Gunboat to introduce new players to site
I introduced several friends to Webdiplomacy, through a full-press game. Several players (five!) indicated they want to play another gunboat game on the side to get the hang of the site. They're reasonably experienced, so we're looking for two reasonable other players to give some staunch opposition.
Who feels like a game?!

Thoughts of Americans about opinions of "foreigners"about Americans?
So, Americans, what do you think of our opinions of you? What do you think we think about you? I'm curious, because I hear rather often how we are all blaming America blablabla while I know no one who actually does that.

Thank you, abge, for your years of service to webdip
Abgemacht has been around for almost as long as the site, and he has been such a positive force for the site as a player and a mod/admin. His request to retire has been finally accepted :).
Please join me in thanking abge for his years of service.

I am about to graduate...
Hello WebDip community.
I am about to graduate high school (2 weeks after tomorrow) and I was wondering if anybody here has any general tips or experiences they can share with me and/or anybody who is graduating. I believe many of you on this site have gone through college or high school already, and was just wondering if anybody could ease my nerves about my future.
I am going to be attending University of River Falls - Wisconsin in the USA; I plan on becoming a teacher.

BRAVO to Bret Easton Ellis for saying all the truth a straight white man could never utter. Fuck gay political correctness. I tired of having to pay homage to every bung-plunger that feels the need to reveal his bedroom habits to me!

Men's Clothing
I just got my first real job last week and now I'm in a bit of a tight spot. My wardrobe needs to be updated to be semi-professional and done (mostly) on the kind-of cheap. My work environment is not overly formal (no tie or suit) but I still want to look good and purchase good quality and good fitting clothing and would like some recommendations.

Is he dead, Jim, or zipping along at Warp 9...thoughts?
What's everyone think about this latest adventure? (Come on out, you fellow Trekkies and casual viewers alike...though those of you that hated the Abrams reset--I thought it was good overall, rough in patches--well...if you didn't like Star Trek 2009, oh, are you going to hate this one...it really IS Star Trek 12/2, down to the very lines...but does it work?)

Using the vote button in gunboat
Can someone please clarify what the new rules are about using the vote buttons in gunboat? Back in the day communication using these buttons was accepted (eg. "Cancel" = let's stop fighting, "Draw" = let's take out the big guy, "Pause" = Somebody help me, etc.). I know there was some tl;dr about it in the Gunboat Tournament thread but if any mods/admins can clear it up here i'd appreciate it.

Kestas should be posting the revised rules on this by the end of the weekend. In the meantime please avoid using any site feature to communicate in any form.
ava2790 (232 D(S))
17 May 13 UTC
Ok. What, may I ask is the problem with using the vote buttons to communicate? It shouldn't be a disadvantage to somebody as long as everybody is allowed to use it.
Not everyone knows what they mean. Its unfair to newer players, as older ones have a distinct advantage. To keep things fair, we are asking you to avoid using any buttons to communicate.
ava2790 (232 D(S))

Got it. I will adhere to the rules of the site. However, I feel as if it's the same thing as if two players know what the lepanto is and execute it perfectly while a new player as Turkey is disadvantaged simply because he has no idea how to counter that move.

Including the draw button?
No, not including the draw button. We're talking specifically about the cancel and pause buttons, but this will be hashed out much clearer in the new rules kestas is going to put up.
ava2790 (232 D(S))
17 May 13 UTC
Also, how do the mods plan on enforcing these rules? i.e. How would they determine whether a player wants to cancel a game vs. pacify an opponent?
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
17 May 13 UTC
@ava, the problem is the pause button shouldn't be used at all for diplomatic gains, it doesn't exist in the board game and neither does the cancel button. So using them to communicate is going against the idea of no communication. I think gunboat players in general would agree there are other ways to signal your intentions to the other players in the game.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
17 May 13 UTC
@ava, some of Alderian's new changes will make it easier to enforce, but obviously the old wording of the rules still applies till Kestas gets the clarifications up in place.
I think cancel should only be available if someone has gone into CD or missed a phase.

I always use cancel when someone misses the first turn.Even if it is to my advantage if the CD country is my neighbor. Is this against the new rules?
Find that if someone misses the first turn/year it tilts the game out of wack.Players should realize this and vote to cancel. After the game is under way and someone goes CD it still screws the dynamics of the game but if you have spent enough time in the game carry on.

The whole CD thing annoys me. It's quite clear that you're signing up for a turn every x hours/days. And people just can't see to keep it going. Missing a turn due to real life, sure, but missing and coming back and missing again. Sheesh. Have some manners.

And don't talk to me about it being "hard" I have a full time job and a full time life and I travel internationally A LOT... If you can't sort it out, don't sign up! [end of rant]

Jmo,

You should know by now that any time you misspeak, it's a chance for 2WL to CAPITALIZE on it and get +1s. And any time there's a musical reference, it's time for people to make fun of me and get +1s.

@ava

The difference between the lepanto and the cancel button, is that anyone can look up the lepanto strategy on Google. It's been written about since like the 70s or something. You can't Google what the cancel button means on webdip in gunboat games. It's an unfair advantage. If you want to communicate, play full press, if not them don't communicate.

It means you couldn't knock up your girlfriend without a testtube full of some other guys sperm, 2WL. Your swimmers all drown before they get out of the start blocks.

I've introduced some real life friends to webdip in a slow game. Being the addicts we are, we're also starting a sidegame with some of the players. But just to repeat: Note that some of the players know each other.
