Utility of History?
What is the use of history in society? Should it be taught in public institutions like schools? How should it be taught. In your opinion, does History have any use at all?

Diablo...is making me sad....
....much like fiber. Wife (bless her sexy daned heart!) bought me Diablo for Father's Day. I've gotten it to run *once*. Mostly, the loader loads, I hit "Play" and then....the great void...nothingness...no game. Sadness. Despair. Horrifying discontent. Anyone experience the same? Please advise.

World's Greatest Football Tournament
The world's premier football tournament is underway in Poland and Ukraine, and it's already looking like a cracker! Anyone with any thoughts about who will be joining England in the final?

Am I right in thinking that every single team can still make the knock-out stages? This may well end up being the best tournament ever! After the snooze fest that was the world cup I was almost ready to give up on international football...

...lets hope the bastards don't ruin it for next time by making it a 24 team tournament

Well, I would have to say yes. Greece has 1, but they play Russia who has 4. Head to head wins all tie breakers, so a win over Russia will put greece thru, right?

Poland has 2, and czech 3. Czechs need a tie with a Russia win/draw or just flat out win.

Poland must win, and they are thru.

Even Germany is not in yet. they can lose to Denmakr, portugal win vs Holland, and all have 6.. So GD would be the deciding facotr, then goals scored.

Right now Germany has 3 goals and is +2
Port has 4 goals and is 0
Denmark has 3 goals and is also 0

I guess if Germany only lsoes by 1, they are in?
No, I think they'd have to go to penalty shots. Let me know if this is right, but if Germany loses by one, both Germany and Denmark will have 6 D and be at +1 in the GD.

If Portugal wins as well (say by 1 goal) they will also be at 6 D and +1 in GD. That would leave a 3-way tie, right?

But that Denmark-Portugal game today was fantastic. The Danes were thrilling to watch. Portugal gave up after they were up 2-0 and only started trying again after the Danes tied it up

It is not done by penalty shots. IF it is an complete tie, it is decided by fair play.

If Germany would play a full 90 minutes like they played the first half vs Netherlands they would never lose.

They should -- Croatia didn't look all that impressive against the Irish.
Italy 2-0
Spain 3-1, Dunne scores in the 87th minute with a header from a cheap free kick.

You heard it here first.
So apparently if two Croat defenders run into each other at the top of the box, its a penalty against Italy. Come on
come on you i-talians....
2-0
spain 3-0

Does Italy lack the killer instinct to move on here?

It wouldn't surprise me if they drew Ireland and don't even advance, like a certain World Cup.

Ukraine vs France should be a good game. Two teams who actually want to play.

England is going to produce another 1-0 snooze fest vs the Swedes.
ghug (5068 D(B))

Ireland's still the best team in this cup, I don't care what the scores say.
I'm looking forward to Denmark-Germany. The Danes will give the Germans a run for it, i think.

And does anybody know what order the games are going to be in for the next group C pair? If Italy plays Ireland first and wins, then Croatia-Spain is going to be one hell of a game.
Putin33 (111 D)

I think Germany will bury the Danes since their striker was forced to change his corporate underwear, quite literally.

@ Goldfinger: The games are played simultaneously

I really hope you're as wrong about the England game as you were about Russia-Poland, Putin
Strx89 (100 D)
15 Jun 12 UTC
If England do win tonight, it should be reasonably tight; 1-0 or 2-1. The conditions will be more favourable in Kiev than they were in Donetsk at the start of the week, and having trained together a little more, we may start to see the team gel. I'm praying to see Ashley Young end up on the incisive through ball instead of James Milner.

@Goldfinger: "And does anybody know what order the games are going to be in for the next group C pair? If Italy plays Ireland first and wins, then Croatia-Spain is going to be one hell of a game."

"The games are played simultaneously"-Octavious

That is not true at all. During the group stages, 2 games are played in one day and the games are played approximately 2 hours 45 minutes apart.

Goldfinger, you can find such information here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Euro_2012#Group_stage

Croatia and Spain will play first. But, it will still be interesting for Italy because if Ireland manage to hold them to a draw (which in all likely they won't but, hey, Denmark beat Holland), then the Italian will not progress to the next stage.
Strx89 (100 D)

@ Sargmacher The final games of the group are always played simultaneously since a little incident when the Germans and Austrians used the knowledge of the other final game in their group's result to their advantage. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Germany_1%E2%80%930_Austria_%281982_FIFA_World_Cup%29

Both games will kickoff at 1945 GMT I think (have confirmed this on the BBC Sport Website; normally reliable for these matters)

France/Ukraine should be a good'n. Both teams will go for it, and it should be a good atmosphere. Expect France will win, but I don't have a good feel for this French side yet. Hope Ben Arfa plays ahead of Malouda.

Don't know what to expect from England yet, either. If they can get some control in midfield they'd actually be a force to be reckoned with, but I don't trust Stevie G. as a ball-winning/distributor; part of me wishes they'd put Milner in central midfield. A bigger part wishes they'd brought Scholes/Carrick. Still, England 1-0

You're on great form this tournament, Putin! Could you do me a big favour and predict that England have no chance of making the final? Please???
I was rooting for the Swedes too :( Maybe I should stop rooting for the underdog, since there haven't been many of them who have won so far haha

I hope England don't play Carroll or Walcott, both of them are rubbish, and Wellbeck couldn't hit a barn door with an axe ........ for Sweden that Mellberg is like a snail, he should be warming the bench

The English are just about ready to play a big game; if the Ukraine game goes well, I say bring on Spain/Italy/Croatia in the quarters.
Octavious (2701 D)

England are as they've always been. Prone to crazed bouts of defensive incompetence, and with an attack that suffers from a lack of a plan B. They've improved in the sense that they seen to have developed a greater resolve and improved team dynamic under Roy, but they remain a team that can be a match for the best only if they have a bit of luck.
Kochevnik (1160 D)

Carroll was absolutely brilliant last night, which was a real surprise to me. Not saying he looked a 35-million pound striker, but at least he looked capable of doing some real damage in the tournament. I'd play Rooney and him up front together and see what happens, but I'm sure Roy will go with Wellbeck and Rooney.

Walcott was also very, very good, probably MoM despite only being on for 25 minutes. Ashley Young was quite poor, although he's sort of a hot/cold player so may just have been off.

Still, though, I can't see England making a serious run at winning the tournament. Probably lose in the quarter finals, would be my guess.

I'm not all that sure of what the general musical tastes are on this site. This was the BIGGEST bullshit game I've played in. As soon as I showed up, England announced to me that he would be promptly CDing at 12 AM (~45 minutes in the future). Russia CDed. Austria wasn't doing well, so decided to try and lose as fast as he could. AND NO ONE THOUGHT THIS TO BE WRONG! What a joke.
