What are all the different ranks in phpDiplomacy?
I've seen quite a few different ranks on this site both good and bad.
I was wondering how many there are, and what significance do they hold in the gameplay.

Getting lucky
It seems to me that in most of the games that I have taken part in on here that the winner has won because one of player's neighbours has pulled out of the game and left his centres free to be taken without hindrance. Would that be a fair assessment of games in general?

The fatal flaw
I think the length of time it takes to put someone into civil disorder is the potentially fatal flaw of phpdiplomacy.

Kestas, if you could please have a look at http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=1333

It would be very sweet if you could set Gihren Zabi to cd in all his games.

Php's glitch or mine?
I've found that recently, I've had a problem with dialogue between myself and other players being unreadable because instead of the page elongating as new discussions are added in-game, they just extend behind the map and cannot be read. I was wondering if anyone else has had this difficulty, or if it is just my own computer being silly.

Convoy disruption
Pardon the (probably) irate tone of this message. In the game North by Northwest, I ordered a convoy into Denmark. I recieved the error message, "Your fleet was attacked, so couldn't convoy." Now, I own the game, and the rulebook clearly states that "An attack on a convoying fleet that does not dislodge it does not disrupt the convoy." Am I missing something here?

supporting supports
if a unit is supporting a move and itself is supported by another unit then can it not still uphold its support even if it is attacked by an unsupported enemy? My example: MAO attacks enemy unit in Portugal supported by Spain. spain is supported by Marseilles. Enemy attacks Spain with no support. GameMaster then tells me that the attempt to take over Portugal has failed because the support from Spain failed as it had to see off the attack from Gascony. But shouldn't the support from Marseilles allow it to see off this attack without losing its ability to support the attack on Portugal? Is this perhaps a fault in the software?

Ranks
How are ranks calculated? I read somewhere that it depended on the numbers of games you have won, games you have played and the games you are currently playing. But what is the exact formula? I thought it depended on the win ratio, but apparently it doesn't.

Childish behaviour
This really takes the biscuit! You have 1 unit left, no supply centres, and it's Autumn so rather than do the honorable thing and disband, you retreat and hold everyone else up an extra 24 hours without finalising.

Of course I complain about this, and the perpetrator responds with a lengthy diatribe laden with offensive language. And yet even while typing this, he still doesn't find enough time to click "finalise"... he is out of the game, he knows it, and he is deliberately keeping all the other players hanging on out of what can only be spite!

I won't be so cruel as to publically name this person, but I will say that he is one of the prime crusaders against "metagaming" - he expects to get away with behaviour like this because holding a grudge into the next game is SOOO wrong! He wants to have his cake and eat it!!

Fri 06 Jul Autumn 1910, Diplomacy: Nothing happened involving your units in this phase.
Sat 07 Jul Autumn 1910, Retreats: Nothing happened involving your units in this phase.
Sun 02 PM Autumn 1910, Unit placing: Nothing happened involving your units in this phase.
Mon 02 PM Spring 1911, Diplomacy: Nothing happened involving your units in this phase.
Tue 02 PM Spring 1911, Retreats: Nothing happened involving your units in this phase.
02:40 PM Autumn 1911, Diplomacy: Nothing happened involving your units in this phase.
-----------------------------
I'm scrubbed in this game, with no units, and have been for a few turns, but some areas are still coloured in my country's colour and I think that's why this game is still showing up under my profile.

'England'
I am British and it ergo pains me to see my country called 'England' in this game. England is one of the United kingdom’s three mainland member countries. Whales and Scotland are both countries (with limited sovereignty) ruled by national assemblies (Scotland by the Scottish assembly) (and whales by the welsh assembly). The foreign policy of Scotland, whales and the English law are managed from the houses of parliament in London (in England). On an international level 'England', 'Scotland', 'whales' and ‘northern Ireland' (another country in the UK, in Ireland though, not on the mainland) do not exist. The country (in pink, currently called ‘England’) on this game is not England it is the United Kingdom, I feel that the name should be changed on this game, at least to 'The UK'
Or if you are feeling pedantic; ‘The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland’ :)

Calling the UK ‘England’ is similar to calling the USA Florida.

Scots, Welsh and Irish tend to be very patriotic, mostly to their own nations (other than unionists, who are patriotically British).

The English, meh, they aren't really into that sort of thing (unless England qualify for a football tournament). Most don't know when St George's Day is. And as the English form a majority of the British, British patriotism suffers the same fate.

Whether or not they are proud to be English or British, the one thing they are certain of is that they don't want anything to do with Europe (or at least the French and the Germans!).

@Locke: I think a Country with a constitution and where people had to fight to build it doesn't necessarily make its inhabitants patriotic (even if it helps). Italians aren't more patriotic than english at all ;)

Noodlebug:
Although questioning Austria's supremacy over the Austro-Hungarian union is understandable, you shouldn't have doubts about Romania's appearance on this map since it was an independent state from 1859, whilst in the diplomatic circles was called Rumania from its french-like denomination - Roumanie.

As for UK vs. England, I for one don't feel the difference, but I think I would feel it if I were britt, so I understand hippykin's concern. Nevertheless, it's a game, take it as it is because if we were to change things to match reality, even that of 1900, most borders/frontiers would be changed and this game wouldn't be playable anymore.

Comment on "Rumania"

Rumania is spelled "Rumania" in English, but pronounced "Romania". also they were going to put "Romania" on the map but that conflicts with "Rome". any questions?

