FINALLY HOLIDAY!!
Well, I gave it all daily these last 4 weeks causing me to have a 9.2 now, and the holiday is only a week, but I've never been so happy with a holiday. Now if you'll excuse me I'll go sleep for 21 hours now, too bad I have a party then...

COTY
After all the fun lately, maybe we should start quoting the best comments of the year?
Also, before everyone does it, are you allowed to quote yourself or does someone else have to nominate your comment?

Getting around an active silence?
It wasnt a new profile, so that can't be it. Who cares to speculate? I'm going for a php injection as scenario.
probably using chrome's incognito mode tbh
Huh? How does incognito mode allow that?

I do think I know how he did it though, and it's deadly simple. Don't think it's a good idea to say it though.

Sure it is. They'll fix it in a jiffy. Besides, blankflag already knows how anyway, so you'd only be informing the *other* silenced lurkers - of which I'm sure there are few.
"SYnapse Online

Please can you post in the active silence thread a message from me.

I have good reason to believe the Admins are unsilencing blankflag, allowing him to post in order to justify a ban.

I will update the webdip community more when my silence expires."
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
17 Oct 13 UTC
So, the guy who created and maintained his own website, but in the opinion of SYnapse, lacks the "knowledge or capacity" to send an email, does have the "knowledge and capacity" to somehow hack the webdip website. Fascinating.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
17 Oct 13 UTC
My initial guess, btw, was that SYnapse or some other joker had created a fake blankflag account using a capital 'i' in place of one or both of the l's in bLankfLag's name, but it doesn't seem to be that.

@ President Eden: For the record, it certainly can't be done using Chrome's "incognito" mode. Here's what Google's own help pages say about incognito:

"Browsing in incognito mode only keeps Google Chrome from storing information about the websites you've visited. The websites you visit may still have records of your visit. Any files saved to your computer or mobile devices will still remain.
For example, if you sign into your Google Account on http://www.google.com while in incognito mode, your subsequent web searches are recorded in your Google Web History."

Incognito doesn't hide your identity from the websites you are *visiting*, it hides the visited sites from your *own* browsing history. It's not a hacking tool, it's more of a tool to help unhappily married men look at porn without their wives knowing.

So basically SYnapse is circumventing his silence too. Great.

Is it against the rules to ask other users to post on your behalf, while you are silenced?
captainmeme (1723 DMod)
17 Oct 13 UTC
Asking people to post on your behalf is fine. Blankflag posted himself, after he had been warned that he would be banned if he did so again.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
17 Oct 13 UTC
How did he post? Why wasn't he silenced?
captainmeme (1723 DMod)

We're looking into it.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
17 Oct 13 UTC
I think it's a technique known as "hacking", bo_sox
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
17 Oct 13 UTC
There are much easier ways to circumvent a silence than hacking the site.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
17 Oct 13 UTC
It's not hacking, basically what he did was saved a copy of the site open in a tab from before he was silenced. He then went through the code changes between that and the new tabs he opened and made changes to the webcode his browser was running (there are a ton of ad ons that do this). I'll shoot Kestas the fix later today since it's an easy one.

You just need to check the "silenced" flag upon submission of a post to the forum and reject it at the server if the person is supposed to be silenced. Right now, the site only silences by hiding the posting div in JavaScript.
User-sided silencing, ouch. I figured silencing was hard-coded in the sql.

"Sure it is. They'll fix it in a jiffy. Besides, blankflag already knows how anyway, so you'd only be informing the *other* silenced lurkers - of which I'm sure there are few."

What I was thinking of can't be fixed in a jiffy, it requires changes I do not wish to see. Furthermore, as long as those changes don't happen many more people would go nuts since they know they can just circumvent their silence. blankflag walked another path though.

My idea does cost money though, and the mods can change things back to normal.

"basically what he did was saved a copy of the site open in a tab from before he was silenced. He then went through the code changes ..."

So....does this mean if I ever get a case of a guilty conscience, I can change my local code and silence myself? lol

Nahhh....never gonna happen...you guys would miss me way to much...
steephie22 (182 D(S))

No krellin, you might be able to do that now but very soon you won't be able to do so.

So if you can circumvent a silence can I make myself appear as someone else?
Draugnar (0 DX)

I think you would need their password to fake that one as the code stores the post based on the registered user ID for the session and you need the password to register the ID.

Confused about support holds
I'm France in a gunboat game GB36WTA.
http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=126952

Last turn, England support held my fleet in North Sea from 2 locations, Ed and Lon. My fleet in North Sea tried to move to Holland and was blocked. T hen my fleet in Nsea was dislodged by Nor with support from Den. Why didn't my fleet, plus 2 support holds, prevent the attack from Norway? What am I missing?

2013 Pissing Troll Awards... You Know Who You Are!
The Forum is quite free and open, given this is a DIPLOMACY site, not religious or political. I came here for Diplomacy, but have joined some unrelated and interesting discussions. However, with the govt shutdown, the Pissing Trolls have come out in force -- crazy, insulting and clogging the boards -- they need to be named.

Does anyone else do this, start playing a game, and then think, you know what I'll help my neighbour win? Why would you do this, there was ample opportunity to stab?
This is an anonymous gunboat btw and these players don't know each other.
I suppose this is one of the dangers of playing non-WTA, people play for points even if it means they lose the game.
