I'm writing a magazine feature on Diplomacy
... and other political boardgames, actually. Can anyone suggest any others? Offer any wise words about which are best, why some work better than others, etc? Any help/comments much appreciated...

What is your typical Diplomacy player?
So I was wondering, is there any major trends in what kind of people play Diplomacy?
I'm off the Assumption that the vast majority are guys, relatively Nerdy, but in a vast range of ages. I could be massively wrong but that's what I've always thought when considering the player base.
Are there any previous threads or data already collected about this sort of thing, and am I breaking any rules by inquiring :P

I had this debate with a friend. He insists my question is too abstract to be solved. I do not believe it is. What does everyone here believe? (and yes, he already showed me that validity doesn't matter to him and Wikipedia agrees with him since he used to be an admin there).

Treaty of Versailles
Discuss the implications of the treaty and it's correlation to modern foreign policy. Are it's effects still being felt today? Does this treaty still impact the past colonies (which would now be known as Ethiopia for Italy, or Indochina for the French) of the agreeing members who signed the treaty?
Keep in mind the system of Alliances and what became of the nations who created

High Quality Variant Invitational
So, I'm taking a break from taking a break from this site, and want to play a few games.

I've noticed that we have two new variant maps, which I'm sure people put a lot of time and effort into making! Alas, variant maps rarely seem to get high-quality players, but I'd like to try them and I'd like to change that.

I'm confused because Putin promotes renting over owning but doesn't support improving your apartment to make it more of a home?

"Mean that not adopting is *not* murdering dogs?"

....Yes. Not adopting is not murdering dogs. I hope that's clear as I've tried to say this three times now.

"I'm confused because Putin promotes renting over owning but doesn't support improving your apartment to make it more of a home?"

Where did you get that from what I said? I said landlords do not allow unilateral home improvements. I've never had a landlord that would allow me to install a copper sink, for example.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
05 Nov 14 UTC
There is tons you can do to improve an apartment by going to a home improvement store. Everything ag listed seemed perfectly reasonable to me.
Putin33 (111 D)
05 Nov 14 UTC
Outdoor things? What if you live in a secure building with no individualized access to the outdoors? Paint? Most leases I've seen do not allow you to just up and paint whatever the hell you want to paint. Most other things - lamps, etc, can be bought at any other store. No need to go to the home improvement stores.

Putin, just because some rental places do not allow paint or have outdoors, does not mean some places do. You currently have diarrhea of the mouth, and the medicine is silence.

abgemacht (1076 D(G))

No, I was curious about why you thought people who rented didn't go to home improvement stores. Your argument that no renter buys plants because some apartments don't have a balcony is heinously stupid.
Putin33 (111 D)
05 Nov 14 UTC
Jesus Christ, you're ridiculous and simply making up arguments I never made in order to be a dick. Home improvement stores quite obviously and self-consciously sell products to home owners for the purpose of remodeling homes and major projects, which is why they are terrified that millennials favor urban living and renting, and why their numbers are a good barometer of how well housing purchases is doing. Any item renters purchase from such places, like lamps and plants, can be purchased elsewhere. I never claimed no renter buys plants. You made it seem like all renters have good reasons to go to these places.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
05 Nov 14 UTC

No, your claim was that jokes about home improvement stores weren't relevant to people that didn't own homes. AG gave some very reasonable examples of why people who rented would go to a home improvement store. You proceeded to think of incredibly specific scenarios in which a renter may not need a particular item AG listed.
Putin33 (111 D)
05 Nov 14 UTC
Not 'incredibly specific'. Incredibly common. But sure, make it seem like renters are enthralled with Home Depot. Cool.

We aren't talking about a roofing contractor here. We're talking about stores that sell everything from hammers to washing machines. I think you'll find a fair number of those items can be useful to renters.
Putin33 (111 D)
05 Nov 14 UTC
Do you work commission for them or something?

You can buy all of that at any department store.

ILN (100 D)
05 Nov 14 UTC
What if you're a renter AND a carpenter? I'd be enthralled with home depot.
Putin33 (111 D)

I'm sure abgemacht approves of that hyperspecific example.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

You can buy shoes in a department store, too, but that doesn't mean people who aren't mountain climbers have no idea what an outdoors store is.
Putin33 (111 D)
05 Nov 14 UTC
Is this a competition to see how many straw men you can produce in one thread? Impressive thus far.

Do average shoe purchasers frequent outdoor stores to buy shoes? Because that's the impression you're giving off about renters and your beloved Home Depot, and it's a load of bs.
Putin33 (111 D)
05 Nov 14 UTC
I'm sure next you'll tell me that elderly women frequent Cabela's to buy socks.

Well something like 66% of Americans are home owners, so I would think that most people would get it, Putin.
Putin33 (111 D)
05 Nov 14 UTC
You of all people know that webdip players are not a representative sample of American society.
True. I would think that they would be disproportionately A) College aged students (who most likely lived in houses) or young to middle aged educated professionals (again, most likely to live in a house)
Putin33 (111 D)
05 Nov 14 UTC
That's a fascinating spin on the data. College aged students aren't going to be into home renovations, and many rent.
goldfinger0303 (3157 DMod)
05 Nov 14 UTC

What I meant is they most likely spent the previous 18 years of their life in a home. But yeah, they won't be into renovations.

Anyways, the purpose of this was to share a video I thought was funny but apparently like two other people did. (Also, I have rented for the past 5 years and I was still able to understand the humor, so I'm not sure what you're getting at there)
Putin33 (111 D)
05 Nov 14 UTC
It's not about not understanding it, it's that it doesn't relate to my experience as I don't go to Lowe's with my wife getting stuff for home renovation projects, and the only people I know into that stuff are home owners.

It was a fairly banal point but for whatever reason it had to be beaten to death.

@putin: "Jokes about home improvement stores not really relevant unless you actually own a home."

yeah, i totally understand you. i tried watching the big bang theory once, but i couldn't laugh since i'm not a physicist.
then i tried to watch community, but since i'm not a college student, no laughs there for me either.
even tried the office, but since i don't work in one -

it's so hard to find something funny on tv these days.

As a person who makes a living with home renovation and remodeling (Have been for 9 years, licensed and certified), I can say there are a variety of ways to improve a home with a do it yourself mentality. Almost every consultation/ estimate I give for my services is paint and trim work, which is both cheap, easy to install, and can look good anywhere.
And on the subject on whether or not your landlord will support this endeavor is as varied as anything, its just dependent on who you're dealing with.
On the subject of where to purchase your materials? That's a tough one... I would never buy materials or full boom stock goods from The Home Depot, every time I buy their products they are always sub-par. Their tools however are very high-quality. The inverse is true with Lowes, I know they probably get their lumber from the same company but Lowes I believe takes better care of their materials. Its a give and take.
