The Great Debate: Mujus, Crazy Anglican, Nigee, semck, SC vs. My Fellow Atheists?
It seems as if we have a new wave of vocal and talented Christian thinkers, who certainly seem as willing as I to type on the matter, albeit from the other end--so, care to debate, say, 2-4 Christians vs. the same # of Atheists, on a thread w/ a neutral moderator, we each give an opening statement in succession (say, 500-1000 words or less), one rebuttal per person, and then open it up for questions, side with the most +1s for their comments "wins?"

Sexist Pig, Re-Heated Family Guy Leftovers, or Fresh New Take--McFarlane as Oscars Host?
http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/closeread/2013/02/seth-macfarlane-and-the-oscars-hostile-ugly-sexist-night.html So the reviews for the Aesthete Super Bowl known as the Oscars are in...and pretty much it's an even split, some loving the job Seth McFarlane did and others, like Ms. Davidson here, finding his turn as Oscar host incredibly offensive...and "misogynistic" seems to be the chief complaint against him--agree with that, disagree...your take?

Potential Multi Issue
I'm new to website after playing a few IRL games, and my housemate who also works at the same place as me is probably thinking about joining. However, I know there are issues relating to people using multiple accounts, and if that's done by IP address is will most likely look like both our accounts are the same person's.
What's the best way for us to avoid this, or who should I contact to discuss it further?
Thanks!

For the easy payment of 15 D, you can enjoy the chance to rule the world with The World Wide Schlieffen Plan ( http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=111246 ) . If you can take 10 minutes out of you day for possible world domination, than this deal is for you. In fact this deal is just to good. I'm gonna have to put a time limit of 7 days for this. I would wait that long though. there's only 13 spaces left.

Michelle Obama presents Best Picture Award
Cult of personality much? Can the Obamas refrain from inserting themselves into every damn corner of American life? Who thought this was a good idea--among both the White House staff and the Oscars producers? Can we leave politics out of anything? Why were military personnel used as props in a banal entertainment industry awards program?

Seriously, how is this not creepy and inappropriate?

In other news, Lincoln *and* Les Miserables got absolutely screwed out of Best Picture.

Argo? Really? REALLY?!? It was a decent movie, okay, I'll admit that but it didn't deserve Best Picture. The Academy is such bullshit these days.

Argo was a first-rate thriller but it had no character development/dynamic characters, a predictable resolution, no allegorical relevence, and basically no remarkable presence of any elements of good storytelling.

Just a wee bit of paranoia, eh? Did Michelle do anything political? I think she is just a popular cultural figure in America right now and a lot of people probably got a kick out of her presenting. It *is* supposed to be entertaining...and she was probably a hell of a lot more entertaining than that half-wit whats-her-face from Twilight. (WORST actress ever....)

dipplayer2004 (1110 D)
25 Feb 13 UTC
I have to agree with that about Kristen Stewart.
It's not paranoia to find it rather disgusting the way our President and First Lady want to act like celebrities. I guess they do say that DC is like Hollywood for ugly people.

Yeah, I think Dipplayer's a little wacko here.

That said, he might be right for the wrong reason. For a president who is often criticized for being a little too cozy with the Hollywood elite, I'm not sure having his wife show up at the Oscars creates a beneficial brand.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

I really don't understand the Kristen Stewart hate. It's hard to act well with such a bad script, but I don't blame her for taking the cash-cow deal it was.
dipplayer2004 (1110 D)
25 Feb 13 UTC
So it's just bad image control, hecks? He's not really out-of-touch and shallow? And we shouldn't be bothered by such displays of arrogance by the President and his wife?
dipplayer2004 (1110 D)

Stewart was awful in that Snow White movie as well. It wasn't just that Twilight was horrible material.

Once upon a time, we believed in simple republican (small "r") virtues. Politicians were necessary evils, who were given a little bit of power so they could administer the government for us. They weren't idols, celebrities, or messiah-figures. This is a fault on both sides--see the Reagan and Ron Paul worship that is on the right.
hecks (164 D)

I don't find it disturbing in any way. I remember Bush senior showing up on SNL, I remember Nixon on Laugh-in, I remember Bush, Jr. throwing out the first pitch at the World Series. First families are public figures. They show up in public. I don't see it as them inserting themselves into anything.

"I really don't understand the Kristen Stewart hate. It's hard to act well ..."

I have never seen her act well, period. I've never seen her interview well. She didn't read well last night. She has zero-emotional projection and zero voice control...I think she might be a zombie.
krellin (80 DX)

"Politicians were necessary evils,..."

Michelle is not a politician. She is a wife of a politician, and entitled to her life.
dipplayer2004 (1110 D)
25 Feb 13 UTC
Nixon and Bush were not sitting Presidents at the time, and throwing out the first pitch has a long history--that's Baseball, once virtually the American state religion! It bothers me when Presidents go on Leno or Letterman. I guess I am old-fashioned.
dipplayer2004 (1110 D)
25 Feb 13 UTC
The First Lady is supposed to be a figure of dignity. But, again, I am old-fashioned. I still believe Congress should pass a budget and that a declaration of war is needed to fight one.
2ndWhiteLine (2601 D(B))

"They weren't idols, celebrities, or messiah-figures."

Presidents have always been idols and celebrities. You're delusional if you don't think people didn't give George Washington the celebrity treatment. They're the most prominent individuals in the country and (literally) every person, old and young, knows who they are, what they look like, and what they stand for.

And how is Michelle Obama reading the name of a highly prestigious award (whether you like it or not, it is...) - one of the most coveted awards in any calendar year, in fact - how is her reading off that name not dignified? As opposed to Barrack Obama in his lady-jeans tossing an opening pitch in to the dirt?

Anyway - Reagan was the last dignified President - always saw him in suit and tie and commanded respect. Not a single president of either party since has upheld the old-school standard, and with each passing PIC (Putz-in-Chief) they get less dignified, less professional, less talented and more destructive to the country and world...

" I still believe Congress should pass a budget and that a declaration of war is needed to fight one."

I'm with you on those two points. But I guess I just don't see the Oscars as sacrosanct. It's a whole event dedicated to people shilling themselves out for PR. What does it matter to me if politicians insert themselves to get a piece of the action?

@2WL - "most prominent individuals in the country and (literally) every person, old and young, knows who they are" - Really? So that baby born last Sunday knows who the PResident is already? WOW! I'm astonished! Even the one born during last night's Oscar Ceremony knows! Damg! That's one heluva press corps!

Pet peeve: Using literally when there is nothing literal about the statement being made.

@abge - I hope I wasn't vitriolic about Kristen Stewart. I don't hare her...I just think she's not the sharpest tack in the box - but kudos to her for making a hell of a lot of money on minimal talent. I'd be more vitriolic were I to comment on a society that lavishes attention on such a lack of talent.
