NFL Week 5: Pick 'em--Wherein, Hey, There Are Actually a Lot of Good/Interesting Games!
So we kick off the week tonight with a game which looked like crap at the beginning of the year and now...looks slightly less like crap with the Bills and Browns going at it. Seattle meets Indy, the Niners and Texans square off on Sunday Night, the Raiders and Chargers play a LATER Sunday Night game no one outside California will watch, Pats/Bengals, Lions/Packers, and so on...so, once again, we ask you to...PICK 'EM!

Is that where you live? Cincinnati? How come that's never come up?

It has many a time. You live around here?
Draugnar (0 DX)
06 Oct 13 UTC
I ask cause I'd like to get a weekly F2F game going if I can find enough of us willing to come in. Mt. Healthy has a game store that will let us play or we can use my place in Fairfield or even rotate around between people with enough rooms for slipping off to negotiate.
krellin (80 DX)

Draug - I'm primarily recruiting software engineers for metro-Detroit. I have manufacturing positions open in Alabama, Indiana and Mississippi...

Yes....manufacturing in the United States is alive and well despite all the bullshit rheotirc from our assholes in Washington.

Didn't you guys once do a F2F on line?
Draugnar (0 DX)

There was one or two some others did, but I wasn't in them as the timing was wrong.

I know you live there. It comes up a lot. I'm making fun of you.

For what it's worth, I don't live anywhere near Cincinnati. Thank God.

This thread has basically turned into the "who has a better job thread."

So my job is to clean up the shit you don't eat and the crap you throw up in the toilet, bring you food that you pay for, and refill your drinks every once in awhile. All in all I probably make $20 an hour on a busy day. And pay no bills. Fuck you all.
krellin (80 DX)
06 Oct 13 UTC
Bo - good for you, and I mean that. Because the idea is that you work a shit job now, and never have to again.

That's why the whole "minimum wage" argument is such bullshit. I expect if I talk to you 10 years from now you will be making decent money and on your way to a comfortable life, because you APPLY yourself and have personal goals.
Putin33 (111 D)
06 Oct 13 UTC
So everybody who doesn't live a comfortable life is not applying themselves? It must be real hard to work in a bullshit office job where you get to play solitaire all day and charge people for stuff you don't do.

I love it how people who've never had to work for a thing in their life have these kinds of attitudes.
Putin33 (111 D)
06 Oct 13 UTC
"For what it's worth, I don't live anywhere near Cincinnati. Thank God."

Yeah you live in Illinois, which you've said so many good things about.
I tutor people in economics privately. I make $20 an hour.
Draugnar (0 DX)
06 Oct 13 UTC
Hey Bo, you may have a few more while you work through college (I worked as a clean up person at Kings Island for a WinterFest one holiday season cleaning up puke and nasty toilets and all other kinds of stuff for $6 an hour way back in the day), but they build character and you really appreciate it when you finally make it.
Putin33 (111 D)
06 Oct 13 UTC
That's a nice gig I don't know what Bo is complaining about, especially with no bills.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
06 Oct 13 UTC
Character? Fuck it, I actually enjoy it. I'm working with other people my age that are easy to get along with.

@krellin ... I make $2.10 an hour. At my weekend job I make $3/hour. I have never experienced minimum wage.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
06 Oct 13 UTC
Not complaining, Putin. Just saying you all should become waiters.
Putin33 (111 D)
06 Oct 13 UTC
Krellin doesn't know what minimum wage is, so please forgive him.

"Just saying you all should become waiters."

No thanks. I'd take autistic children over snooty, lazy, restaurant customers who like to pay 15 dollars for a sandwich or warmed over pasta any day.

