I can't remember where I saw it, but I loved the good neighbour tax suggestion. Your neighbours each decide how much tax you should pay. These values are then averaged, and that's what you pay. However, the figures people write down are published for all to see.
I think it was on one of those 'learn politics' scenario's at school, but I thought it was quite interesting. After all, if you charge your neighbour a lot, next year everyone will charge you a lot.

The solution to taxes is simple. First, adopt the gold standard so that inflation is no longer a concern. This means that you can now print as much money as you want. However, since its on the gold standard, you would have to print (or create) gold. So, we should give tons of funding to NASA. See, we couldn't turn lead into gold, but if there are an infinite number of universes, someone figured it out, so we just have to find them. Naturally, we'll have to fund our military to make sure that we'll be able to defeat the aliens who figured out alchemy. Wow, that means that Diplomat's ideas actually make sense! [/satire]

Hmm, that gives me an idea. Print trillions of dollars. Use that to pay for turning Mercury into Gold. Then, make a new currency based on the Gold standard, since the previous currency was extremely inflated.
