What are all the different ranks in phpDiplomacy?
I've seen quite a few different ranks on this site both good and bad.
I was wondering how many there are, and what significance do they hold in the gameplay.

Getting lucky
It seems to me that in most of the games that I have taken part in on here that the winner has won because one of player's neighbours has pulled out of the game and left his centres free to be taken without hindrance. Would that be a fair assessment of games in general?

I understand that phpDip does not support draws. But is there a way to terminate a game without declaring a winner or winners if all players agree?

The fatal flaw
I think the length of time it takes to put someone into civil disorder is the potentially fatal flaw of phpdiplomacy.

Kestas, if you could please have a look at http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=1333

It would be very sweet if you could set Gihren Zabi to cd in all his games.

Php's glitch or mine?
I've found that recently, I've had a problem with dialogue between myself and other players being unreadable because instead of the page elongating as new discussions are added in-game, they just extend behind the map and cannot be read. I was wondering if anyone else has had this difficulty, or if it is just my own computer being silly.

Convoy disruption
Pardon the (probably) irate tone of this message. In the game North by Northwest, I ordered a convoy into Denmark. I recieved the error message, "Your fleet was attacked, so couldn't convoy." Now, I own the game, and the rulebook clearly states that "An attack on a convoying fleet that does not dislodge it does not disrupt the convoy." Am I missing something here?

supporting supports
if a unit is supporting a move and itself is supported by another unit then can it not still uphold its support even if it is attacked by an unsupported enemy? My example: MAO attacks enemy unit in Portugal supported by Spain. spain is supported by Marseilles. Enemy attacks Spain with no support. GameMaster then tells me that the attempt to take over Portugal has failed because the support from Spain failed as it had to see off the attack from Gascony. But shouldn't the support from Marseilles allow it to see off this attack without losing its ability to support the attack on Portugal? Is this perhaps a fault in the software?

Ranks
How are ranks calculated? I read somewhere that it depended on the numbers of games you have won, games you have played and the games you are currently playing. But what is the exact formula? I thought it depended on the win ratio, but apparently it doesn't.

Childish behaviour
This really takes the biscuit! You have 1 unit left, no supply centres, and it's Autumn so rather than do the honorable thing and disband, you retreat and hold everyone else up an extra 24 hours without finalising.

Of course I complain about this, and the perpetrator responds with a lengthy diatribe laden with offensive language. And yet even while typing this, he still doesn't find enough time to click "finalise"... he is out of the game, he knows it, and he is deliberately keeping all the other players hanging on out of what can only be spite!

I won't be so cruel as to publically name this person, but I will say that he is one of the prime crusaders against "metagaming" - he expects to get away with behaviour like this because holding a grudge into the next game is SOOO wrong! He wants to have his cake and eat it!!

I know it's really annoying, but there is nothing you can do (apart avoiding him if you don't like his way of playing), and writing it here won't help you.

If you find him offensive avoid him and ignore him, whoever he is ;)

Another 6 hours and he won't be a problem any more (while we could all have been 2 days further forward in this game if he had never been born!!).

But he seems to have this knack of popping up in games I join first... I think he might be stalking me!
Chrispminis (916 D)

Well, I'll take all the cruelty off this one... I am the accused...

So allow me to tell my side of the story. I am very disappointed that ONCE AGAIN, Noodlebug, you have taken our conflict to the public forum. I re-iterate that I have never had any problems with any other players on this site, and it seems you are the only one who is consistently corrosive.

The game in question is titled "For Fun" and was a game in which ALL players fell into civil disorder. As you may recall, fastspawn, drew attention to this game by lamenting of his poor luck when he drew a doom Russia in a game where he thought he would have a free win. I immediately jumped at this oppurtunity, knowing that others would as well. I unfortunately drew a doomed Italy as well, but played as well as I could against the overwhelmingly dominant Turkey, Noodlebug.

