What are all the different ranks in phpDiplomacy?
I've seen quite a few different ranks on this site both good and bad.
I was wondering how many there are, and what significance do they hold in the gameplay.

Getting lucky
It seems to me that in most of the games that I have taken part in on here that the winner has won because one of player's neighbours has pulled out of the game and left his centres free to be taken without hindrance. Would that be a fair assessment of games in general?

The fatal flaw
I think the length of time it takes to put someone into civil disorder is the potentially fatal flaw of phpdiplomacy.

Kestas, if you could please have a look at http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=1333

It would be very sweet if you could set Gihren Zabi to cd in all his games.

Php's glitch or mine?
I've found that recently, I've had a problem with dialogue between myself and other players being unreadable because instead of the page elongating as new discussions are added in-game, they just extend behind the map and cannot be read. I was wondering if anyone else has had this difficulty, or if it is just my own computer being silly.

Convoy disruption
Pardon the (probably) irate tone of this message. In the game North by Northwest, I ordered a convoy into Denmark. I recieved the error message, "Your fleet was attacked, so couldn't convoy." Now, I own the game, and the rulebook clearly states that "An attack on a convoying fleet that does not dislodge it does not disrupt the convoy." Am I missing something here?

supporting supports
if a unit is supporting a move and itself is supported by another unit then can it not still uphold its support even if it is attacked by an unsupported enemy? My example: MAO attacks enemy unit in Portugal supported by Spain. spain is supported by Marseilles. Enemy attacks Spain with no support. GameMaster then tells me that the attempt to take over Portugal has failed because the support from Spain failed as it had to see off the attack from Gascony. But shouldn't the support from Marseilles allow it to see off this attack without losing its ability to support the attack on Portugal? Is this perhaps a fault in the software?

Ranks
How are ranks calculated? I read somewhere that it depended on the numbers of games you have won, games you have played and the games you are currently playing. But what is the exact formula? I thought it depended on the win ratio, but apparently it doesn't.

Childish behaviour
This really takes the biscuit! You have 1 unit left, no supply centres, and it's Autumn so rather than do the honorable thing and disband, you retreat and hold everyone else up an extra 24 hours without finalising.

Of course I complain about this, and the perpetrator responds with a lengthy diatribe laden with offensive language. And yet even while typing this, he still doesn't find enough time to click "finalise"... he is out of the game, he knows it, and he is deliberately keeping all the other players hanging on out of what can only be spite!

I won't be so cruel as to publically name this person, but I will say that he is one of the prime crusaders against "metagaming" - he expects to get away with behaviour like this because holding a grudge into the next game is SOOO wrong! He wants to have his cake and eat it!!

I'm scrubbed in this game, with no units, and have been for a few turns, but some areas are still coloured in my country's colour and I think that's why this game is still showing up under my profile.

'England'
I am British and it ergo pains me to see my country called 'England' in this game. England is one of the United kingdom’s three mainland member countries. Whales and Scotland are both countries (with limited sovereignty) ruled by national assemblies (Scotland by the Scottish assembly) (and whales by the welsh assembly). The foreign policy of Scotland, whales and the English law are managed from the houses of parliament in London (in England). On an international level 'England', 'Scotland', 'whales' and ‘northern Ireland' (another country in the UK, in Ireland though, not on the mainland) do not exist. The country (in pink, currently called ‘England’) on this game is not England it is the United Kingdom, I feel that the name should be changed on this game, at least to 'The UK'
Or if you are feeling pedantic; ‘The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland’ :)

Calling the UK ‘England’ is similar to calling the USA Florida.

Pong, 04:23 AM:

*Lunges*

Vash,04:56 AM:
This is not an RPG site soooo yea.

Vash, 05:02 AM:
How about this, you help me win this game and I will do the same in a game for you but it has to be when I have finsh one of my games - You can make a game and tell me what time you are so I can join - And I will help you out even if I have to give up all of my supply points

Vash, 09:51 AM:
Nice job!

Pong, 04:15 PM:
Well I do enjoy messing with people.. but I also enjoy winning.
Wouldn't that look suspicious if we're like, pwning some games and falling over in others?

Vash, 06:43 PM:
Nope, people do it all the time, dummy accounts and friends

Vash (864 D)

>_> Do you really think I do that, why and I have a real problem with people not telling the truth

He only thinks that because I am winning currently.

