hmm well to start out i think it has objectified women as a picture in many cases, instead of an actual person. I think it may have made women more conciencious(spelling) about there looks because they have to "compete" with the porn and model women.

Might I ask why only the past 50 years?

Agreed with the need to compete with the women in porn films, although this seems to affect men far more than it does women!! Women seem to be able to differentiate between the things women do in porn films and reality far more easily than men.

That said i also think there has been a massive increase in the porn industry aimed at women themselves as well as men - because of this i definately feel its becoming a safer industry and one appreciated by all sexes.

Well yeah 50's porn was mostly just pictures not films, at least not of any massively grtaphic nature. Porns been around for cdenturies but just not to this extent and definately not this accessable.

The internet didn't exist, I know dvds didn't exist, and I assume vhs didn't exist either? I've never known anything older than a vhs, so somebody with a little more lifetime than me will have to clarify that.

I'd say its become much more popular because the accessibility has increased tremendously, I'd argue that since the invention of the internet porn has grown exponentially, as it can be accessed by anybody, which makes the actresses able to market themselves much easier.

Akilies - i mean more about expectations! Men expect women to be able to act more like the women in porn films and at the same time feel apprehensive because they cannot perform possibly in the same way as the men in porn films. Yet the women i know feel neither the need to outperform porn stars nor expect their men to perform as such.

I'm so glad that porn is starting to become a market where women themselves can start to market themselves and create their own careers etc, obviously there are still so many underhanded and violent pornography trade people out there. But there is also an increasing number of safe companys who treat their employers well.

Biddis, it seems like you're comparing porn to any other sport or professional competition that people watch for entertainment, and that it's real effect is that it warps your view of what the real thing is like. Similar to a recreational athlete watching Tiger Woods win a golf tournament and then they get the idea that they can play golf at that level as well.

Yeah totally! do you not agree? It is in lots of ways recreational sport - enjoyed by many and definately a way to keep fit! I think it achieves this in a different way as tennis or suchlike as when you watch tennis or another sport you so accept that these are the best, the champions at this sport. Whereas with porn, are all porn stars really the best/ the champions at sex?? or could you meet the unknown, unacknowledge champion of sex whilst walking down the street tomorow?

Also - most other sports are not faked, acted or embelished to create the warped ideas of the sport.

I never really thought of it in that way, but it is true. Champion of sex could vary depending on who is judging, so in that respect it is different from other sports in that the world's best tennis player is the one who will win the most majors and beat everybody else, but what people want out of sex varies from person to person, making a true "champion" impossible in my mind. However, people who make a living by having sex, have to be pretty damn good at it.

Hmm neccessarily - a women who lies down and takes it would not be considered very good at all to most peoples standards, yet it is a requirement for a large amount of porn stars, to take whatever is put on them but make not addepts at initiating anything themselves.

also with professional athletes and the champions of sports, the fans often times want to be like them or strive to be good at the things that they do. some may even place themselves in a scenario where they play as this champion. this can be most likely be seen in people who watch porn, they see these professional pornstars and they see what they do and view it as something like tiger woods winning the us open or something.
