Well, I still think it's better off as a sort of Gunboat variant, but then... I've always been bad at Gunboat. =d
Centurian (3257 D)
12 May 09 UTC
As soon as you add actual diplomacy the commentators will probably just make the game more annoying for the players, but pointing out mistakes or potentials for stabbing etc.

You might improve your gunboat record if you were quicker to abandon losing alliances Chrisp, ie the one with Turkey. Its going to end for you when France gets involved in the south and then Turkey will pick up a couple more fleets and no one is going to be able to stand up to him.
Chrispminis (916 D)

Another similar but interesting variant I can think of, is if there are 7 commentators who are each tied to a player (secretly?) and with whom the player is allowed to talk to. However, the commentator still has their own goals which may be completely at odds with the player they're allowed to talk to.

how woulld the player talk to them

email presumably. It sounds very cool, and avec a little more intrigue between the commentators, about who is favouring and stuff like that.

Sorry for posting, but since everyone else is doing it... :)

And all the fun, fine! My thoughts...
Dang it, France! I thought for sure you would go with the easier option of another long convoy from Brest. Oh well

Onar (131 D)

Well, dj, this seems to be a long-running problem in Germany/france alliances. Once england is down, they have a scant few other options. Also why I tend to prefer England/Germany(But that's rather irrelavant.). The way I see it, Russia is going to be at odds with Turkey, but may alleviate some of its pressures by striking out against the German, with French help. A new alliance structure will be formed from there, and the survivors will be left to fight for dominance.
Onar (131 D)
12 May 09 UTC
Those survivors, in my prediction, of course, being Italy, France, and either Russia or turkey.
djbent (2572 D(S))
12 May 09 UTC
well this season will be a turning points that's for sure. france should support germany into belgium again, and possibly to take london. but germany may prefer to use the north sea fleet for support at den or an attack on norway (which russia would have to support). i don't think the english demise means that france has to attack germany - italy is also a valid second target. however, the current placement of units would make that a bit more difficult. in france's shoes, that what i would do, however, especially keeping in mind a desire to limit the spread of turkish fleets in the mediterranean. france vs the weak italians seems like a better gamble than france vs ruined england + fairly strong germany.

russia is the other factor, but they need to focus on their southern problem. turkey can hit them hard soon. and that would also incline germany to turn south next.
Onar (131 D)
12 May 09 UTC
The more I look at this game, the more it seems Turkey is the best player. Austria may have the most skill, but Turkey is the fastest-growing, and has the smallest number of actual threats.

Will we find the comentators goals , after the game is over ?
Xapi (194 D)
13 May 09 UTC
Sure, but I think we haven't got 7 commentators.
Xapi (194 D)
13 May 09 UTC
Hence we won't have 7 players for Meta-Meta Diplomacy.
djbent (2572 D(S))
13 May 09 UTC
lol @ xapi i think you're right

we're got centurian, onar, trip and myself regularly commenting and aoe3rules popping in and out. that's just five, right? or am i missing someone?
maverob (0 DX)
13 May 09 UTC
But aren't you supposed to give us instruction or only coment what happended. Because nobody gives anymore instruction what should I do what province should I take.

or maybe now is too dangerous cause other players can see and take defense.

just asking to bump the forum

RUSSIA- Please do the following: Sev->Rum, Gal supports

AUSTRIA- Cut support at Serbia.

Thus Turkey can either choose to defend Rumania but not get Sevastapol or get sevastapol but lose Rumania. Its a solid move.

As for FRANCE- Don't listen to Djbent. She is a German commentator me thinks. You have gotten what you need from the German, now time to dump him hard. There is no one that is going to threaten you, everybody else has their own problems. Take down the western rival and solidify the West for yourself. The game will be yours for the taking.
trip (696 D(B))
13 May 09 UTC
russia & aut: see centurian

germany: i don't get it. you were in position to take belg but you don't, and you move in the north before you have proper support. now, even if you do take belg, you're in danger of not building.

france: looks like england is going to take out his frustration on germany. thats great for you. get your builds, solidify your ground game and keep moving forward. i don't know if an attack on germany is warrented right now, but its up to him to prove his worth as an ally before you try to help him again. if he can't pull out of the situatin he's put himself in, then you should be able to clean up.

Yeah, you can't really hit Germany just yet France. But eventually. If you wanted to be hurt him you could support hold Belgium in theory. But I think supporting yourself into Picardy, if only to cut off the retreat, is in order.

RUSSIA- You should take a stab at Norway btw.

GERMANY- Ok, England is really cramping your style. North sea is critical hear. You have a couple of options. Support Denmark to Skag, North Sea to Skag. Support hold Denmark (wuss) or support Russia into Norway. The sooner England is dead the better for you, its that simple.
Onar (131 D)
13 May 09 UTC
I think that supporting Russia to Norway is your best option here. It hurts your biggest threat, and puts you in position to ally with a russia who isn't in a terrible position.
Austria, if you can get some help from turkey, you might be able to salvage this game. And if russia could pull his head out of your lands, you might even prosper.
And if the purple bear manages to take a new territory, He'll be looking at two builds this turn!
Centurian (3257 D)
13 May 09 UTC
Well I don't see Russia getting two builds. He's probably going to lose Sevastapol.
Onar (131 D)
13 May 09 UTC
Porbably isn't a definitley. And who knows? The turks may decide to show mercy. Can't kill a fellow muslim, right?
Centurian (3257 D)
13 May 09 UTC
Just seven minutes. How exciting.

And Russians aren't Muslims. Although admittedly some people in the Sevastapol area are.

france keeps wreaking havoc on the pitch, germany continues to put in a seb-par performance, russia looks like a dog that's been kicked around too much, italy's a chicken with it's head cut off, austria a doomed by clever turtle, and turkey continues to lay waste to all that's in its path.

Can an unsupported navy unit convoy when it has been atatcked by another unit?
http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=11227

Check out the English Channel move... I would not have thought this was allowable as the naval units 'activity' for the round is defending the ENG, rather than defending AND convoying. Can a moderator cvheck this out please?

RE: Late-game betrayal
I wanted the opinion of more experienced players about my betraying Germany in this game http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=9966, was I wrong to betray him for the win or was it his fault for leaving himself exposed to an attack from me?

How (exactly) does the '/draw' voting work?
Do draw votes expire? (I assume not)
When exactly are they processed with respect to ending the game? (The message appears immediately, but does that mean that the last vote to draw ends the game immediately? Or at end of the next turn? end of the next build phase?)

guide to special cases
Is there a nice guide to special cases and examples of this and that country configuration and set of orders somewhere? I read the manual at diplom.org and it didn't resolve it.

My question is if A1 supports A2 into B, but B attacks A1 and A2 is also dislodged, does A2 go into B?

Probably a real n00b question, but it has been years since I played Dip regularly. Can one country support-hold another country that is itself executing a support action, or does support-hold only apply to a country that is truly holding?
