Name some 'regular' activities you enjoy doing on a daily basis.
I'm going through a lifestyle change (which is going well, by the way) and although I haven't been particularly bored so far, that's probably because I'm still 'recovering' from my old lifestyle. Since I'm sort of coincidentally 'cutting down' on things I enjoy with this change as well, I need some replacement and at the same time I'd love to hear what webdippers do to enjoy themselves.

I think this is a major problem. There needs to be a way to unstar threads you decide you don't like anymore without muting them.

The Favorite Author Tournament: The Round of 64
So after an, um, interesting first match that became a friendly because 1. Neither Shakespeare nor Vergil should be pitted against top foes in the first round and 2. Stephenie Meyer was an embarrassment and was going to get her butt kicked by Virginia Woolf anyway, we start the Round of 64 in proper here. All the matches will be posted in here, we'll move on every 24 hours, assuming my computer doesn't die (anyone know how to fix "'Documents.library-ms' is no longer working?) Anyway!

Fleet at Poland retreat to Ukraine?
gameID=138998

Okay, how on earth did Quebec's fleet at Poland manage to retreat to Ukraine despite not sharing a coastal border? Is this a bug or an obscure quirk of the World map? The variant homepage says nothing about any Pol-Ukr canal.

As With Crimea, So Too with Eastern Ukraine...
http://news.yahoo.com/rebels-declare-victory-east-ukraine-vote-self-rule-012033097.html "Organizers in the main region holding the makeshift vote on Sunday said nearly 90 percent had voted in favor." Yes...because when I think "legitimate democratic proceedings," the first thing *I* think of is a "makeshift vote"...and nearly 90% in favor, on such a divisive issue? You couldn't get 90% of people to agree what color the sky is! Will the West act NOW? (No. But let's chat, shall we?)

I'd like to point out something--

Putinist Russia's responsible now for continued instability in Syria--by blocking UN Security Council efforts--and the unrest in Crimea and Eastern Ukraine.

Now, whether he legitimately wanted to engage in military action, or just wanted to protect his ego, President Obama WAS ready to take on Syria...but the GOP-led Congress stonewalled him on that.

He wanted action on Crimea--was met with a tepid response by EU allies who are more concerned about their oil and gas prices then they are the liberties of Eastern Europe or Putin's getting the band back together "Back in USSR" (a long way for a Beatles reference, but still.)

So...my question is--

WHEN will the West act, more than if it will act?

Would a GOP-led Congress authorize strong action against Russia in an election year...

...or simply punt on that issue, and then we get to endure two years of FOX News complaining Obama's been a softy when he's one thus far who's called for action of any kind in any of the theatres of instability Putin's created?

And abroad--

is the EU going to do...anything?

Sorry, I guess that's an unfair question--we all know the answer is no. :p

So, better question--will any members of the EU "screw their courage to the sticking place" and face this down before we get Cold War II, or are they so "full of the milk of human kindness" that we're just going to keep appeasing "pro-Russian forces?"

(Yes, "Macbeth" quotes...but given the amount of political backstabbing and dirty hands here...oh well.)

I look forward to the inevitable profanity-laden, "libtard"-blaming response from my dear colleague krellin...

...and continue to wonder where oh WHERE our dear friend Putin33 has gotten to...
I thought the referendum hadn't taken place yet?

Oh, and did you catch the gem of news where Ukrainian forces intercepted 100,000 pre-marked "yes" ballots?

Putin33 should be just loving the Crimean crisis.

goldfinger:

Could 100,000 ballots fit into that car with 3 guys and still be driveable?

A 500-sheet ream of 20-pound bond paper weighs 5 pounds.

http://home.howstuffworks.com/question329.htm

Assumption: 2 ballots per sheet of paper

100,000 ballots = 50,000 sheets =

100 reams = 2,000 lbs

Dimensions of 1 ream = 8.5 x 11 x 2

100 reams = 8.5 x 11 x 200 =

18,700 cu in = 10.8 cu ft

According to Kiev, the 40 or so Russian separatist burned themselves to death in Odessa. Videos of pro-Kiev protesters preparing and throwing Molotov cocktails at the building, shooting at the building, at beating the crap out of people who jumped from the building obviously should be written off. Warmongering Russians have to be stopped.

Fake as a three dollar bill of course since they announced the outcome before the vote
Lol? Really?

@Obi: funny how Obama seems so powerless to do anything. If only he had a more powerful position.

But yeah, granted, the European heads of state really got what they wanted when they voted in the powerless trio Barosso / Ashton / Van Rompuy: the most spineless EU since ... well, ever.

100 reams is only 500 pounds. You said yourself that a ream was 5 pounds.
Draugnar (0 DX)
12 May 14 UTC
And 1000 reams would fit in the trunk with ease. 2x5x1.1 feet. I could put that in the back of my old Fiat Spider.
Barn3tt (41969 D)
12 May 14 UTC
You're right, Draugnar. I saw this in a comment section elsewhere and it made sense.
But, double checking the math, it's off.

I don't think Putin will be able to use this poll. Everyone important, despite calling the Crimea vote illegal, more or less agreed the result was about right. This latest vote is a different matter entirely. Putin can't use it to take over as its just too dodgy.

If, on the other hand, the rabble in Kiev claiming to be a government launch a major crack down because of it... Putin may well be able to use that. But I don't think Kiev is that stupid.
Kingdroid (219 D)

IIRC correctly the Crimea referendum had 18% turnout. or something ridiculously low like that.

Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))

Octavious, Russia doesn't need to use the poll to annex Donetsk, it just needs to use the poll results to cause further havoc and destabilize the government in Kiev. It's reached its goal if the pro-western leaders in Ukraine can no longer govern the nation.

The quiet train to depression-ville
So I've been watching liveleak videos featuring violence and death and then went onto Omegle to talk about it and kept getting "16m u?" and now I'm depressed. Sam Cooke tells me it's been a long time coming but a change is gonna come? I am skeptical.

Statistics
I've been thinking of modifications to the ghostrating system, is there anywhere with a vast amount of diplomacy game data I can mine to test out the modifications? It doen't need to be from this site but I would prefer if it had data on individual turns and not just win/lose/draw/survive.
