I won't be so cruel as to publically name this person, but I will say that he is one of the prime crusaders against "metagaming" - he expects to get away with behaviour like this because holding a grudge into the next game is SOOO wrong! He wants to have his cake and eat it!!

I'm scrubbed in this game, with no units, and have been for a few turns, but some areas are still coloured in my country's colour and I think that's why this game is still showing up under my profile.

'England'
I am British and it ergo pains me to see my country called 'England' in this game. England is one of the United kingdom’s three mainland member countries. Whales and Scotland are both countries (with limited sovereignty) ruled by national assemblies (Scotland by the Scottish assembly) (and whales by the welsh assembly). The foreign policy of Scotland, whales and the English law are managed from the houses of parliament in London (in England). On an international level 'England', 'Scotland', 'whales' and ‘northern Ireland' (another country in the UK, in Ireland though, not on the mainland) do not exist. The country (in pink, currently called ‘England’) on this game is not England it is the United Kingdom, I feel that the name should be changed on this game, at least to 'The UK'
Or if you are feeling pedantic; ‘The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland’ :)

Calling the UK ‘England’ is similar to calling the USA Florida.

Vash, 05:02 AM:
How about this, you help me win this game and I will do the same in a game for you but it has to be when I have finsh one of my games - You can make a game and tell me what time you are so I can join - And I will help you out even if I have to give up all of my supply points

Vash, 09:51 AM:
Nice job!

Pong, 04:15 PM:
Well I do enjoy messing with people.. but I also enjoy winning.
Wouldn't that look suspicious if we're like, pwning some games and falling over in others?

Vash, 06:43 PM:
Nope, people do it all the time, dummy accounts and friends

Error triggered: An assertion, $helpunitid, was not met as required.
I'm in the game "mid level players", and when I try to enter the game, I get this error:

"Error triggered: An assertion, $helpunitid, was not met as required..

"The details of this error have been successfully logged and will be attended to by a developer."

This has been happening all day, ever since I tried to submit my orders this morning. Will I be able to continue playing this game?

Trade-in's
How do you swap a fleet for an army during a game? I built too many fleets and now want to "trade them in" for armies. Is that possible during a game and if so how?
Thanks.

incorrect resolution of move
I had my own army destroy my own army!! what is that all about?? I was moving an army from tyrolia to venice with support from trieste and an army from vienna to tyrolia with support from bohemia. When the move finished my army which was going to venice actually disappeared from the board (before any retreat/disband orders were given) and my army from vienna was in tyrolia!! and I quote: "Autumn 1903, Diplomacy: Your army at Tyrolia was overwhelmed by an attack from the army from Vienna, and forced to retreat." Surely you can't defeat your own army??

Question about support
Here is how I understand it: a unit can be the target of a support hold order if and only if it is not moving. It can be holding or supporting and a support hold order will be valid, but if the order is to move, then it cannot be the target of a support hold. If this is the case, then why was there a stalemate when Livonia was successfully supported by Moscow into StP in this game?

Alert about playing with "mates" Gissett and noonan
I would like to alert other players about joining games with Gissett and noonan. They allied in a game I am in and they worked together even when it was not in noonan's interest and continued working together even after Gissett attacked noonan. Noonan may not be a full proxy for Gissett, but that is the impact. I have copied noonan's response to me when I challenged him about his play. You are forewarned.

"Look. i am not a proxy for anyone. i am just not bothered with this game given my mate stabbed me. i have no chance so i am more nterested in the games i can win. sorry. thats how it is"

Moving into a country without any result.
Hey, I've moved into a neutral empty Denmark successfully twice now, and it still doesn't belong to me.

My army actually stood in it for a turn.

Is this a bug?

Are we ever going to create arrows showing movement into unnocupied neutral centers?
moves like Kie-Den, Bud-Ser, and Mar-Spa don't have arrows going from the home center to the unoccupied center. is this because it makes it harder to read the names? (i'm sure everyone has noticed this already)

Please explaine this.
Got these 2 results in this game:
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=1295

1) Spring 1908, Diplomacy: Your fleet at Rumania prevented the army at Sevastopol from giving a support move against your fleet at Rumania.

2) Spring 1908, Diplomacy: Your fleet at Skagerrack disrupted the fleet at Skagerrack's convoy order.

Question 1: I thought that a unit could not cut support that was directed at it.

Question 2: What the heck does the number 2 mean?

