I missed a turn because of the server error.
Hi, This morning I could not log in.
"Apologies for the downtime, the server ran out of disk space. Our new disk will be configured this weekend. All games have been given extra time to compensate. Thanks for your patience."

As the result, one of my game missed a turn. Everyone else moved excepted me. What do I do now?

WebDip vs VDip
Not sure if this has already been posted here, but Gen Lee suggested a tournament between the best players here and the best players on VDip, including Classic games and variant games to give both factions some home ground to fight on.
Any of you up for it? We've already got a small team together and hopefully some of the other top VDip players will volunteer soon.

The Future of Tournaments webDip
As webDip grows, we need to relook at some of our old policies. The Mods have decided that it's time we rethink how Tournaments are done. I'm currently sitting in while most of the Mods are away, so I figured I'd get the community's input now, for them to consider when they get back.

V Web diplomacy ego's
When the site went down last night i signed up to the v web diplomacy site and checked the forum and one thread suggests that the players in the top forty are better than the top 400 here. What a bunch of tosh they are really up on themselves :(

While I remain impartial and refuse to make any claims about which site has better players, I think that this can easily be resolved if we get the top players of VDip against the top players of webDip as has been suggested similarly in the forum.

Fair comment :)

though if a tournament was to happen would you play for web diplomacy or V web diplomacy halt??
Halt (270 D)
12 Apr 13 UTC
I've already volunteered to play for VDip. Mostly because I don't think it would be fair for me to qualify playing for webdip (being only in the top 15 percent, or 1500+/8000 players). While in VDip, I'm in the HoF "top 100" apparently. Still haven't figured out how the system reached that conclusion...

Fair enough buddy. I enjoying the challenge of the 2 varient games i am in but i think i will always prefer this site.
Danny - seeing that I said that comment, you misread it.

"If it get scaled too big, it won't be competitive - simply because of the size of the top tier of players on WebDip. I would say the top 400 all-time on WebDip are comparable to the top 40 here." is what you said and maybe i misread it and hope i did but it appeared to my eyes that the claim was made

just went to this website

In order for this site to work properly we need to store small files (called cookies) on your computer. Over 90% of all websites do this, however, since the 25th of May 2011 we are required by EU regulations to obtain your consent first

this is a load of crap. the eu cookie law does not apply when cookies that are just used in order for a site to function. so they are kind of violating the law already by claiming they are only using it for the proper functioning of the site yet still demanding consent.

Hey Gold finger i think maybe you have missed your calling as a politician. Thinking your head was above the parapet the new post on vweb is interesting nice political dont offend anyone answer lol :)
Halt (270 D)
12 Apr 13 UTC
I think what he meant by his comment was pointed at the larger population of webdip. That is to say, while VDip might be able to gather 40 top players, the number of players who have the same or greater skill on webdip would be 400.

Therefore, if you brought in larger numbers, vdip would have a harder time fielding players of equal caliber, resulting in less participants from our side, and thus, more chances for webdip wins.

Although goldfinger could have phrased it better since its a bit misleading and had me confused for a few minutes trying to figure out what he meant.
dannysparkes (397 D)
12 Apr 13 UTC
Oh ok if thats the case then you have my gratitude Halt and my apologies Goldfinger for misunderstanding you.
BreathOfVega (597 D)
12 Apr 13 UTC
It seems to me that you are misinterpreting Goldfinger's quote on purpose.

Considering "top level players", 400 can be found in this site rankings while about a tenth plays / played there. That's what I read...

They aren't game points, but I don't know how they are calculated either.

huh

Well I know gantz is a pretty decent player, so we can use that as a basis of comparison.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))

The biggest difference is that here, everyone knows one, maybe two maps. Classic and then another. They're experts on classic. On Vdip, we play a lot of new and different maps... I think in classic WebDip would win, but vDip would win the variants.

RE: The VDip HOF rating system

That rating system was create by Oli (the owner and developer of WebDip). It's based on the Elo system, but uses an interesting heuristic to generalize it to n-player Diplomacy games (where n > 2).

There is a long forum discussion on VDip regarding the design of that system. He asked for input from the community and many people contributed to the discussion. More details can be found in that thread, the VDip wiki, and the code available on Github.

The players over there are better and take the game more seriously. The top 40 over there is miles ahead of the top 40 here and they don't have the same annoying egos.
Yonni (136 D(S))
12 Apr 13 UTC
So why do you play here? Just for the live games?
My opinion is that the classic map is the best far and away. I like playing classic map games more than variants and there are real no classic games over there. At least not many. There is also a larger player base here. I often cannot get games started on vdip.
Fasces349 (0 DX)

judging on the number of people currently in games, the webdip site is only, at present, 3.6 times as large as vdip. So webdip isn't as large, compared to vdip, as people think.

Of course that 3.6 number is excluded the live on players from the count, a nonexistent profession over at vdip.
captainmeme (1723 DMod)
12 Apr 13 UTC
The non-mathy explanation is that it takes into account the ratings of the opponents that you beat, similar to GR (although I'm not certain how that works).
Fasces349 (0 DX)
12 Apr 13 UTC
The highest ranked player who appears on both lists is Gantz.

Gantz is #17 in the current webdip ranking (GR), and #5 in the current vdip ranking (HOF). So that would suggest the top 4 players at vdip are like the top 16 here.

Which isn't that surprising, this site has approx 4 times as many players, so the # of elite players on this site should outnumber the # of elite players on vdip by about the same margin.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
12 Apr 13 UTC
that's probably a pretty good comparison Fasces, a question about your ranking system though. Do people fall off the list after a given amount of time? And were you checking the all time GhostRating or the Monthly one?

Creating an EOG periodical
I got the thought that it may be nice to create a collection of some of the sites best EOGs. I figure that people could point me in the direction of some of their favourites. I could give them a quick edit (to conform their styles at least) and then release them periodically as a collection. Ultimately, it would be cool to have them stored on a navigatable website. This is just a thought though so all action, of course, is pension my laziness.

The non-variant series...
I am thinking of starting a new series (passworded) wherein the buy-in is irrelavent because the points at the end of the game go back to the original polayers and the winner/drawees get nothing extra. This would eliminate the PPSC vs. WTA arguments and their issues as it wouldn't matter (although it would still affect GR, nothing I can do about that).

Anyone up for trying this out?

So who's interested in a public press live game on google plus? (obviously it'd be gunboat on the site, because all communication would be done over video chat). We could broadcast the game so observers could see the conversation in real time.

I'm thinking 10 minutes per turn, Sunday afternoon at around 2PM PST.
How does that sound?
