While I don't in any way believe that the 9/11 attacks were plotted by the government (or anything other than the government's presented explanation), there is some relatively enticing testimony to suggest that it may have been, certainly more than most terror events around the world. Obviously none of it is very convincing or realistic, though.

Nonono. The US is not allowed to spy on its citizens. Canada is not allowed to spy on its citizens. So Canada spies on US citizens. US spies on Canadian citizens. A deal is easily made. If you don't worry about *your* government spying on you, you might worry about the others.

Oh and btw, did you think the spying was aimed to curb terrorism? Wrong again. Xkeystroke was primed to http, specifically because that's what 'the average internet user' uses. So either the terrorist we are looking for are idiots who use http, or law-enforcement is stupid for thinking it can find terrorists by monitoring regular Joes and Janes. Take your pick.

A Northern-Irish author once said that finding terrorists is like finding a needle in a haystack. She mentioned the most common mistake in law-enforcement was the tendency to add more hay to the haystack. Here's a case if I ever saw one.

I think the problem most people (or at least most thinking people) have is not just the fact that the government can monitor internet use. It's that the legal protections in place are lacking to prevent the abuse of that ability to monitor. Right now, only policy, not law, is standing in the way of the transformation of our society into a dystrophy police state. That might be good enough as long as we have basically decent people as our leaders, but the day that changes we'll be powerless to stop abuse.
