Gunboat to introduce new players to site
I introduced several friends to Webdiplomacy, through a full-press game. Several players (five!) indicated they want to play another gunboat game on the side to get the hang of the site. They're reasonably experienced, so we're looking for two reasonable other players to give some staunch opposition.
Who feels like a game?!

Thoughts of Americans about opinions of "foreigners"about Americans?
So, Americans, what do you think of our opinions of you? What do you think we think about you? I'm curious, because I hear rather often how we are all blaming America blablabla while I know no one who actually does that.

Apologies if this info exists elsewhere, but I'm new here and it's easier to ask than to hunt. Are the games full press? (I assume so but none of the posts above specified that.) How long are the phase lengths? Are the players anonymous?

I'm not sure how my stats would be viewed were I to be considered as a player.

I have two resigns, both from my first day here, joining whatever 5 min/phase game was open so I could learn the site controls. If I recall they were both with CD countries with dim prospects that I took over, and were resigned at the end when I was about to die anyway.

I have played six live no press games (one survive, three defeats, two resigns) - but never again. Not only do I enjoy the in-game back and forth messaging, apparently I need it too. I usually want more than five minutes to think about moves, too. But I'm stuck with those on my record forever, I guess.

On the other hand, I have finished three standard phase press games and drawn all three. That's pretty good but it's also a pretty small sample size. I'm playing in four others, two of which are still early, one of which I have a shot at the win and at worst a draw, and the last will probably be a survive, possibly a defeat, with a long shot at a draw.

Playing with a tutor might be interesting, but my press record suggests I may not need it as much as someone else (if indeed these are press games)? What does the brain trust say?

Hazel, this version of SOW is indeed full press. We also have a separate and less frequent gunboat SOW for those interested.

No matter what your record says, everyone could stand to learn to play a bit better. Your record shows you only have nine completed games, so unless you've been playing for twenty years IRL, you are more than eligible for SOW. Keep in mind, though, that you are committing to a full game with up to 2 day phases and an endgame writeup is also encouraged.

Hmm, I'm not really a beginner but I doubt I meet the requirements for a TA either... Are there ever any SoW intermediate/advanced classes?

I see a few more volunteers. Ill post an updated list tonight. I'm about ready to go to work.

The 20% w-l guideline is my preference. It's not binding by any means. If you have a 35% rate, it may mean you get bumped toward the bottom of the list, or maybe have an intermediate game if one can be created. I pretty much consider your full press classic games with emphasis on WTA. I ignore any game that didnt get to at least 1905. My overall goal is to simply get the people together. If we get exactly 7 players and some are clearly stronger than others and have better W-L pcts, then so be it.

I agree with jmo and 2WL that everyone has something they can learn from others and ultimately this is about having fun and helping developers the game for those that feel this is an avenue that can do that.

I also understand that in games past, profs have dropped out. I believe that with the number of qualified volunteers, that won't be the case, and I always see my SoW games to completion. Thanks jmo for the kind words :)

I would love to be a student. Two potential problems would be:
1) my combined win/draw which is 38% although 34% of that is from draws and the main thing I want to focus on is how to solo.
2) I have a few resigns under my belt but they were all from like a year ago and it was because I was playing many games at the same time when my internet went down and I wasn't able to go back on for a while. I might add that if you take a look at some of these games, I was doing quite well and I definitely never resign because of poor positioning.
Please let me know if you would consider me.

Absolutely agreed that everyone can improve, and I am not a veteran player by any stretch, which is why I expressed interest.

Can you count me in as a first alternate or something? I'm willing if I'm not already involved in too many other games at the time (am in four right now, that's my limit - do we have a rough start date for this?) And if it turns out there are more volunteer players than available slots in the game(s), I am fine continuing my course of independent learning.

Is my GR/win-draw percentage too high to be a student? I don't really feel like I'm qualified to be a TA, but it sounds like if I want to participate, that's where I'd fall in.

@Ghug: well take care of ya. I'm sure we will have enough TAs for you to prof.

Now to address a few things:
1) if you're a TA, please post country interest (3 please in order of desire)

2) the start date is relative to the completion of getting volunteers. After volunteers are completed, we will assign countries to the TAs and then the game would be created by the first player under the volunteer order: Atundai in this case.

The game is scripted to be a 48 hour phase WTA classic full press game with a 5 point buy in. Non anonymous and password protected. The game should be set to allow 5 days for players to join. The creator assigns a password and sends it to all other players.

In S01, one prof will create the official thread for commentary by the profs only and it permits other people not taking part in the game to ask questions of the professors. Thus, any person who didn't get into the game can follow it and ask questions. If a prof doesn't publicly answer a question because it might unduly influence the game, the profs can PM the questioner a more thorough response, although such information is to be kept private.

Also in S01, profs are invited to make opening statements.

Players or TAs who have a need should PM me. Such concerns include things like missing players or TAs. NMRs don't warrant the need to roll back phased or otherwise alter the game, although CDs may.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))

I am about to graduate...
Hello WebDip community.
I am about to graduate high school (2 weeks after tomorrow) and I was wondering if anybody here has any general tips or experiences they can share with me and/or anybody who is graduating. I believe many of you on this site have gone through college or high school already, and was just wondering if anybody could ease my nerves about my future.
I am going to be attending University of River Falls - Wisconsin in the USA; I plan on becoming a teacher.

Men's Clothing
I just got my first real job last week and now I'm in a bit of a tight spot. My wardrobe needs to be updated to be semi-professional and done (mostly) on the kind-of cheap. My work environment is not overly formal (no tie or suit) but I still want to look good and purchase good quality and good fitting clothing and would like some recommendations.

Using the vote button in gunboat
Can someone please clarify what the new rules are about using the vote buttons in gunboat? Back in the day communication using these buttons was accepted (eg. "Cancel" = let's stop fighting, "Draw" = let's take out the big guy, "Pause" = Somebody help me, etc.). I know there was some tl;dr about it in the Gunboat Tournament thread but if any mods/admins can clear it up here i'd appreciate it.
