For example, if I were to write, "LOGIC IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING! PLEASE MAKE A COHERENT ARGUMENT!" it comes across as an accusation, and makes you likely to write, "I AM LOGICAL! HOW DARE YOU ACCUSE ME OF NOT BEING LOGICAL, YOU IGNORANT FUCK!"

See? It's effective, but doesn't promote logic.

You make a good point about slavery and you could add women's rights or forcing children up chimneys. All were social norms in their day. But times change - you can argue that lsavery should be re-introduced, women denied the vote and children forced to work now - argue away. but break today's norms by keeping slaves, denying a woman a vote and sending young children up a chimney and you will be called out. Trying to equate big policy isses like slavery with the rather trival right to use the word nigger is futile. I can't see you being able to raise much of a crowd in you local town square.

I get your point about words only meaning what meaning you give them. It's a very deconstructionist and semantic (in the true, academic, linguistic sense of the word) argument, but some words carry the full burden of history. These are not easily erased. History has a power, and the n-word (no, I will not say it, nor even write it) carries the full burden of segregation, the Ku Klux Klan, slavery, and genocide. I request that you not be so glib with it.

Funny...nigger doesn't seem to carry that history for blacks. It is in their music, their comedy, on the sports fields, in home and casual conversation!! The *evidence* contradicts your feel-good white guilt beliefs.

It's their history, not your history. People mark tragedies in their own histories, and it's important for a sub-culture to memorialize cultural losses. It's an act of unimaginable personal and cultural hubris to be so cavalier with someone else's history. Use what words you like, but each time you do, it erodes my respect for your views and for you personally.

Good lord, hecks! OF COURSE I am being held responsible. There is, right now, an Eagles football player who got caught on phone video saying nigger...he might lose his job over it. It is *widely* acknowledged that nigger is used **all the time** ON the field where he plays and in the locker room....but this *white* man is going to be held responsbile for this single word, and *lose his livelihood* because of this word. ALL AROUND HIM the players that are supposedly offended by this word USE IT IN FRONT OF HIM....but he uses it and, if not fired, will potentialy be injured beyond repair on the field of play...these are the threats currently coming out against him.
