I'm writing a magazine feature on Diplomacy
... and other political boardgames, actually. Can anyone suggest any others? Offer any wise words about which are best, why some work better than others, etc? Any help/comments much appreciated...

What is your typical Diplomacy player?
So I was wondering, is there any major trends in what kind of people play Diplomacy?
I'm off the Assumption that the vast majority are guys, relatively Nerdy, but in a vast range of ages. I could be massively wrong but that's what I've always thought when considering the player base.
Are there any previous threads or data already collected about this sort of thing, and am I breaking any rules by inquiring :P

I had this debate with a friend. He insists my question is too abstract to be solved. I do not believe it is. What does everyone here believe? (and yes, he already showed me that validity doesn't matter to him and Wikipedia agrees with him since he used to be an admin there).

Treaty of Versailles
Discuss the implications of the treaty and it's correlation to modern foreign policy. Are it's effects still being felt today? Does this treaty still impact the past colonies (which would now be known as Ethiopia for Italy, or Indochina for the French) of the agreeing members who signed the treaty?
Keep in mind the system of Alliances and what became of the nations who created

In the London Marathon running for NSPCC ..... Happy days!!
The countdown starts here, first step - shed 6 stone.
Official weigh in at 136 kg, 299 lb, 21stone 5lb. It's not gonna be easy....

1% of target already ..... good start.

With regard to the weight I have done a 42lb in 42 days charity event before.
Now it's no coffee, no beer, no crisps, no chocolate, no biscuits.
I'll keep you posted as the weight falls off.....

"With regard to the weight I have done a 42lb in 42 days charity event before."

That's insane and dangerous. Charities make people do the dumbest things.

Libraries are great. Museums are great. People who work on behalf of labor, animal, or environmental causes are an unalloyed good. People who work for or promote public transportation, public health, public access to the arts, civil service, and public education are invariably good. Plenty of other things too.

But, of all the things which could provoke the "you dislike everything" response, raising questions about the wisdom of losing weight at 3x the maximum recommended pace in an era when extreme dieting has led to severe heart problems and deaths doesn't seem like the best spot.
Jamiet99uk (865 D)

My weight regularly varies by around 4-6lbs in the space of a week. However I would not advise attempting to lose weight at the rate of 1lb per day on a sustained basis. After the first stone or so, that's a dangerously fast rate. Putin is about right.

Many thanks Octavious, much appreciated. Every extra donation no matter how big or small is an incentive to push that bit harder, one more lap around the park in the rain, a few more sit ups or another 10 lengths in the pool.
I will keep people updated both on my training and my weight loss, the most important thing is don't get injured early on by trying to do too much as that will play havoc with my training regime.
Plenty of stretching, plenty of walking, plenty of water, more fruit, more fish, lots of salad and vegetables, some vitamin supplements, new trainers.
I would expect to have lost about 10lb by next Tuesday just with diet changes.

Good God, people, Nigs is big and ugly enough to look after himself. He also knows his body far better than we do. If he thinks he can reach his target by adopting a disciplined (but not particularly extreme sounding) diet, and combining it with some exercise, then I am inclined to believe him. And if it turns out he can't, he'll still be a lot better off than if he hadn't bothered. Don't worry about him accidently starving himself to death or making his heart explode because, and this is the crucial bit some of you seem to have forgotten, he's not a idiot.

Join the Tories, Nigs. Self responsibility all the way ;).

Good luck Nigee, I really want to run the London Marathon but the entries just seem too competitive to me.
Regarding your weight loss goals, it does seem a bit excessive, but I wish you the best of luck. 2 years ago I lost 15kg in a short of time.
Pro's: Feel fitter, can run further, started running 20ks at weekends, which I never envisioned myself doing a year earlier.
Con's: Buying a new wardrobe.

Good luck :)

@putin: i wasn't saying that you're a misanthropist, i don't think that you hate everything. i just find it interesting to observe people's reasons for joining a thread. i, for instance, comment if i can add something to the discussion, or sometimes when i believe that someone's argument is incredibly wrong. but you never seem to join a thread to say, "wow, what a good idea". this thread and bo's are just two examples.

Maniac - thanks for the donation. In all of the banter and excitement I'll try to remember what a great charity the NSPCC is and that I am actually doing this for a cause, every donation encourages a bit more pain, sweat and hard work to get myself ready.
First change is away from proper coffee to herbal tea .... Rosehip at the moment but could soon switch to Honey & Lemon.

Kasimax - I don't see where we differ then.

"Don't worry about him accidently starving himself to death or making his heart explode because, and this is the crucial bit some of you seem to have forgotten, he's not a idiot."

He thinks coffee has calories and he lost 42 pounds in 42 days, so I don't agree.

And people who die from extreme dieting are not "idiots". But I'll just chalk that up to your usual callous asshattery in an attempt to be cute.

Why do you get a headache when you are going through a detox?

I usually only do it for 48 hours at a time .... with 4 hours to go I've lost over 3kgs but now now realize I should have given up coffee way before starting the detox, I've had a 24 hour headache.

"In particular, the first few days of a Detox diet, headaches are a very common symptom. In fact, a large percentage of people who go on Detox diets find that they get headaches the first few days. The headaches are due in part to withdrawal from addictive elements in our diets. The first few days of a Detox diet are a rather dramatic transition for most people and they are going "cold turkey" on many items they are accustomed to eating and drinking regularly. Even though these foods in many cases aren't considered "Drugs," there is still a withdrawal effect when we aren't getting these items into our system. The headache you will likely experience is part of the withdrawal effect.

Coffee, in particular, causes a headache when we withdraw it from our diets. When we quit coffee, we get a headache. The article "Beware the perils of caffeine withdrawal" by Judy Fortin explains why caffeine withdrawal causes a headache. A doctor interviewed in the article states, "caffeine blocks receptors in the brain that can dilate blood vessels causing headaches." Drinking caffeine constricts the blood vessels that reach our brain, and reduces the amount of oxygen going to our brain. When the brain realizes less oxygen is getting to the brain, it increases adrenaline, which is what causes a sudden boost of energy.

If possible it is a good idea to quit coffee before attempting your Detox diet. Otherwise, you will potentially be suffering symptoms from the coffee withdrawal at the same time as you experience the other Detox symptoms. If possible, at least dramatically reduce your coffee consumption in the days leading up to the start of your Detox diet. Chocolate, tea and soda also can be addictive in the same way as coffee as these items also contain caffeine. Quitting caffeine products can also cause people to be irritable. If you experience irritability during your Detox diet, it also very well might be because you are not getting exposure to the products you regularly eat and drink to which you may be addicted to.

Even if you aren't addicted to coffee, you may get a headache during your Detox diet, especially during the first few days. When toxins are released they can cause muscle tightness. This tightness affects your head. Many people find that massage helps them great deal during a Detox. Also people who eat lots of dairy will have sinus related headaches during the Detox process. These people might have more mucus that needs to move out of the body.

To assist with headaches during your Detox diets are sure to drink lots of water. Water will help to flush out your system and reduce symptoms like headaches. Also a good rule of thumb is to begin eliminating foods and drinks that may be addictive days before your Detox diet begins. Instead of coffee, you might want to drink green tea in the week leading up to your Detox. Also eliminating sugar, caffeine, and alcohol in advance is a good idea."

So, I'm taking a break from taking a break from this site, and want to play a few games.

I've noticed that we have two new variant maps, which I'm sure people put a lot of time and effort into making! Alas, variant maps rarely seem to get high-quality players, but I'd like to try them and I'd like to change that.
