Name some 'regular' activities you enjoy doing on a daily basis.
I'm going through a lifestyle change (which is going well, by the way) and although I haven't been particularly bored so far, that's probably because I'm still 'recovering' from my old lifestyle. Since I'm sort of coincidentally 'cutting down' on things I enjoy with this change as well, I need some replacement and at the same time I'd love to hear what webdippers do to enjoy themselves.

So I starred this thread and I can't unstar it...
I think this is a major problem. There needs to be a way to unstar threads you decide you don't like anymore without muting them.

The Favorite Author Tournament: The Round of 64
So after an, um, interesting first match that became a friendly because 1. Neither Shakespeare nor Vergil should be pitted against top foes in the first round and 2. Stephenie Meyer was an embarrassment and was going to get her butt kicked by Virginia Woolf anyway, we start the Round of 64 in proper here. All the matches will be posted in here, we'll move on every 24 hours, assuming my computer doesn't die (anyone know how to fix "'Documents.library-ms' is no longer working?) Anyway!

I think the scoring record so far for this is 10 by Vergil in the friendly vs. Shakespeare...I think 8 or 9 is the record so far for the actual tournament so far...doesn't look like McCarthy's winning this one, so I wonder if the re-worker of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Beowulf (what, that's what he's most famous for, right?) can top that, the day's young yet...

Nobody gives a shit about Jane Austen and Trudi Caravan (who?). Everyone loves Tolkien.
WardenDresden (239 D(B))

I also vote Tolkien.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
23 Apr 14 UTC
...I again hate to be the person to defend her, since I'm not her biggest fan, but yeah, people do give something of a shit about Austen (never heard of Canavan either.)

And Tolkien...eh...

Again--like his characters and settings and all the work he puts into his books...

When it comes to actually READING his prose, however...

Reading him is like reading Henry James for me--I know it's good, but the style's just not doing it for me, and both authors make their works just FEEL long.

And having a long book and a book that feels long are two different things.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
23 Apr 14 UTC
So yeah...the tl;dr version--

I like Tolkien, I wish he had a bit of a different style and better pacing.

2nd, we're kind of stuck with unfortunate first round matchups unless the authors are Obi's. Then they get their first loss cancelled and get to face J.K. Rowling instead.

Can we just skip ahead to the final?

Shakespeare vs. Tolkien

Shakespeare had a few good plays that were (allegedly) written by him. On the other hand, Tolkien had talking trees.

Tolkien 1
Shakespeare 0

Stop whining
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
23 Apr 14 UTC
YOU suggested the rematch, ghug, I was fine with the Bard losing.

(And let's be honest, Shakes is gonna lose to J.K. on popularity anyway, lol...sad but true.)

Why suggest this alternative if you were going to whine about it?
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
23 Apr 14 UTC
Besides, my favorite poet, T.S. Eliot, already lost.
i'm going to vote for j.k. as a protest vote - j.k. is awful though :P seriously, it did really annoy me, especially seeing some of the candidates who have gone through, but living in western society as long as we all have, we should have realised democracy has flaws :P in the end of the day, if shakespeare lost to virgil, even if he goes on it is likely he will lose at another point. Likewise, given Virgil beat shakespeare i think it is likely he will progress quite far
ghug (5068 D(B))
23 Apr 14 UTC
Because I like to fuck with you, and because my suggestion didn't involve forcing Vergil to undergo the first round again. Shakespeare/Vergil is the only case where a first round matchup was wrong. This one would be fine if better authors had been selected initially.

Anyway, I'll be voting for Rowling, but something is seriously wrong with us if she wins.

Fleet at Poland retreat to Ukraine?
gameID=138998

Okay, how on earth did Quebec's fleet at Poland manage to retreat to Ukraine despite not sharing a coastal border? Is this a bug or an obscure quirk of the World map? The variant homepage says nothing about any Pol-Ukr canal.

As With Crimea, So Too with Eastern Ukraine...
http://news.yahoo.com/rebels-declare-victory-east-ukraine-vote-self-rule-012033097.html "Organizers in the main region holding the makeshift vote on Sunday said nearly 90 percent had voted in favor." Yes...because when I think "legitimate democratic proceedings," the first thing *I* think of is a "makeshift vote"...and nearly 90% in favor, on such a divisive issue? You couldn't get 90% of people to agree what color the sky is! Will the West act NOW? (No. But let's chat, shall we?)

So I've been watching liveleak videos featuring violence and death and then went onto Omegle to talk about it and kept getting "16m u?" and now I'm depressed. Sam Cooke tells me it's been a long time coming but a change is gonna come? I am skeptical.

I've been thinking of modifications to the ghostrating system, is there anywhere with a vast amount of diplomacy game data I can mine to test out the modifications? It doen't need to be from this site but I would prefer if it had data on individual turns and not just win/lose/draw/survive.
