Gunboat to introduce new players to site
I introduced several friends to Webdiplomacy, through a full-press game. Several players (five!) indicated they want to play another gunboat game on the side to get the hang of the site. They're reasonably experienced, so we're looking for two reasonable other players to give some staunch opposition.
Who feels like a game?!

Thoughts of Americans about opinions of "foreigners"about Americans?
So, Americans, what do you think of our opinions of you? What do you think we think about you? I'm curious, because I hear rather often how we are all blaming America blablabla while I know no one who actually does that.

I am about to graduate...
Hello WebDip community.
I am about to graduate high school (2 weeks after tomorrow) and I was wondering if anybody here has any general tips or experiences they can share with me and/or anybody who is graduating. I believe many of you on this site have gone through college or high school already, and was just wondering if anybody could ease my nerves about my future.
I am going to be attending University of River Falls - Wisconsin in the USA; I plan on becoming a teacher.

Men's Clothing
I just got my first real job last week and now I'm in a bit of a tight spot. My wardrobe needs to be updated to be semi-professional and done (mostly) on the kind-of cheap. My work environment is not overly formal (no tie or suit) but I still want to look good and purchase good quality and good fitting clothing and would like some recommendations.

Using the vote button in gunboat
Can someone please clarify what the new rules are about using the vote buttons in gunboat? Back in the day communication using these buttons was accepted (eg. "Cancel" = let's stop fighting, "Draw" = let's take out the big guy, "Pause" = Somebody help me, etc.). I know there was some tl;dr about it in the Gunboat Tournament thread but if any mods/admins can clear it up here i'd appreciate it.

Facebook Supports Fascism

Not at all

Facebook is useful because it has an effective monopoly. That will soon change.

You can always click the little "Get the fuck off my Facebook" button in the corner of the ad.
krellin (80 DX)
16 May 13 UTC
Facebook has little to no use, in reality. You can actually get by in life quite well without Facebook Octavious. You can communicate with friends apart from facebook, etc.

You choose to use FB because you like it, not out of some necessity.

You come on here is a tirade telling us what a horrible company FB is...and yet you use it. Hell, the funny part is I couldn't tell you what ads come up...you are silly enough to even look at the ads. You are such a Facebook CHUMP it isn't even funny.

I suspect you'll be checking status again tonight, too.

I'll be taking a walk in the fresh air.

why don't you just cancel your account and grow up, live life, etc etc etc. and spend more time here! lol
Octavious (2701 D)
16 May 13 UTC
You can, hecks, but after doing that scores of times and still having the same general mix of ads I sort of gave up.

I complain to facebook on a regular basis for its many failings, and facebook complains to me on a regular basis for having an email address that expired 4 years ago. We are together until there is an alternative, and no longer.
krellin (80 DX)
16 May 13 UTC
And before you ask if I use Facebook - yes, I do, as little as possible, but because I have two children who use Facebook and other social sites, I keep active memberships so I can keep an eye on them - as any parent worth their salt would do.
Draugnar (0 DX)

And even if they are going down. So be it. Reflecting the outrage over facebook here is futile and serves no purpose here. To the best of my knowledge, none of us work for or are in any way affiliated with facebook. Express your outrage by creating a Facebook Fascists are us page.
krellin (80 DX)
16 May 13 UTC
"We are together until there is an alternative"

Haaaa ha ha ha ha! God what a good little sheep you are. "Alternative"? The alternative is DON'T USE IT. You DO NOT HAVE TO look at the ads or click on them! You don't have to "like" anything. You don't have to tell me that you just took a shit and read a chapter of your book. You don't have to share some idiots "funny" postcard -- the shit we used to call spam in our email. You don't HAVE to do any of this...therefore you DO NO NEED an alternative.

Learn to live life...not live facebook, brother.

I'm begging you...you apparently have an addiction.
hecks (164 D)
16 May 13 UTC
When you hid the ad, did you select "Block all from British Union of Fascists"?
Octavious (2701 D)
16 May 13 UTC
@ krellin

The trouble is, krellin old chap, that work in its wisdom have encouraged the use of facebook to communicate to the masses. As such there are various groups that I have to be a member of and pay attention to. It also does serve a useful purpose, despite its many flaws. Just saying no is not an option.

krellin (80 DX)
16 May 13 UTC
Work forces you to use it? for marketing or what?