I know some people who does do that plus, what proof do you have that I do that anyway. I had no problem with you until you said my name.

I help alot of people in games and make good deals. I tell them all, "I am not here to win just here to have fun and to help others" that trust me enough to help them out in whatever way I can. If you dont trust me then oh well, I could care less. I am here to play and have a good time when I have time off.

Other people that cheat are fags.

What is acceptable? What should I expect?
Dant818 (100 D)

Most players play fairly and there's the occasional meta-game but there are some players who use dummy accounts to make it easier to win.
Pong (236 D)
15 Jul 07 UTC
If *some* players use dummies, their numbers are doubled, tripled, even sextupled. So the persons may be rare, but these "players" aren't so uncommon, right?
Vash (864 D)
15 Jul 07 UTC
Why dont you go tell that to Rait -_- Both of us dont even use dummy accounts - We been here long enough to have our numbers 'right'
Pong (236 D)
16 Jul 07 UTC
@Vash, who is Rait? Would you mind not hijacking this thread?

The topic: how common is (what Vash described), and, is it acceptable? Like, will about 50% of games feature a proxy at some point, or 10% or 90%? Then I'm going to ask how people detect them.
Noodlebug (1812 D)
16 Jul 07 UTC
Keep an eye in the forums where troublemakers' names will crop up. You'll soon learn who to avoid and who not to trust. It is not a coincidence that many players refuse to start or join open games and only play passworded games with specially chosen people who they know they can depend on for a fair and honest game.
PolishTeaParty (389 D)

I'm quite convinced that the conversation was real. That's just not the type of chatting people make up.
Chrispminis (916 D)
16 Jul 07 UTC
Vash, what the hell are you talking about? Where does Rait come into all of this?

@Pong, he refers to Rait, who probably has the best win-loss ratio of any other player here. It's actually frustrating how good he is. =D

I have no idea how common multiple accounts are, because I simply do not come across them. I currently seem to be playing only these "Mastermind" games, and I'm fairly sure that none of them have multiple accounts, and are all individual persons. Before that, when the site was younger, I do not recall nearly as much of this cheating, and if multiple accounts were ever used, they were used poorly, because it did not stop me from winning a decent amount of games.

There are a few complaints about these sorts of things every now and then however. It is NOT acceptable at all. Meta-gaming, multiple accounts, and preset alliances are against the spirit of Diplomacy. People who engage in such underhanded techniques ruin the game experience for themselves and all other players in their game. They have no real good reason to do it either, as winning does not come with any sort of prize, all they win is a pitiful amount of ego, but apparently there are still lowlifes whose only comfort in life is that they win a few Diplomacy games, albeit through cheating.

Although, standards on meta-gaming vary from player to player. Some see it as a grander Diplomacy in the scale of things, but personally, I try to go into each new game completely openminded, and do not worry about past quarrels. Of course, it is extremely difficult, without total anonymity, to ignore players who you know are disloyal, or those who make excellent and faithful allies.
Noodlebug (1812 D)
16 Jul 07 UTC
surely you mean "to exploit those who make excellent and faithful allies..."
aoe3rules (949 D)
16 Jul 07 UTC
@Noodlebug: lol.

oh, and Rait is beating the crap out of us in MasterMinds IV. unless he hasn't already won.

i think PolishTeaParty is right. Vash was probably trying to trick whoever it was.

1. It might be useful to people like me and Vash to start a list of reliable players (an old thread I had started, idea poo-pooed).
2. How does one get into the inner circle of invitees to password games?
3. Chrisp - aren't you a bit young to be getting piss drunk?
Ryoshi (100 D)

Perhaps a counter of moves a player has missed in their profile would be in order?
Tucobenedicto (100 D)

Pong (236 D)

The data is available. What are computers for anyway?

I'd like to see a ratio of games played through vs. games abandoned.
aoe3rules (949 D)
17 Jul 07 UTC
@The Mahatma

1. well, i remember there was a good counter argument because you were a new player back then. i suppose if you become a MasterMind everyone automatically trusts you (even will6691 - at least we actually knew HOW he was cheating) but i'd trust you now.

2. again, become a MasterMind. at least that's how i did it. i actually beat Salmaneser once :) ("the pro game") most people who cheat don't stay at the website long enough to reach a high ranking.

3. last i checked i was the youngest player on the site (12, anyone else?).

