Why I don't use the forums...
I've pretty much just given up on reading or posting anything slightly political or religious on this forum because from what I've seen, most of the political/religious forum posts are 80% stupid liberal word games, 15% slightly less stupid conservative arguments, (thank you krellin) and maybe 5% are posts that I look at and think wow that's a really good point... I don't mind having my views argued against, but most of the time, the posts aren't even worth the time...

The Forum is on Break or Something
Is it just me, or has there been a high lack of posts going on lately? It seems like since summer started, there's been a lot less crazy shit thrown around on the forums, which bothers me, because that's the whole reason why people ever physically use the internet. Would you all mind stepping it up? I feel like I've been getting a lot of attention too, which is also unusual...

Optional Auto Reminder System?
"The end of the next phase is coming up soon!"

Wouldn't that be a useful email to receive (by optionally consenting somewhere) for the minimization of frustration of those who have things slip their minds plus all of those other players in games with those who have things slip their minds? I am sure this topic must have come up somewhere sometime before. But, whatevers, let's bring it up again! Thoughts?

Just to give krellin something else to chew on...

Why isn't this place closed? Nothing good is coming out of it. Whether or not the prisoners are given due process, they are making a national mockery out of a prison. There's too many black marks to keep it open. I just don't get it.

Making up names for a book
Any advice on this? Suggestions? I suppose it should be very easy but I can't decide which name to choose every time...

If someone is willing to just list some good names (note the book is Dutch so some might not be appropriate but I don't mind if you don't speak Dutch and give it a shot anyway. In fact I appreciate it.) I can probably just use those. I need surnames as well.

The Difference(s) Between the English and Americans--According to Stephen Fry
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRzU8q4M8sQ I personally thinks he hits the nail on the head to a large extent (though there is certainly some irony in the nation with an intentionally-secular Constitution being more religious and faith-based while the on with a State Church has a greater tradition of skepticism and empiricism) and it's true...the 50 ARE so different I'd argue your average Los Angelino and Londoner have more in common ideologically than a California and Alabamian--thoughts?

Big Brother 15
Does anybody on these forums watch the reality TV show "Big Brother"? I am looking for people to share in my obsession with my show, seeing as I have very few people that I actually know that like to watch this show.
I also am keeping up with American Ninja Warrior, so if anybody watches that I am cool with discussing that as well :)
Maybe any other TV shows people watch as well? I am interested, but mostly focused on finding people who watch Big Brother.

Cancel After 1902 should equal bullseye on your back
Players who vote "Cancel" when a reasonable "Draw" is available should be attacked, even at great risk to your own interests. This business of eschewing the Draw to preserve one's "GR" should be met with counter-strategy.

And it's cheating in gunboat, but for some reason this rule is not being enforced. I don't think I'll be joining any more gunboats until there's a software solution. (I know, email the mods. I did over a week ago.)

"Using the Pause or Cancel buttons as signals to other players is violating the press rules. For example, voting pause to signal the desire for a smaller draw is not allowed. If you need a pause in a gunboat game contact the moderators (see below for the contact details) and explain why. "

Please send future instances of this to [email protected]

@gavrilop, there will not be a software solution, but if people follow procedure and email us the problem will be reduced and eventually eliminated. Not all cases are solved in a week.

Oh, apologies, I wasn't suggesting it was being used as a signal, but I just find it annoying when all players but one show "draw" and one shows "cancel."

Well said Yawni, you are so right. It might be on a Diplomacy website, have the same countries, the same maps, the same rules of play, the same time frames, all these things are done to fool the weak and poor and stupid into thinking it actually is Diplomacy but it is not.
Let me guess what is Diplomacy Yawn-Yawn, what you prefer to play, am I right?
Why don't you tell us all about yourself, I bet it would be fascinating (yawn, yawn)

Here's an idea, when a game starts with a CD or multiple CDs......gasp....cancel it.

