Somehow the English do not talk the entire game and French and him are allies? No talking to any other player for 2 hours? But somehow has this great relatinship with France. France tells me he will talk to England to discuss a 3 way draw. Yeah right He's playing both countries.

Does anybody recognise the film this comes from?
I saw this in a film long ago and, being the father of daughters, decided to remember it, but I can't remember which film it's from. Does anybody recognise it?

Scene:Man meeting daughter's new boyfriend for the first time:-
"Remember this: I own a shotgun and a shovel and there's 300 acres of woodland behind the house... soft, loamy, soil... rich, earthy, smells..."

What to do when detecting cheater in anonymous/no ingame message games?
I just want to know how to handle if 2 team players join a anonymous/no-ingame message game.

Is there any way to prevent people doing such stupid things or are there any consequences for them?

Whoever is Germany in "A Fish Called Walrus"
You need to click the "Ready" button, not just the "Save" button for the game to progress. You are slowing up the whole game unnecessarily.

Any statistical wizards here?
I've always been poor at methods. I'm trying to analyze a pooled time series of various countries to see the effects of war/militarized disputes on state strength (as measured by taxation, institutional 'coherence', military spending, military personnel and some other factors). Any clue as to how to do to do a panel-corrected standard error procedure on a program like R or Stata?

Variant Elimination Game
Each round, add one point to your favorite variant, and subtract one from your least favorite. When a variant runs out of points, it's eliminated. When you post, put a (+1) and a (-1) next to the ones you change, so it's easier to follow.

New Map?
Hey, does anyone think that a new map at the time of the colonising of the Americas (or just North America) would be a good idea?

The countries would be:
Spain
France
England
The Netherlands
Native Americans (or 2 native American)
and possibly Russia coming in from Alaska

Include S. America you could have Portugal involved too.
The Tzar (0 DX)

South america was a consideration, but then spain and port would have alot more places to conquor, but if they don't have SCs it doesn't matter
The Native Americans wouldn't realistically be able to compete. It might make more sense to have Native territories be the supply centers and extra spaces, kinda like how the smaller European countries were such on the standard map.
Catch23 (0 DX)
06 Feb 11 UTC
well it was just an idea to add more players per map
It would also be hard to place NAs on a map. If you gave Russia the Pacific NW (not realistic, because Britain owned it), France the Great Lakes/eastern midwest, Spain Florida/deep South, and England in New England, that doesn't leave a lot of strategically desireable positions for a hypothetical NA "country"

Just my two cents.

Russia owned Alaska untill the 1900's when they sold it to the US

yeah well the ottoman empire couldnt realistically compete either

i think you could throw in the iroquois and the apaches or something. it would be legit.

plains indians could be at the center.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

also TMW the Russians had a fort as far south as san francisco
Yeah TMW, the Russians were in the NW in the early 18th century. And the Ottomans could compete enough that they held their own at Gallipoli. If you count the Ottomans out, you might as well count the Austrians out, because they didn't do much of anything.

God, I wouldn't want to be in the centre of a North America map - you'd be slaughtered.
@ Thuc --

Sorry. My pre-20th Century North American history is a little fuzzy.

But figlesquidge is right. Whoever is in the middle is toast from the start.

Rule 1: Spain starts the game occupying 17 of America's 34 SC's. Portugal starts with 1, France starts with 1, Great Britain starts with 1, the Netherlands start with 1 and Sweden starts with 1. Like in the original game, there are 12 neutral supply centers. Also like in the original game, the first player to occupy 18 supply centers is declared the winner. . . .
Catch23 (0 DX)
07 Feb 11 UTC
iroquois and the apaches sioux are optional, sioux would get killed though so the middle might just be nuetral. every1 would start with 3, spain with 5. maby lots of SC's.
1) No ottomans
2) No Nations in the middle
3) Inca in South America (so that spain and Portugal don't have it to themselves)
4) Spain's starting SC's would be kinda spread out (makes it harder)
Catch23 (0 DX)
07 Feb 11 UTC
or just have North America
@ Catch 23

If you did one of North and South America, you might as well just cut up the World Diplomacy map.
Catch23 (0 DX)
07 Feb 11 UTC
if it had a lot of players though, it would be bigger, with more trerritories
Alderian (2425 D(S))

You could also just use the Fall of the American Empire map linked above, but change to using only Native American tribes as the players fighting over the continent.

Perhaps with a back story of a horrible plague sending Europe back to the dark ages, allowing the American tribes time to progress and develop technology that would lead to wanting to control the rest of the lands.

or just have the Black Death do alot more damage. Or Christopher Colombus was denied by the Queen of Spain
I didn't think of that. But how would NAs have navies/fleets?
Catch23 (0 DX)
08 Feb 11 UTC
have them get advanced, or just canoes (idk how to spell it)
Yeah, this is definitely something that could work. It might be worth it to try to put something together.
Catch23 (0 DX)

IDK how to
i studied early american history if it might help, youd prob want spain to start with an advantage, 4 huge territories sorta like russia, England with VA Mass Jamaica, Ned with NY, curacau, and antgua, France withupper canada lower canada and haiti, The map, portugal with brazil and peru. Would lead to an interesting situation in the caribbean, as well as a situation where players initially try to stave off spain ALA rel life. probaby shouldnt include the west coast for best game play
Catch23 (0 DX)
09 Feb 11 UTC
yeah. that's how it worked
woofers (100 D)
09 Feb 11 UTC
yes I would agree with not including the west coast

@Santa, I like your idea ;)
Catch23 (0 DX)
09 Feb 11 UTC
santa's ideas are based on history, which i think The Tzar was going for
well sorta history, Netherlands never really had any military power in the new world so to speak, but this is a war game after all

So, Alderian built a beautiful diplomacy map in minecraft. The colors aren't fully working on this map, but trust me, they're there.

What are you reading at the moment?
I just finished reading "Why the west rules for now" by Ian Morris. And now (continuing with the theme of historical determinism) I am about to start "The next 100 years" by George Freeman. He predicts Poland, Turkey and Japan will become super-powers (and maybe Mexico also).

Can a mod please check the webdipmod email?
I have sent a multi accusation there that needs swift action. The cheating is so obvious by the players' names, but the turn runs soon and I don't want the game destroyed by a cheat. I'm doing too well in it.

Does power make one corrupt, or just bring out the "evil" already found within.
I'm specifically thinking of people like Hsoni Mubarak.
