The SSA , can really do nothing but issue you a new card, you will need to pull your credit reports from experian and transunion, which are the two major credit unions, and monitor this yourself.......there's also a company called lifelock and for a fee they will help monitor for you...

You should also contact your bank, as well as the credit agencies.

thanks guys. I was at a retail store and helped move a microwave and asked my mother to hold my wallet. she put it down and someone took it. we found the wallet empty. My SS card and Birth Certificate were in it because i'm days away from leaving for college otherwise they'd be on file at my house.

I needed it to get my ID today which is why I had it all on me. So to answer that question yes I have an ID now.

You can get credit locks with the three credit report companies without a police report being filed. I went through this and the police wouldn't file an identity theft report. A video store *cough* Blockbuster *cough* wouldn't make a misdemeanor theft complaint so the police ignored my felony complaint. I was told by the county attorney's office I would need to hire a lawyer and sue the police in court to do their job.

A few years later my mother's identity was stolen by an employee with that police department. This time I tried to get a lawyer because it was part of an insurance fraud and no one wanted the case.

Good luck. At least you don't have to go and get replacement credit cards and close out accounts.

No it isn't. The Wiki article only talks about notifying the police if your identity has been used illegally / fraudulently. It actually doesn't mention reporting the initial ID theft. That's why I mentioned it.

Perhaps I'm being insensitive, but I call bullshit. This is nothing more than CB fishing for attention.

To fit his Birth Certificate in to his wallet, CB would have to fold it up in to a little square. I doubt anyone would do such a thing, particularly if they were taking it out of a file. Also, thieves don't take money from wallets and then leave them around so their theft can be confirmed, they throw them in the trash so that the confusion at the scene lasts as long as possible. Lastly, did this retail store not have video cameras? If it was a chain it most certainly does. That a GM wouldn't check the tapes (at least) or call the police to report the theft seems fishy to me.

@ Randomizer: You didn't need Blockbuster's permission to call the police if a crime had been committed. That being said, they would only file a report of theft, as that was the crime that took place. Stealing a wallet doesn't rate as identity theft...although it sure can lead to it.

You could fit a birth certificate in there, folded just once, I think. Plus it would explain why he needed to put the wallet down to do anything else.

Secondly, it's actually quite common, I think, for a thief to take the cash and cards from a wallet, but then leave the wallet where they found it, or put it back - if they have the opportunity, and especially if they were wearing gloves so haven't left prints. Leaving the wallet in the original place (or returning it un-noticed) means there's a good chance the victim won't realise straight away that the contents of the wallet have been taken - giving the thief more time to get away.

@ trip People like you piss me off. I asked for help got my help and stopped commenting. If I wanted attention I would have stayed on here milking it all day. I simply came on to ask for help because I assumed that this site has people who would know what to do and at 9pm when I couldn't call the PD or SSA this was the best option for information. Now I've been in contact with the PD, and haven't been on. I think it's ignorant bullshit like you that drives people away. This is a community, a resource, so I used it as such. Got a problem with it take it up with Someone else because I am not in the mood.

No the office hours aren't after 8pm so police reports on stolen items and non emergencies are to be handled the next day. This being a stolen item and a non-emergency I waited. I went there today got my event number for the credit agencies (as was suggested here) and I have to wait for Monday to call SSA because their calling hours are 7-7 on weekdays. But to let everyone know It's coming along the store checked cameras but no camera angles were available for the area I was in. (I personally think that's a crock of bullshit) , I'm going to get my birth certificate tomorrow and my SS card on Tuesday.

Thanks Ssorenn I just am still a little agitated so maybe it's showing in my reaction. Normally I'd laugh it off but I am just so ....... What good did come of this was that I get a new card and birth certificate mine were shot my dad kept it in his wallet for 18 years and it was tattered bad. So I guess it's a freshish start lol.

Byron, do you have credit cards? If so, contact them immediately. Also if you have a bank account in your name, or a cellphone account in your name.

Plan for a long hassle though, but hopefully not an intense one. The second time my ID was stolen, I only found out because a local jewelry store salesperson sent me a thank-you note for buying the $5000 watch and hoping I had a good fishing trip. After a protracted hassle with stores that would *not* stop accepting checks with my name on them, multiple times, and with a local sheriff department that was so backed up they didn't share with the city police for months, by which time the surveillance video had been accidentally wiped, they finally caught the stolen identity ring in LA and we were notified because they had faked checks with my name on them.

Considering you caught it immediately, and assuming the PD and the SSA are doing their jobs, I wouldn't expect anything that drastic.

I dont want you to be frustrated, but depending on where you live, dont be to hopeful that the PD will do anything, but acknowledge that you made a complaint.....the money is gone and the papers can be replaced....it will be up to you to be proactive about your credit

Yea the PD isn't my hometown so idk. I hope they are proactive but who knows. It just sucks everything is closed on a Sunday so I have to do everything today.
