Can anyone defend socialism?
Can anyone defend the idea that "government" can produce a better society by diminishing individual freedom in exchange for increased socialist imposition of government power on the individual?

50-75% of 4% but that is still 7-10 million people. 2-3% of the population. If you live in an apartment complex with say 100 units, 2-3 of those units will be forced to spend more on coverage they don't want or pay a fine. Remember this line... "if you like your health plan, you will be able to keep your health plan".

Obama's so lucky the GOP isn't well organized right now. An effective national campaign against Obamacare could lead to sizable Republican majorities in both houses of Congress. But, knowing this horrible political class we're cursed with, they'll squander the opportunity like always.

Agreed. Republicans have been excellent campaigners for Democrats as of late.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
03 Nov 13 UTC
Yes, thanks Draug... I didn't catch the "individual" part. Well, the entire system is changing, I guess something like that is to be expected. If you could show that people are paying more for less, and/or that overall coverage hasn't improved, that would be an important statistic.
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Nov 13 UTC
No, but I was putting it into a better perspective: your neighbors. Let's say it is 2.5% of the population. What was the difference in the last election? 2.8% with 1.6% voting for someone other than Obama or Romney.if just 1.4% jumped ship to the other side because they knew he was lying his ass off, we'd have a different man in the White House.
Draugnar (0 DX)

"If you could show that people are paying more for less, and/or that overall coverage hasn't improved"

@YJ - Read the article. People are being forced to pay for coverage they can't use. Single men with no dependents having to pay for maternity care coverage? Retired empty nesters having to pay for it? People who take *no* prescriptions forced to pay for an expensive prescription plan that, when you look closely, requires so much on a deductible before they get the first prescription covered that only the chronically ill who take regular monthly prescriptions would ever use it.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
03 Nov 13 UTC
Yeah, and if that's how Presidents were elected, Gore would have won. It's not. Obama won 60% of the electoral college.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
03 Nov 13 UTC
OK, but that's assuming that the benefits of the system wouldn't swing things even further in the Democrat's favor. You're focusing on one small portion of the populace. I'm not saying this will happen, I'm saying nobody has shown me anything to say the opposite is true.
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Nov 13 UTC
Quite simply, YJ, Obama lied to us and roughly 10 million people will have to pay the price.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
03 Nov 13 UTC
It's not quite as simple as that, Draug. Of those 10 million, probably half aren't Obama's fault. Their plans are grandfathered in; the insurance companies are choosing to end the plans; they aren't being forced to.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
03 Nov 13 UTC
So he screwed over 5 million instead of 10...
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Nov 13 UTC
@Abgemacht - They are only grandfather if there wasn't a single premium increase between 2010 and now. Get real. No plan has been grandfathered in.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
03 Nov 13 UTC
No, premium increases are the only thing that are allowed to change without voiding the grandfather clause.

@bo

As I said, it was wrong of Obama and he should be called out on it, but only for the part that he's to blame for.
I'm still waiting for someone to explain to me how the FDA outlawing a private individually from buying raw milk from another private individual makes society better. I was told that raw milk caused epidemics, but that nonsense was easily refuted as false. If you believe socialism and some argument about the greater good trumps individual freedom then this example should be child's play.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Raw milk as in unprocessed and unpasteurized?
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Nov 13 UTC
No, abgemacht, you can't. Even organic milk has to be pasturized. Only a farmer with his own cows can legally get raw milk.

Draugnar (0 DX)

I guess I was wrong. I always assumed milk for human consumption had to be pasteurized. Of course, looking at that map, it's pretty clear the law doesn't intend it for human consumption.

So, gonna interrupt the new shitstorm for a bit and note that I am from the Czech Republic. My parents and grandparents suffered under "communism". Putin33's argument that fiveyear plans worked, or that people like it more now is stupid. My mother was denied studying opportunities simply because of the regime. My grandmother was turned into a hoarder, and my mother to some extent as well, because shortages of easily accessible things were engineered. My grandfather, a great man, who fought bravely in the second world war for the french foreign legion, was member of a crack troop, one of the best czech soldiers before the war, a man who regularly risked his life for his country, was first discharged from the military, then locked up, sent to the mines up in Jáchymov, pretty much the czech equivalent of siberian gulags, a major uranium mining center. He died prematurely from his treatment at the hands of the "communists". I say "communist" because they were actually more National Socialist, as in Nazi. Very nationalistic, emphasised state power, and while ultra right and ultra left are indistinguishable, I'd put them on the right.

"Of course, looking at that map, it's pretty clear the law doesn't intend it for human consumption."

What? It's literally a map of where raw milk is allowed for human consumption. The FDA has nothing to do with this. Every state has it's own laws.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
04 Nov 13 UTC
@abge, from the linked website 'Raw milk laws are a hodgepodge in this country; due mainly to the federal ban on raw milk for human consumption in interstate commerce, the laws are different state to state'

Federal ban only applies to interstate commerce, as limited by the constitution...

See for example: m.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2010/04/the-raw-milk-debate-dont-have-a-cow/38730/

I really like the claim "Drinking raw milk, in her view, prevents allergies and promotes a healthy immune system." - yes, of course more bacteria for the immune system to fight teaches it about fighting bacteria (and the fact that the immune system actually learns stuff, with zero neurons, is pretty cool by itself)

The claim, almost by definition validates the ban on raw milk (for public safety) - raw milk makes the immune system do work, which is good for the immune system, though sometimes this means you will make people sick.

What the *fuck* does an argument about unpasteurized milk have to do with socialism? If the US Government was proposing state ownership of dairy farms or something, I could understand that being relevant to the debate...
orathaic (1009 D(B))
04 Nov 13 UTC

socialism - where the government regulates that you can only sell pasturised milk.
communism - where the government (representing the people) owns all the cows and pasteurizes all the milk
capitalism - where the free market means that milk sellers are allowed to advertise their unpasteurized milk and hopes to sell it (for less, having not invested in pasteurization machines) despite the advocates for public health claiming that it causes disease... (there being less profit is increasing the cost of producing milk, nobody is doing it, but if they are they try to win over the market share by telling everyone the other guys are making people sick, and the other guys sue them for lies, and they counter sue for the same... Lawyers win) The people 'decide', likely based on which lies they've heard, or which advertising/propaganda they accept.

The Feds ban all kinds of things from crossing state lines. That is not at all what Draug and ShockTrooper were originally claiming.

Draugnar (0 DX)

I admit I was incorrect. I thought the FDA had banned it for sale, period. They can do that after all.

convenient LED table lamp with touch sensor

Halogen lamps are required to see the most powerful requirement improves through 2017. These lamps are the most just like conventional incandescents and will benefit from customer understanding, low preliminary cost and good lamp quality. Moreover, a rise in automobile manufacturing will encourage halogen front lamps requirement.