As some of you may know, I, as a habit, do not finalize my orders. Noodlebug knows this, and has admitted that I have respectable reasons for doing so. I was quite absent-minded that day, and I retreated in Autumn despite that I would have to disband during the unit building phase anyways, because as a habit I retreat, and as a habit I do not finalize. I was later contacted with a message from Noodlebug requesting me to not retreat but to disband and finalize in order to save time. Unfortunately, I was not on the site when he sent me the message, nor was I until the next day. When I returned to the game, I found that Noodlebug had written me a very personal accusation that I had selfishly and spitefully intentionally held up the game, and that I was a hypocrite, who's purpose was to deliberately annoy other players... I found this very upsetting, in that it was an incredible overreaction to the fact that I forgot to finalize, and that it was a personal attack, and not a neutral notification. I responded promptly and harshly, after which I DID finalize.

The next point of conflict lies in that, he claims I did NOT finalize after I wrote my response, while I am sure that I did.

I would like to point out that Noodlebug is incredibly selfish when he insinuates that I actually take time out of my life to not only stalk him in his games, but to intentionally not finalize JUST to annoy him... I find this completely irrational, yet he insists that I actually have a grudge against HIM.

Let me start out by saying, I have no reason to have any grudge against him. We have argued in past games, but it has always been because I have stabbed him, and he felt that it was stupid for me to have done such a thing, while I feel otherwise. He did not stab me, why would I hold any sort of grudge. All he did was make sure that if I ever wanted to stab him in the future, I would have to be damn prepared to deal with his whiny absolutist arguments.

To even suggest that I would intentionally, and "maliciously" hold up the game is a preposterous accusation, and a serious overreaction at best. I would like to also point out at this point that neither of the other players confronted me about my apparent incredibly dishonorable actions.

In every one of our games, he immediately questions my actions with a strong personal attack. In our first games together, I reprimanded him for immediately moving to personal attacks, and attempted to bring him back to the realm of debate and rationality. He instead, pulled me into his world of opinionated "uh huh" vs. "nuh huh". I don't see how he expected anything less than an "offensive" personal rebuke, when he consistently initiates and engages in personal attacks. I have spoken in other players in our games together, and one of they very reasons that they even agreed to orchestrate with me was because they disliked his attitude and his sore loser-ish personal attacks. Never have I initiated a cycle of personal attacks, never.

Sorry for writing such a long message, but I do not take unwarranted personal attacks lightly. Noodlebug, don't worry about the stalking or having to avoid or ignore me, because I assure you, I will meet you halfway. I hope that in the future, you do not take any of our conflicts to the public forum, because THAT really is childish.

Well, I have to agree to one thing, it's absolutely childish to take your personal conflicts up on the forum.
And not to mention the fact that this win is just like taking candy from a baby. :) I'd be at least a little ashamed of this game and I wouldn't want to draw any attention to it... 17 units to 8 + 8... where's the hurry anyway? :))
Noodlebug (1812 D)
19 Jul 07 UTC
Well I'm not the one naming names and games! No-one likes to be kept hanging on, it's worse still when it's unnecessary, and it's even worse still again when it's unnecessary AND you've actually pointed this out beforehand and suggested dispensing with any delay. And so close to victory..! Wouldn't you be frustrated with this?
opripom (2853 D)
19 Jul 07 UTC
Frustrated? Maybe, although I'm really patient in most situations and, like Chris, I prefer to be the last clicking the finalize button after I get answers from all the players I've contacted.
But, under no circumstances will I take matters like this out in the open. And I've been sworn at in one of my games. :)
TheDevil (1830 D)
19 Jul 07 UTC
Well I just want to say that Noodlebug is a quite confusing guy... He had so hurries in the game For Fun and now he has no hurries anymore... He could had win the game last Autumn, but he waits next Autumn to win, just to take more territories, making me and France "suffering" a little more.. I think that is a annoying attitude from a guy that might be confused with some things.. and YES, turn public the private conversations is very childish...
Noodlebug (1812 D)
19 Jul 07 UTC
There's a difference between "hurrying" and "not hanging around wasting time for 2 days without any good reason at all." I don't wish to hurry, I wish to go at a normal, reasonable pace. It is one thing for the winner to take a little time to savour his victory, that is the winner's prerogative - I think it is totally different for someone who has been knocked out of the game to hold everyone else to ransom. Am I the only one who sees this?
fastspawn (1625 D)
19 Jul 07 UTC
Yes indeed you are, what makes the winner have a right to "savour" his victory, and the loser not have the right to "delay" his imminent defeat.

Rationally they lead to exactly the same outcome, except that at least there is a satisfaction of knowing the loser is going to go away.