Apart from work, just saying no is absolutely an option. You are simply making excuses.

And it serves no useful purpose that can't be replaced by other means. NONE.
Octavious (2701 D)
16 May 13 UTC
@ hecks

In the same way that muting, to pick a member of this site at random, krellin does not make krellin go away, hiding an ad does not mean the ad ceases to exist. I am not angry because they have shown it to me, I am angry because it is there. I am angry because Facebook and Nazis are doing business together. I don't like facebook, but I really don't like Nazis. It annoys.

Facebook doesn't support fascism. Fascism supports Facebook.
Octavious (2701 D)

@ krellin

The british union of fasicsts are Nazis. Their former leader was Mosley who was an ally of Hitler. In WW2 the party leadership were all arrested and locked up because of it. On their website (which I did click on so facebook would charge them :) ) they have videos of Mosley and lots and lots of black shirts and marching and Nazi salutes.

They are Nazis.

@Oct - the real trouble here is that *you* are offended that a company chooses to make money off everyone. It's a company for fucks sake. And a company founded in the freedom of the good ol' US of A. We believe everyone has a right to advertise and Facebook isn't about to restrict advertisers unless they are prohibited by law in the respective country. Want facebook tos top selling to fascists? Have your country change it's laws or start a grass roots movement. But don't be pissed at facebook just because you happen to vehemently and irrationally disagree with Fascism.

And as Krellin points out, not all fascists are Nazis any more than all racists are white.
Draugnar (0 DX)
16 May 13 UTC
"The british union of fasicsts are Nazis."

And obviously the Queen nor Parliament have outlawed their existence. Seems to me your beef is with your government.
Draugnar (0 DX)
16 May 13 UTC
But I guess freedom for all isn't in your vocabulary. Thank God your government is a bitwiser and less bigoted than you. You don't beat your enemy by becoming him.
Octavious (2701 D)
16 May 13 UTC
@ Draug

What are you failing to understand here? It's the British Union of Facists. They were an enemy in WW2 just like Hitler's lot (albeit a rather feeble version of them). They are Nazis.
Fairfax (1915 D)
16 May 13 UTC
Being an ally of Hitler doesn't make them nazis. Italy was his ally too, and they were fascists, not nazis.
Octavious (2701 D)
16 May 13 UTC
No, Draug, you beat them by making sure whoever does business with them knows who they are and the consequences of their actions so they don't do it again. You do not just sit back and ignore them. You hound them at every opportunity and take whatever action you can to keep them down.
Octavious (2701 D)
16 May 13 UTC
@ fairfax

The Italian fascists were as close as made no difference. Still, if it makes you happier the BUF were Nazis because they were National Socialists.
Draugnar (0 DX)
16 May 13 UTC
I agree Oct. But Webdip doesn't do business with them. We don't advertise there. Go write letters to their advertisers. Bitching here is fruitless and pointless.

And no, "may as well have been Nazis" is not the same as being Nazis. The Nazi party is a very specific party. The BUF may follow their tenants and have been foudned by a friend of Hitler, but it is not the Nazi party. That would be like saying every strong and independent woman is part of the feminist movement. I know many strong and independent women who think feminism has done a great disservice to their sex.
Draugnar (0 DX)
16 May 13 UTC
The Nazis were "Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei ". The BUF is not "Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei ". Nazi is very specifically German. The BUF is very specifically British. At best you could call them Naci (NAtional soCIalist - same syllables) or more likely the BUF.
Octavious (2701 D)
16 May 13 UTC
@ Draug

You are wrong. Nazi is not specifically German. Nazi is a British word first used by the British media from the early 30s to refer originally to the facist National Socialists in Germany and then the axis powers and their allies in general. Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei is the name of Hitler's party. Nazis is the derogatory name we called them and their ilk everywhere.
Octavious (2701 D)
16 May 13 UTC
(well... could be wrong about the who used it first lark, but I'm argumantative mood ;) . The germans didn't use it much. The allies did. That'll do )
