NFL Week 5: Pick 'em--Wherein, Hey, There Are Actually a Lot of Good/Interesting Games!
So we kick off the week tonight with a game which looked like crap at the beginning of the year and now...looks slightly less like crap with the Bills and Browns going at it. Seattle meets Indy, the Niners and Texans square off on Sunday Night, the Raiders and Chargers play a LATER Sunday Night game no one outside California will watch, Pats/Bengals, Lions/Packers, and so on...so, once again, we ask you to...PICK 'EM!

Openings for a learning game
I enjoyed both the School of War and Dojo of War experiences this summer. Doing both at the same time was idiocy on my part, and I still owe an EoG for Dojo. However, the amount of learning was good, and humbling. I am proposing another learning game.

Best way to make more money out of money?
So there's a bunch of money I'm not planning to spend for at least 2 years. Can I best keep it on a bank account as usual or are there more lucrative options that have about the same risk level as a bank account (practically none, since in this case the government returns the money if the bank goes boom)?

When is it OK to start watching basketball again?
I stopped watching basketball altogether after the LeBron James "Decision" and strike-shortened season turned the NBA into a soap opera telenovela. Is the nonsense over yet? Are people playing basketball again? Like they mean business? Is there a new Bill Laimbeer out there fouling out and taking a bow before a booing crowd?

Interesting Poll
What would happen if during an election between two candidates for a political office a poll was held, where instead of preference for either candidate, people could "mix" the candidates, assigning percentages to each..? That should yield interesting and data on your electorate distribution..

reputation
i think you can get along fine until you pass a certain threshold of douchebaggery, then you get a reputation, and a flood of stories get brought up in everyday gossip and your cause is lost.

so does anybody have strategies for maximizing douchebaggery without losing reputation? i think the only hope is to conform. if you are a nonconformist, then any small thing will seem big because people will constantly hear of it because you are often talked about.

Gov Shutdown? 83% Disagree...
http://washingtonexaminer.com/wheres-sense-of-crisis-in-a-17-percent-government-shutdown/article/2536862

That's right, 83% of Federal Spending is still flowing. Time to take the 17% that is "non-essential" and give it to the states where it belongs, or let private industry perform the same functions.

Give 1 pop culture thing you liked 10 years ago you now like less/dislike, and then 1 pop culture thing you disliked/liked less 10 years ago that you now like.
Give 1 religious/political thought/stance you agreed with 10 years ago that you now disagree with, and 1 religious/political thought/stance you disagreed with that you now agree with.
And to cap it off--1 book that's risen in your estimation over the last 10 years, and 1 that's fallen.

Pop Culture:

10 Years ago I (clearly) liked Star Wars...now I'm pretty indifferent to it, haven't seen those movies in years...

And 10 years ago my grandparents LOVED Frank Sinatra and I thought it was just old and dated...now my grandmother still loves Frank (my grandfather's gone, sadly) and I love Sinatra and Dean Martin as well (and we'll throw in Sammy Davis Jr. just for the Jewish points. But yeah, awesome music, love listening to that...I'd rather go to a bar with THAT being played live than a night club with today's music blasting so loud it goes through me.) :)

Well, 10 years ago I was pretty much the same as my dad (as I guess a lot of kids are) so I believed in God and was a Republican (or as much a "Republican" as one can before even being old enough to drive, lol) and now I think we can all see that's done a total 180-degree flip, so yeah... :p

And then books...hm...

I probably first read Treasure Island and a collection of Robin Hood adventures 10 years ago, and while I don't hate either and both are still on my bookcase, neither really call to me the way they used to (especially Treasure Island)...

On the other hand, about 10 years ago is right around the time I started reading Sherlock Holmes, and before that it just seemed silly...and now I have the complete Sherlock Holmes in 2 paperback volumes and 11 Jeremy Brett episode adaptations of it on DVD, not to mention a novelty pipe and "221B" written on my calendar, so yeah...Long Live Holmes, Watson, Mrs. Hudson and 221B Baker Street. :)

Pop culture: I disliked the daily show 10 years ago because it was so anti bush, now I never miss an episode.

I can't think of something I liked 10 years ago that I dislike now. I guess I could name a few bands that I got sick of ... Likin park and disturbed.

Politically, I used to think global warming was a real thing, then I grew up.

I used to think gay marriage would undermine the definition of traditional marriage, then I grew up.

books: I never used to read fiction of any sort. It was all science, history, business, software and biographies. Now I pretty much only read fiction. I realized that I didn't have to always be learning, it was ok to be entertained.

I'll try and play along.

One thing I've quit doing is playing video games. Ten years ago I would still play games on the Wii, or on the computer. But now I rarely do. I'd rather play a board game or card game.

I was also a bigger fan of popular fiction, things like Ludlum, Clancy, Cornwell, etc. Now I find I would rather read more demanding classic fiction, or non-fiction.

The biggest thing would be that 10 years ago I was a devout, card-carrying Mormon, while now I have a severe antipathy to the LDS Church. I'd never had a sip of alcohol, and now I'm a fan of beer, wine, and spirits.

Oh God...I'm probably walking into a trap here...

But then, when am I NOT walking into trouble! Full steam ahead!

http://news.yahoo.com/temperatures-rise-0-3-4-8-c-century-082532408.html

That and the fact the scientific community's repeatedly said global warming IS "a real thing"...

What's your response, Mr. philcore--why don't you think it's a real thing/ a thing but not that big a deal/a natural cycle that we're not significantly impacting (jumping the gun, as those are the two most cited arguments I've heard as to why global warming isn't a thing.)

And hm, I agree on the video game count, dipplayer...

