Irony
I am American (Minnesota), born and bred. A while ago I had a college professor (he was from Scotland) tell the class that he was going to skip the section on Irony in our Introduction to Shakespeare class because every American has a "pure and internal understanding of the word" and there was nothing he could teach us about it that we didn't already truly understand.

The Case For Splitting The Forum
A formal petition in favor of splitting the Forum into two separate Forums, one phpDiplomacy-related, the other not. If you agree to this, simply type your username, thus endorsing this action. If not, please do not post and argue on another thread.

I'd rather see a petition for just turning this into a normal forum like what every other forum I've ever used is like.
Xapi (194 D)
18 May 09 UTC
Then the post should be called "A Petition to (...)", not "The case for (...)"

If you're arguing the case, then it should be up for debate, I think.
Invictus (240 D)

I see no need to split the forum, and easily see this becoming another nasty thread.
This isn't a democracy. So unless you are planning to pay for it or code it, a petition is quite pointless.

The developers have already stated that the difficulties of integrating a regular forum mean that it's a very low priority for them. It's an open-source project, so if you want to do it, go ahead.

I actually really dislike this forum's structure, although I enjoy it's content. but I don't have the time to fix it, so I deal.

I _am_ hoping for Private Messages and maybe pagination in the next version.

http://forum.phpdiplomacy.net - and its only for dev work and suggestions.

I love this forum, but would like a few changes. Some of these, such as pagination and private messages, are already in the next release. I believe i fit Dingle's comment in that I'm quite happy and capably to code them, although being a student can't afford to pay for it, so other features I would like are:
-> Multiple sections. Each one should still be like this, but it would be nice to keep some threads separate. Another idea I had was merely filters - when you make a thread you could set it's category, then people viewing the page can show/hide categories. Whilst this wouldn't sit well with how Kestas is doing pagination, it would with a client-side method (load an xml file over ajax then work out where the 'folds' go)
-> Easier loading through AJAX. When you open a thread at the moment it reloads the entire page - i'd just just to load that thread, which would make things faster and neater.
-> Some ways of distinguishing members. Most notably I'd like people to get a little icon at the end of their name to say if they'd donated. People deserve some respect for helping, and it would encourage others to!
-> Sticky/Delete/Locking - In keeping with the site's style these should be very sparingly used, but I do think a forum of this size should have them

Centurian, there's already been a proposal for a split into rubbish and non-rubbish forums. Please do not waste everyone's time by restating existing ideas.

Isn't Centurian's idea the same as Diplomat's?
P.Ginsberg (125 D)

The split would be a bad idea.

Okay, debating:

I feel guilty about clogging up the Forum with non-Diplomacy threads, but not guilty enough to stop sharing my thoughts. I would love to split it because often my benign threads (like this one) are disrespected and trashed because people look at the creator of the thread and immediately assume that this thread is another "That's it, Sicarius!", "Liberals", or "EdiBirsan"

Splitting the Forum would allow me (and all users) to draw the line between Diplomacy and non-Diplomacy. It would unclog the Diplomacy Forum so the mods don't have to dig through garbage just to look for a request for help or a suggestion.

@ DJ:
Petitions hardly ever work in a democracy. Hopefully the mods have been considering forum splitting and this will push them over the edge.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

But it is not up to the moderators who keep the wheels spinning on this website. It is up to the developers who design new shinier faster wheels for this website. And the developers have to prioritize and find time for each new shiny wheel while getting on with their real lives.
"people look at the creator of the thread and immediately assume that this thread is another "That's it, Sicarius!", "Liberals", or "EdiBirsan""

I don't think that's what we think. I think you should shoot lower. Way lower.

omg. i remember "That's it, Sicarius!" I think that was the most epic thread ever on this forum. Hehe.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
19 May 09 UTC
also, i dont understand the big deal about splitting it... cant you sort through them on your own?
I too would like to see an "Off Topic" forum added. But please please please don't use the same software as that used for the forum on the facebook version of phpDiplomacy. It sucks, big-time.

Remarkably, Diplomat is being quite polite and reasonable on this thread.

I agree with his idea. Given the amount of space taken up by non game-related threads, a seperate place for them would be a good idea. Perhaps people are right that the developers would not have time to add this feature right now, but that doesn't mean Diplomat was wrong to suggest it. I will hereby add my name to the 'petition' in the format Diplomat requested when starting this thread:

I think after the upcoming release the forum (and variant support) will be the two biggest todos on the list, but it is a real problem.

On one side there is a real need for some improvement, this forum system is a couple of hundred lines of code while modern forum systems are many thousands of lines, we're missing a lot of useful functionality.

On the other side it just isn't possible for me to write thousands of lines of code to recreate a modern forum system specifically for phpDiplomacy, which leaves only the option of integrating a separate system.
The problem with this only option is that there are no obvious candidates; it has to fit into our site snugly and not feel separate, but also has to be fully-featured enough to be worth the effort. There just aren't any clear choices :-(

Separate forum systems are so difficult to integrate with that I'm even considering making phpDiplomacy a Drupal module, i.e. integrating phpDiplomacy into a separate framework, rather than trying to integrate a forum into phpDiplomacy
jbalcorn (429 D)

That's not a bad idea, actually.