Isn't this illegal?
"Spring 1909, Diplomacy: Your army at Warsaw prevented the army at Moscow from giving a support move against your army at Warsaw."
I thought a unit couldn't cut support of an attack against itself. Is this a bug?

yep.
markusaurelius (137 D)

I always thought that in this situation the support would be cut, but your unit cutting the support wouldn't be able to hold against the original attacking unit. I guess I was wrong.
Chrispminis (916 D)
06 Jul 07 UTC
No, you are correct, I was waiting for kestas to get back and tell us if this was a bug. It seems very much like it is.
Willigogs (603 D)

I have a similar bug, whereby the Gamesmaster gave the following results:

Autumn 1910, Diplomacy: Your army at Tyrolia was attacked by the army at Bohemia, but sucessfully defended.

YET

Autumn 1910, Diplomacy: Your army at Silesia sucessfully defeated the army and moved into Bohemia.

Therefore, how could Bohemia have attacked Tyrolia in the first place - shouldn't it have been forced to defend against Silesia (and lost)?
stormwolf (243 D)
06 Jul 07 UTC
No, that is 100% right, the Bohemia army is still able to attack. You cant stop an attack, only support moves.
dangermouse (5551 D)
06 Jul 07 UTC
Regarding the original post, sometimes the Gamemaster text is a bit misleading even when the adjudication of moves is done correctly. (ex. sometimes it claims a "stalemate" when in reality another country manages to capture a territory you are also attacking). I don't know if this is the case here, can you tell if the support was actually cut or did the gamemaster just report it incorrectly?
Willigogs (603 D)
06 Jul 07 UTC
Stormwolf - So am I wrong in believing "if a unit is being attacked it has to defend itself"?
Chrispminis (916 D)
06 Jul 07 UTC
Yup, a unit being attacked is only forced to defend itself if it is doing anything other than moving at the moment. If the unit attacked, is also attacking, the effects of it's attack are still felt, i.e. cuts off support, or conquers a territory, unless that effect would be to cut off the support of the unit that is attacking it.
Willigogs (603 D)
07 Jul 07 UTC
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight - thanks for the clarification! :)
The Mahatma (1195 D)

Can you provide the quote from the rules? I was surprised to learn that a unit can attack another territory and cut any support it is giving, even if that unit is itself being overwhelmed and forced to retreat.
The Mahatma (1195 D)
07 Jul 07 UTC
"That unit" being the unit that is cutting support even though it must retreat.
dangermouse (5551 D)
07 Jul 07 UTC
From the rulebook: "A unit being dislodged by one provice can still cut support in another. Just as a unit being dislodged by one province can still cause a standoff in another, a unit still manages to cut support even if it is dislodged."

The example given in the rules:
Germany: A Berlin holds, A Munich -> Silesia
Russia: A Prussia -> Berlin, A Silesia supp Pru->Berlin, A Boh-> Munich, A Tyr supp Boh-> Munich.
Result: "Even though the German army in Munich is dislodged by a Russian attack, it is still able to cut the support of teh Russian Army in Silesia. This prevents the Russian army in Prussia from entering Berlin"
dangermouse (5551 D)
07 Jul 07 UTC
I think the phrase of a unit being "forced to defend itself" is misleading. If a country is attacked then whatever support it may be lending is cut. No other type of action is prevented.
The Mahatma (1195 D)
07 Jul 07 UTC
Thanks dangermouse. I thought it was a php anomaly and didn't remember it from the rules.
Tinfoil (100 D)

Think of it in terms of a real armies, but in a theoretical world where EVERY order is started simultaneously. Unit A launches an attack on another (i.e some of the troops cross the border into a neighboring territory and fire upon some troops in Unit B1) while a another unit (B2) launches an attack on the territory of Unit A (initially opposed by other troops within Unit A that have yet to join their comrades into territory B1).

So the commander of Unit B1 learns that he is being attacked by A, so he sadly informs the commander of unit B3 that he will be unable to sustain effective support (i.e. keep lending troops), since he must now divert most of his troops to deal with Unit A's attack, or risk being overrun.

Meanwhile, B2's attack on A has the support of B4 (i.e the attacking troops decisively outnumber the defenders), so A cannot hold. Assuming his attack on B1 is repulsed (as it always will be if the defenders are not outnumbered), then A must retreat to some undefended place.

But B1's support was already withdrawn from B4.
Cr_Ziller (100 D)
13 Jul 07 UTC
It's the simultaneity of the moves that gets confusing in this game and dangermouse's example confuses me further!

Isn't the relevant point here the special case where an army tries to cut support from an army which is attacking it. In this case (and only this case) the support is not cut because no unit can have an effect on the territory which is dislodging it (directly or indirectly).