I used to play video games all the time (ah for the days of my meticulously-created All-Time Teams on MLB 08: The Show and Madden...how I still remember my All-Time Mets eing mired in 4th place in the NL East--so like real life!--as the rotation of Spahn/Maddux/Glavine/Smoltz/Burdette and hitting of Hank Aaron/Chipper Jones/Eddie Matthews on the Braves was nearly unstoppable...and the Yankees' lineup of Berra/Gehrig/Martin/Jeter/Rizzuto/DiMaggio/Mantle/Ruth was in a killer race against Cal Ripken/Brooks Robinson/Frank Robinson/Satchel Paige/Jim Palmer and the Browns/Orioles combined squad...

And THEN there was the Madden All-Time League, wherein the All-Time Niners trounced the All-Time Lions and the All-Time Giants were undone by a last-second pass from Fran Tarkenton to Cris Carter as the All-Time Vikings pulled off a shocker, but both would lose to the eventual All-Time NFC Champion Packers...while the All-Time Raiders CRUSHED Brady and the All-Time Patriots only to be undone by a last-second Fouts-to-Winslow TD as the All-Time Chargers moved on, only to them see THEM crushed by the unstoppable duo of Franco Harris and Jerome Bettis out of the backfield and Lynn Swann, John Stallworth and Hines Ward catching bombs from Roethlisberger--Terry Bradshaw being injured and out for the season, how sad and yet fun I remember that, lol--and the All-Time Steelers...

And it was close, 21-14, but the All-Time Packers beat the All-Time Steelers in the Dynasty Bowl and are hereby the best franchise all-time...so rejoice, Packer fans. :p Ah, good times, good times...)

But now I hardly ever play any video games...we moved stuff around and I got the N64 working again for the first time in years (working or no I'll never throw it out, I got that after I left the hospital after my stroke, I remember trying extra hard on my physical therapy because I wanted to be able to hold the controller and play, so I'll never give that thing up, too many memories) but yeah...aside from a quick time-killing NES ROM on my computer, I don't play video games much anymore, either.

Though if I ever have a weekend to kill and nothing else to do, I wouldn't mind rematching those All-Time Madden Teams again...and the All-Time Mets have been stuck in 4th place limbo for, oh, 2-3 years now or so...kind of like the real Mets, but still.)

OK. On pop culture.... well, does Fox News count? They're kind of entertainment, right? And I've gone off them. But in case not, let's see... I guess I considered Dead Poets' Society a much greater movie then than I do now. On the other hand, ten years ago I didn't like the Simpsons, and now I love them. (Early seasons only, though).

On your religious/political one -- it's hard not to notice that these are both the same question. ;-) But that's OK, I'll give you two. On religion (or kind of philosophy), ten years ago I would have been a committed Cartesian dualist; now, while I haven't altogether discarded it, I consider it less convincing than substantially more nuanced views. And on politics, I think my biggest mistake ten years ago was discounting others' fears of overgrown executive power.

For a book that's risen in my estimation, I'd like to answer "Of Human Bondage" -- right after reading it, I disliked it a decent amount. While I've never reread it, I now consider it one of the greatest books I've ever read. I guess I'll go ahead and answer that. While that process started a little more than 10 years ago, it's continued, and it's easily the main example of my appreciating a book more later. For the reverse, I don't value "Essay Concerning Human Understanding" now as much as I did then.
Pop culture:

I have to go farther back than ten years, but The Clash. I hated them in the eighties, but absolutely love them now.

Jethro Tull was one of my favorites and I'm not that keen on them anymore.

Religious views:

Religious viewpoint: I've gone from pro-choice to pro-life. (politically though I'm pro-choice still).

Major political viewpoint change in the last ten years would be capital punishment. I was an ardent supporter, but have done a one eighty.

"Give 1 pop culture thing you liked 10 years ago you now like less/dislike, and then 1 pop culture thing you disliked/liked less 10 years ago that you now like."

Like More: Music in general, but especially swing/blues & indie rock. I listen to the radio a lot more than I ever did and own a few more records. The same goes for art & plays.

Like Less: Movies in general. The quality of movies has just gone downhill, IMO. No original screenplays, and comedies are just awful. My opinion of organized sports (minus soccer) has also declined, although that's a very recent thing.

Religion/Politics: I used to believe that electoral politics was pointless, a 'bourgeois sham', and that the parties were the same. Then I grew up, to borrow a phrase.

I also prioritize environmental & animal rights issues much more than I ever did. I used to have a low opinion of vegans, now I respect them a great deal.

Book that has risen in my estimation: Carl Schmitt's "The Concept of the Political". I honestly didn't understand it the first time I read it, but now I can see why people think it is insightful. Ditto Hobbes's "Leviathan", which I didn't pay much attention to as an undergrad, I now think the book is a masterpiece. I'm beginning to appreciate Kant also, after reading some of his easier stuff.

Books that have fallen in my estimation: Well, I sold my collection of Chomsky books, which all read alike anyway.

Give 1 religious/political thought/stance you agreed with 10 years ago that you now disagree with, and 1 religious/political thought/stance you disagreed with that you now agree with.

After reinventing myself last summer (in which I also forfeited on playing diplomacy) I like the exact same book genre and more-or-less the same music genre (more trance, hip hop and indie (I guess one of the very few with that combination)), though the nationalistic folklore songs have gone.
Furthermore, I'm no longer a supporter of populism and gradually shifting to from conservatism to a 'green' liberal, after having seen that (fiscal, but especially social) conservatism by itself doesn't work and is unsustainable due to incompetent politicians.

I don't know all that much about American history (self evident some might say), but I found this piece in the New York Review of Books challanged some of my preconceptions.