Comment on the boring new Prime Minister:
well i agree. he's certainly too boring to remember to appear on TV or Yahoo! occasionally because i've never heard of him.

I am American but was living in Edinburgh for a time with my family a couple years back. My sister was considering a party for July 4th (US Independence Day) and asked her friends in school there if they would be offended or anything. Their response: "Of course not, it wasn't us you won independence from."

sidenote: she attended the same high school while we were there as Sean Connery

I too lament the lack of patriotism but I don't think it's the fault of political correctness culture. I'd simply tie it to the huge US cultural influence and actual lack of *any* positive representation of Britain by the school system/popular media. Apathy is the new rebellion.

You wouldn't imagine the fuss you can cause in Scotland by ordering a 'full English breakfast' :)
krokodil (823 D)

Americans are so Patriotic because of the propaganda they are subjected to. Britain and 99 percent of other democratic governments don't have nearly as much control over the media as America does.
isbian (106 D)

Americans are patriotic because they have really good reasons to be. They fought off the English in the Revolutionary War, then they helped win World War 1 and 2, and now their country has become super-rich, and they are happy. On Independence Day, you see fireworks, and in grade school you have to recite the Pledge of Allegiance every morning. But now, America is pretty screwed up, and doesn't seem to be improving much.
dangermouse (5551 D)
27 Jun 07 UTC
@aoe3 Haha...no I mean that Sean Connery also went to that school when he was a kid.

America is a big country. While it's true that there are a good number of extremely patriotic citizens, I suspect that the there are even more who have next to none.

You can be patriotic without supporting your government. In fact, if your government is corrupt or not acting in the interests of your country, it is your patriotic duty to oppose them!

political debates are fun!

There is one theory that seems to reasonably explain why the general population of the UK dislike (and perhaps fear) national patriotism (towards the uk). This is a theory publicised by David Blunkett;
After WW2 the British people began to fear national patriotism because of what happened in Nazi Germany, Hitler’s aggression propaganda was about "winning back land and restoring national pride" – as the Germans were very patriotic at this time, Blunkett proposed that the British public after WW2 bean to fear patriotism because of what had happened in Germany – the fear of the government having so much control over peoples lives - as the Nazi German government did.
Locke (1846 D)
27 Jun 07 UTC
Yes, but we are sliding into a state that is virtually completely Government controlled anyway without being particularly patriotic.

Many of the laws passed these days are restricting civil liberties and we are happily accepting and endorsing them. I don't really mind increased Government control because it helps to prevent union control and a constant threat of strikes but we are almost completely controlled by the 'nanny state' that inhibits the individual making decisions.

The problems arise when the government no longer serves the people because the people serve the government.

The US is fucked as I see it (and I do live there so I know what I'm saying) George Washington had it right by being against the party system... They are too busy getting elected and not busy enough fixing things. In addition to this, Bush is a moron. I can only hope the rest of the people over here wake up and realize this.

I can't believe how smug the English are with this crap. After all, in 1901, Turkey was still technically the Ottoman Empire. It wasn't Turkey until much later, but nobody's complaining. Leave it up to the English to complain that one of the powers is called England and not UK.

Error triggered: An assertion, $helpunitid, was not met as required.
I'm in the game "mid level players", and when I try to enter the game, I get this error:

"Error triggered: An assertion, $helpunitid, was not met as required..

"The details of this error have been successfully logged and will be attended to by a developer."

This has been happening all day, ever since I tried to submit my orders this morning. Will I be able to continue playing this game?

incorrect resolution of move
I had my own army destroy my own army!! what is that all about?? I was moving an army from tyrolia to venice with support from trieste and an army from vienna to tyrolia with support from bohemia. When the move finished my army which was going to venice actually disappeared from the board (before any retreat/disband orders were given) and my army from vienna was in tyrolia!! and I quote: "Autumn 1903, Diplomacy: Your army at Tyrolia was overwhelmed by an attack from the army from Vienna, and forced to retreat." Surely you can't defeat your own army??

Question about support
Here is how I understand it: a unit can be the target of a support hold order if and only if it is not moving. It can be holding or supporting and a support hold order will be valid, but if the order is to move, then it cannot be the target of a support hold. If this is the case, then why was there a stalemate when Livonia was successfully supported by Moscow into StP in this game?

Alert about playing with "mates" Gissett and noonan
I would like to alert other players about joining games with Gissett and noonan. They allied in a game I am in and they worked together even when it was not in noonan's interest and continued working together even after Gissett attacked noonan. Noonan may not be a full proxy for Gissett, but that is the impact. I have copied noonan's response to me when I challenged him about his play. You are forewarned.

"Look. i am not a proxy for anyone. i am just not bothered with this game given my mate stabbed me. i have no chance so i am more nterested in the games i can win. sorry. thats how it is"

Are we ever going to create arrows showing movement into unnocupied neutral centers?
moves like Kie-Den, Bud-Ser, and Mar-Spa don't have arrows going from the home center to the unoccupied center. is this because it makes it harder to read the names? (i'm sure everyone has noticed this already)

Please explaine this.
Got these 2 results in this game:
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=1295

1) Spring 1908, Diplomacy: Your fleet at Rumania prevented the army at Sevastopol from giving a support move against your fleet at Rumania.

2) Spring 1908, Diplomacy: Your fleet at Skagerrack disrupted the fleet at Skagerrack's convoy order.

Question 1: I thought that a unit could not cut support that was directed at it.

Question 2: What the heck does the number 2 mean?