@Ryoshi, Tucobenodicto: that idea was murdered a few hundred threads ago. too much work and kestas said he'd do something similar in future updates.

@Pong:
1. for rubbing it in Bill Gate's face. MAC'S RULE!!!
2. you can tell if a person is one who abandons a lot of games if you've played them many times (again, a reason not to use the "one game with one person at a time" rule) so that's not really necessary.
The Mahatma (1195 D)
17 Jul 07 UTC
1. I play one game at a time, so maybe I'll be a MM by 2008.
2. There's the rub. MM's are playing password games against each other, but I am sure there are other strong, reliable players who have not attained that status. There are also MM players out there who don't finalize their moves when they're on the ropes in a game.
3. Aha, aoe3rules, I was confused - I thought it was Chrispminis who said he was in the 6th form in that earlier thread. Not that being the 6th form should dissuade you from getting drunk off your ass.
fastspawn (1625 D)
17 Jul 07 UTC
Actually, I think the ranking system is flawed.
I look at the Mahatma's profile and compare it with aoe3rules, and realize, hey Mahatma technically has a better record than aoe3rules.
I am not trying to slight aoe3rules in anyway, but then a 3 out of 3 score sure beats 7 out of 30 or so.

I am increasingly of the opinion the ranking system should be done away with and just pure numbers (win ratio, number of games won, number of games survived)

Of course it is much easier to win 3 out of 3 rather than 35 out of 35. That is why Rait's score is simply outstanding since he has played in so many games and has won half of them. Anything about 30% is outstanding given that the average should be around 14%
Rait (10151 D(S))

Nice to hear my name, but the truth is that I can't quite get how I'm linked to the topic of metagaming & double accounts :)
Chrispminis (916 D)
19 Jul 07 UTC
Yeah, I was wondering. It seems people are trying to get a list of stronger and more reliable players.

@Mahatma
I habitually do not finalize my moves, because your last updated orders are taken when you do not finalize. I do this because it allows time for others to respond to me, and it ensures that I do not miss any phases. The so-called inner circle of masterminds is not as prestigious as you think, have no fear, I am all for new blood in our series, and don't mind if they're not even a MM yet. A good record is more indicative of skill anyways, although, expect your peachy record to drop as soon as you join said "inner circle", mind certainly took a hit, from the 50% I nourished so proudly, hahaha. All you must do really, is to express an interest in playing, and whomever creates the game typically emails the password to the players selected. And I'm only a weeee bit young to get drunk. No worries. =D

incorrect resolution of move
I had my own army destroy my own army!! what is that all about?? I was moving an army from tyrolia to venice with support from trieste and an army from vienna to tyrolia with support from bohemia. When the move finished my army which was going to venice actually disappeared from the board (before any retreat/disband orders were given) and my army from vienna was in tyrolia!! and I quote: "Autumn 1903, Diplomacy: Your army at Tyrolia was overwhelmed by an attack from the army from Vienna, and forced to retreat." Surely you can't defeat your own army??

Question about support
Here is how I understand it: a unit can be the target of a support hold order if and only if it is not moving. It can be holding or supporting and a support hold order will be valid, but if the order is to move, then it cannot be the target of a support hold. If this is the case, then why was there a stalemate when Livonia was successfully supported by Moscow into StP in this game?

Alert about playing with "mates" Gissett and noonan
I would like to alert other players about joining games with Gissett and noonan. They allied in a game I am in and they worked together even when it was not in noonan's interest and continued working together even after Gissett attacked noonan. Noonan may not be a full proxy for Gissett, but that is the impact. I have copied noonan's response to me when I challenged him about his play. You are forewarned.

"Look. i am not a proxy for anyone. i am just not bothered with this game given my mate stabbed me. i have no chance so i am more nterested in the games i can win. sorry. thats how it is"

moves like Kie-Den, Bud-Ser, and Mar-Spa don't have arrows going from the home center to the unoccupied center. is this because it makes it harder to read the names? (i'm sure everyone has noticed this already)

Got these 2 results in this game:
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=1295

1) Spring 1908, Diplomacy: Your fleet at Rumania prevented the army at Sevastopol from giving a support move against your fleet at Rumania.

2) Spring 1908, Diplomacy: Your fleet at Skagerrack disrupted the fleet at Skagerrack's convoy order.

Question 1: I thought that a unit could not cut support that was directed at it.

Question 2: What the heck does the number 2 mean?