Then start over. lol
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
10 Jul 13 UTC
But Gen. Lee, that's just too hard for some feeble minds.
I totally think you should cancel it if the game ends after a few turns because of a CD, and it's not just about GR's or whatever, but it's because the game can't be played - it hasn't been played to a draw. The only reason everyone else wants to draw is because they are desperate to get a cheap point off the CD, and that isn't something to promote at all!

I said "Cancel After 1902" - I'm all in favor of cancelling at the start if there are *any* CDs (and I *always* vote cancel if anyone misses the start of the game.) What I'm saying is if I've had to be in a game until 1902 because other players won't cancel, then I've invested time in the game and I'll take the points for my trouble. Players sweating their Ghost "Ranking" make it a worse waste of time! I don't care about GR, attack, attack, attack!
SunRa (1049 D)
10 Jul 13 UTC
Oh thanks for link.
Thats à nice thing elo based rankings been talked about in f2f as long as i been around (93)
but let's have a situation where in 1903 the biggest power is banned or CDs, isn't it sensible EVEN THEN to cancel the game? I don't think a ban or a CD necessarily means a cancel, but I do think if it really changes the shape of the game a cancel is a fair option, just because you still haven't played the game to a draw and can't truly play it out. You should, I suppose, be able to draw it if everyone there decides they want the points for their trouble, but I still think an insistence on cancelling is fair enough....

"The only reason everyone else wants to draw is because they are desperate to get a cheap point off the CD, and that isn't something to promote at all! "

No it isn't you dick, I want to DRAW so I can find out what twat CD'ed, does anyone really give a toss about points, does it really make a big difference to your life ??
An overwhelming majority of the best games I've had have been for 5 D each ......
tendmote (100 D(B))

@NBabee How many points I've staked totally influences how I play! Some of my favorite games have been defeats where I only bet 5 or fewer points, but wreaked havoc. Of course, a few minutes ago I read up on how the "Ghost Ranking" works and those defeats count as much as my gains in higher stakes games.... lol.

Anyway if Ghost Ranking is going to be a factor in other people's play, then that affects me, so I've got to get out a spreadsheet and figure out ways to cause pain to people who care about Ghost Ranking. When I see someone voting "cancel" in 1905, I now know it's the Ghost Ranking that they've got in mind... how can I leverage that and cause them to suffer?

Incidentally, when I take over a power with one CD and one unit, does the person who resigned previously get a "pass" on Ghost Ranking, i.e. it doesn't affect them? It appalls me that I might be helping people improve.
Nigee, don't you think calling me a "dick" is a bit harsh and unneccesary? It's comments like that which make this forum at times an unpleasant place.

I actually think if someone CDs or is banned you should be able to see who they were automatically.

I only vote draw when a stalemate is reached. I am willing to cancel any game with cds. Does this piss you off tendmote? Stop being a baby, cancels are not diplomatic tools and your suggestion in the op is quite clearly metagaming. Site would be better off without people like you.

Better not send you off to Afghanistan, or Iraq, or Syria, or Egypt, or GITMO, or to the Sales or the kindergarten or the Real World, I heard they people like you down there.
What's it like in airy-fairy land?
No, I accept that people can be uncouth, but that doesn't mean that we should not strive to minimize the instantiations of that behaviour, or that we should condone that behaviour as social norm.

Look I understand that you are either a young person who thinks you are being really, really funny, or an older person that is dissatisfied in their life, but there's still no reason to be so coarse.
tendmote (100 D(B))
10 Jul 13 UTC
Actually I hadn't realized that this thread was going to be as controversial as it is, and the insults aren't helping. I just never realized that the "GR" system, which I'd heard of but not read up on until now, creates incentives for players that are not just different to the point system on the site, they're actually contradictory. Looking back I can see how some players' strategies were affected by these differences/contradictions, and wondering what the reaction should be for players not concerned with GR. Anyway, I'll drop it, this thread has become no fun at all.

If there's a CD early in the game, I always vote cancel. I prefer to leave it up for the duration of the game, mostly so that if there are any issues or arguments at the end of the game, especially if I win, I can point to that vote as proof I wanted to cancel the entire game.

Why is it that when some people decide to leave the site, they feel they must put up some public pronouncement, "Look at me!
