Ursa - I'm neither agreeing nor disagreeing with you, but would you mind explaining how that is degrading and disgusting? For the sake of my question, let's say its being done by a couple in the privacy of their own home and not on tape. (Clearly not porn, but definitely an aspect of life that porn effects).

Crazy - I think the problem with children watching porn is the same problem is that it warps their view of what the real thing should be like, only it is more severe as the average 12 year old has not had sex and has no experience in sexual matters with other people. What porn does to children is it often makes them believe that women should be treated the way they are in pornos in real life, which can lead to kids being disrespectful and degrading to women who they may be having sex with. To me, if you happen to be 17 and emotionally mature enough to realize that its a movie and not reality, and you feel like watching some porn, then thats ok, (porn laws are you have to be 18 to watch it where I live, not sure about other areas) but the problem arises when a younger guy or girl watches porn without realizing that it isn't the only way to have sex, and they are influenced by it either by treating women poorly during sex, or if the girl sees it and gets disgusted by how the women are treated and wants no part of it, she may become wary of sex because of how she thinks she would be treated.

That's obviously all speculation, as I've never known a girl under 16 to watch porn, so maybe its all a load of shit, some of the ladies on here will have to comment.

On some level it can warp anyone's view of the real thing, not only a child's. I'm not sure that I buy into the idea that maturity necessarily comes at any particular age. THe idea with children though can certainly be problematic.

Whether a girl under the age of 16 has watched porn or not, she can be affected by it if she's in a relationship with someone who has by way of her partner's expectations and the choice whether to meet them or not.

In addition with the proliferation of cellphone technology, kids have all the tools to make and send porn themselves. Sexting is becoming a big problem. A kid might think that she's sending a picture to her boyfriend and then turn around to find it posted on the internet. Technology, while a great thing, makes it extremely difficult for parents to monitor what their kids are exposed to. Basically, we've gone from a society in which parents could fairly easily prevent pornography from entering the houshold, to one in which they do not stand a chance.

vamm - in respect to your question for the ladies to answer - i had access to mild porn, not of the video variety but other forms which were still quite graphic. I don't think it did me any harm and i still waited til i was 18 and felt comfortable in my relationship before had sex. Although perhaps i am more open minded and less shocked by requests (like the come on my face thing) than some because of that access to porn.


It seems to me (although i might be wrong) that over at least the past 10-20 years, porn seems to be a guys first experience of sex. Mostly in the form of dirty mags, school boys have been buying them for years no? I think this kinda porn doesn't have too much of an effect as it's quite mild and it just encourages their imagination etc but i think porn videos have a much greater impact as its far more graphic and less imagination is needed.

@ crazy - You're also forgetting the plus points for women starting to use porn though. Which is that women are becoming more sexually aware, more aware of their bodies and wanting to be sexy, therefore i'm pretty sure they are encouring sex far more too!! In some ways porn is definately encouraging this. Especially if you think of the more female friendly porn.

It was probably always normal for men to see pictures of womens bodys, graphic ones too. but think how strange it must have been for a women in her first sexual experience to have no idea what a penis looks like, or maybe not even knowing really what you can, should, might be able to do with it.

don't know, i started viewing porn at 12, and i never have thought women should be treated in real life the way they r in porn, nor i have thought that's the only way to have sex, though maybe another kind of erotic material, different of usual porn, influenced me also since i was too young

Actually I am kinda worried about the whole 'porn' culture, perhaps not by internet porn but more popular culture. The message channels like MTV are sending into the world. People today might think the world is divided into 'pimps' and 'ho's', in which the latter are there to pleasure the first. This lust culture degrades both men and women into objects of sex.

Ursa - If you don't want that to happen to you then by all means don't let it happen to you, but I think calling what somebody else does like to do disgusting is a bit far. Provided both people want to do it, and it doesn't harm anybody else, I have no problem either way with it. If you do have a problem with that, then just don't do it, but just because you don't like it doesn't make it disgusting or degrading to everybody.

With regard to adults, I have no problem with it. It probably plays some part in women becoming more forward about sex, but it would be hard to show causation. It might be just as true that women becoming more forward about sex (from other sources) has lead to more instances of them viewing pornography. An adult has the right to make any choices (within the law) that she likes on the subject. In that regard I'm closer to vamm's stance. I may personally think that it's something to be avoided for a variety of reasons, the most pressing being professional ones. I also respect the right of others to disagree.

Perhaps, you're reading more into my stance than is truly there based upon our differences with regard to religion? My concern is about sexting and the ease to which children may access pornography. To a large degree kids can be exposed quite by acident. I was surprised at the videos that popped up alongside "Thomas the Train" on an internet search the other day "DragonballZ-Goku strips Bulma" and "Hidden cam voyeurs Mexico" were two of them. I haven't watched them and they may be entirely harmless, but still kids can be exposed to stuff entirely by accident. While I agree that technology is a great thing, (even said so earlier) I think that it's a bit naive to say "sexting may increase and society may become more sexual" as if it ends there. The internet is a place where one can get information on a great many topics, but it's a tool. Like any tool it can be used or misued. The problem is it's a lot harder to keep out of the hands of children than a circular saw. At the extreme. there are instances of kids being targeted by paedophiles on the internet. Do you think, as a parent, I should not be concerned? Upon what would you base that assessment?

Yeah I think you are missing my point. I'm not in the least concerned with any "road to immorality". My concern is about locus of control within a family. I think that parents should have the right to decide what their children are exposed to.

@vamm: you may have point with your 'discrimination' argument. May I still say it's degrading and disgusting for me? And I do think unequal sexual relations are never healthy. Even if the suffering half agrees to it. I doubt if sadism and masochism are normal feelings and not rather sexual perversions. And if a person has such feelings, should that be encouraged? Getting pleasure from hurting others is not a very admirable treat in my book.