The Mahatma: at first, so did i. i thought it was some new player/sore loser, not Chrispminis.
Noodlebug (1812 D)
19 Jul 07 UTC
Well I still maintain that if you're going out of the game, it doesn't cost you anything, it saves everyone some time, and you've been asked in a reasonable manner if it can be avoided, it is a childish and churlish (even spiteful) to insist on the full time being played out on your remaining phases when everyone else has finalised in good time.

It's not against the rules, by any means, it's just a common courtesy to your fellow players. It's a good job I wasn't going on holiday on Monday/Tuesday, for example, or that behaviour could have delayed things enough to cost me the game. Which would have been a "result" of sorts for the loser, I guess.

I'm sorry no-one else on this site agrees with my point of view, but I really don't think I am being at all unreasonable. I'm relaxed about it now because the game is over, but at the time, and when I started this thread, it was very frustrating. However I didn't see any need to stoop to vulgarity, obscenity or dredging up old arguments, and while posting the thread here was reactionary, I deliberately avoided naming and shaming, and I think the issue of courtesy and timewasting is a valid issue for discussion on the forums with such incidents providing a useful illustration.

Incidentally, rather than being contradictory/hypocritical my motivation for not ending the game was exactly the same as it was for requesting the quick finalise... so that I could continue playing an enjoyable game!
Chrispminis (916 D)
20 Jul 07 UTC
I have nothing more to add to this than, I don't understand how you insist that I delayed it on purpose! I am sorry for holding up your game, but I did not mean to in the slightest bit. It was a case of habit, not spite.
The Mahatma (1195 D)

I'm scrubbed in this game, with no units, and have been for a few turns, but some areas are still coloured in my country's colour and I think that's why this game is still showing up under my profile.

'England'
I am British and it ergo pains me to see my country called 'England' in this game. England is one of the United kingdom’s three mainland member countries. Whales and Scotland are both countries (with limited sovereignty) ruled by national assemblies (Scotland by the Scottish assembly) (and whales by the welsh assembly). The foreign policy of Scotland, whales and the English law are managed from the houses of parliament in London (in England). On an international level 'England', 'Scotland', 'whales' and ‘northern Ireland' (another country in the UK, in Ireland though, not on the mainland) do not exist. The country (in pink, currently called ‘England’) on this game is not England it is the United Kingdom, I feel that the name should be changed on this game, at least to 'The UK'
Or if you are feeling pedantic; ‘The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland’ :)

Calling the UK ‘England’ is similar to calling the USA Florida.

I'm in the game "mid level players", and when I try to enter the game, I get this error:

incorrect resolution of move
I had my own army destroy my own army!! what is that all about?? I was moving an army from tyrolia to venice with support from trieste and an army from vienna to tyrolia with support from bohemia. When the move finished my army which was going to venice actually disappeared from the board (before any retreat/disband orders were given) and my army from vienna was in tyrolia!! and I quote: "Autumn 1903, Diplomacy: Your army at Tyrolia was overwhelmed by an attack from the army from Vienna, and forced to retreat." Surely you can't defeat your own army??

Question about support
Here is how I understand it: a unit can be the target of a support hold order if and only if it is not moving. It can be holding or supporting and a support hold order will be valid, but if the order is to move, then it cannot be the target of a support hold. If this is the case, then why was there a stalemate when Livonia was successfully supported by Moscow into StP in this game?

Alert about playing with "mates" Gissett and noonan
I would like to alert other players about joining games with Gissett and noonan. They allied in a game I am in and they worked together even when it was not in noonan's interest and continued working together even after Gissett attacked noonan. Noonan may not be a full proxy for Gissett, but that is the impact. I have copied noonan's response to me when I challenged him about his play. You are forewarned.

"Look. i am not a proxy for anyone. i am just not bothered with this game given my mate stabbed me. i have no chance so i am more nterested in the games i can win. sorry. thats how it is"

Are we ever going to create arrows showing movement into unnocupied neutral centers?
moves like Kie-Den, Bud-Ser, and Mar-Spa don't have arrows going from the home center to the unoccupied center. is this because it makes it harder to read the names? (i'm sure everyone has noticed this already)

2) Spring 1908, Diplomacy: Your fleet at Skagerrack disrupted the fleet at Skagerrack's convoy order.