"I love it how people who've never had to work for a thing in their life have these kinds of attitudes. "

Coming from Mr. PhD, that is priceless. You know I'm back in school working on my *Bachelor's* because I had to pay for my Associate's the first time around, right? Middle class household most of my life until my father broke the non-degreed Engineer glass ceiling, then we move to upper middle, at best. I bought my bass trombone by working a flea market at 13 and 14 and saving the money. Yeah, life of privilege. Uh huh. What shit job did you ever work before you lost your cushy university job because they "cut the funding" (I still think you got fired for your attitude, but you won't admit it if you did). What did you ever buy for yourself in junior high or high school and I'm not talking that mommy and daddy gave you money to go buy it. Your $100 per week allowance isn't earned money. I didn't get an allowance growing up.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

I deal with both. The SOBs at the restaurant and the kids with disabilities on weekends...
Draugnar (0 DX)
06 Oct 13 UTC
@Bo , $2.10 or $3 an hour is below minimum wage. Somebody is ripping you off.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
06 Oct 13 UTC
The $2.10/hour job is compensated by tips. It's legal. The $3/hour one is with a non-profit and I don't do it for the money anyway.
Draugnar (0 DX)
06 Oct 13 UTC
The minimum tip wage in Indiana is $2.13 per hour. You should really talk to management.

Sounds like it.

"What shit job did you ever work before you lost your cushy university job because they "cut the funding" (I still think you got fired for your attitude, but you won't admit it if you did)."

Grocery store produce clerk, grocery store cashier, gas station cashier, dishwasher. All minimum wage.

Go to hell.
Draugnar (0 DX)
06 Oct 13 UTC
Well, just one more thing for him to hate about me. I eat out more than I eat in, and I always tip well (15% for average service 20% or more for excellent service at lunch and 20% for average and as much as 35% for excellent service at dinner).

So he hates me for giving my money to the hard working wait staff. Good to know.

Really, you're working with kids with disabilities today?

" I eat out more than I eat in,"

Invictus (240 D)

Uh, you can eat healthily at restaurants without much effort at all.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
06 Oct 13 UTC
Whatever, Draug. I don't really care about 3 cents. Hate me for it if you want.

But tip me well.

@Putin ... yes, I assist at my religious school on Sunday mornings. I am typically with first grade but I've had special needs classes before (I hate that term). This is my fifth year doing it. Likely my last if I go anywhere outside 10 minutes away for college.

Openings for a learning game
I enjoyed both the School of War and Dojo of War experiences this summer. Doing both at the same time was idiocy on my part, and I still owe an EoG for Dojo. However, the amount of learning was good, and humbling. I am proposing another learning game.

Best way to make more money out of money?
So there's a bunch of money I'm not planning to spend for at least 2 years. Can I best keep it on a bank account as usual or are there more lucrative options that have about the same risk level as a bank account (practically none, since in this case the government returns the money if the bank goes boom)?

When is it OK to start watching basketball again?
I stopped watching basketball altogether after the LeBron James "Decision" and strike-shortened season turned the NBA into a soap opera telenovela. Is the nonsense over yet? Are people playing basketball again? Like they mean business? Is there a new Bill Laimbeer out there fouling out and taking a bow before a booing crowd?

Interesting Poll
What would happen if during an election between two candidates for a political office a poll was held, where instead of preference for either candidate, people could "mix" the candidates, assigning percentages to each..? That should yield interesting and data on your electorate distribution..

reputation
i think you can get along fine until you pass a certain threshold of douchebaggery, then you get a reputation, and a flood of stories get brought up in everyday gossip and your cause is lost.

so does anybody have strategies for maximizing douchebaggery without losing reputation? i think the only hope is to conform. if you are a nonconformist, then any small thing will seem big because people will constantly hear of it because you are often talked about.

Gov Shutdown? 83% Disagree...
http://washingtonexaminer.com/wheres-sense-of-crisis-in-a-17-percent-government-shutdown/article/2536862

That's right, 83% of Federal Spending is still flowing. Time to take the 17% that is "non-essential" and give it to the states where it belongs, or let private industry perform the same functions.

Give 1 pop culture thing you liked 10 years ago you now like less/dislike, and then 1 pop culture thing you disliked/liked less 10 years ago that you now like.

Isolationism
I don't know all that much about American history (self evident some might say), but I found this piece in the New York Review of Books challanged some of my preconceptions. The piece is a review of a recently published book on the New Deal. I found this section on isolationism as a function of US sectionalism particularly thought provoking -

We have far more important things to worry about--I'll just leave the government shutdown talk for you all...you can probably guess who I back anyway--but for now, let's take a minute and unite in rooting the Pittsburgh Pirates on tonight! The Mets were out of this before the season began...so let's all root for the Buccos (and their long-suffering fans!)
