Inheritance: Interesting case
Since we have had a number of debates here in the past about inheritance and the law, I thought some of you would be interested in this case from the UK:

Off to Join the Navy
Well folks, three weeks from today, I leave to join the NROTC unit at the University of Notre Dame. I expect that will severely limit my Diplomacy playing time. Thanks for all the fun. I'll be back.

Get CPO Sharkey starring Don Rickles to see what life will be like during training. I've had a few friends and my father join the navy that have told me many a tale about why they wish they hadn't.
Good luck!

Good luck.
Upon coming back, you will find a very rich man cheered to by a crowd of limited people explaining to you why you're not a hero.
You can safely ignore him and move on with your life.

He's not a hero yet, for all we know KC could go postal, murder a bunch of babies, and get a purple heart when one bites him.

though personally, i don't think he'd be foolish enough to let a baby get close enough to bite him...

The navy.... in Paris? What are you doing guarding?

"Guards, garbed in blood-red livery, surround
Their palaces, participate the crimes
That force defends and from a nation's rage
Secures the crown, which all the curses reach
That famine, frenzy, woe and penury breathe.
These are the hired bravos who defend
The tyrant's throne -- the bullies of his fear;
These are the sinks and channels of worst vice,
The refuse of society, the dregs
Of all that is most vile; their cold hearts blend
Deceit with sternness, ignorance with pride,
All that is mean and villainous with rage
Which hopelessness of good and self-contempt
Alone might kindle; they are decked in wealth,
Honor and power, then are sent abroad
To do their work. The pestilence that stalks
In gloomy triumph through some eastern land
Is less destroying. They cajole with gold
And promises of fame the thoughtless youth
Already crushed with servitude; he knows
His wretchedness too late, and cherishes
Repentance for his ruin, when his doom
Is sealed in gold and blood!"

-Shelley

Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,

The quote above represents my beliefs. As someone who came about 24 hours away from walking into an army recruiters' at age 18 due to possible financial trouble, but narrowly averted it, I feel I should warn him to look longer and harder than he perhaps has, and consider the magnitude of what he is about to do to himself as a man. I won't be silent about that when someone I know mentions it in public. Why would I? Fuck off bo sox

"Must the citizen ever for a moment, or in the least degree, resign his conscience to the legislator? Why has every man a conscience, then? I think that we should be men first, and subjects afterward. It is not desirable to cultivate a respect for the law, so much as for the right. The only obligation which I have a right to assume is to do at any time what I think right. It is truly enough said that a corporation has no conscience; but a corporation of conscientious men is a corporation with a conscience. Law never made men a whit more just; and, by means of their respect for it, even the well-disposed are daily made the agents of injustice. A common and natural result of an undue respect for law is, that you may see a file of soldiers, colonel, captain, corporal, privates, powder-monkeys,and all, marching in admirable order over hill and dale to the wars, against their wills, ay, against their common sense and consciences, which makes it very steep marching indeed, and produces a palpitation of the heart. They have no doubt that it is a damnable business in which they are concerned; they are all peaceably inclined. Now, what are they? Men at all? or small movable forts and magazines, at the service of some unscrupulous man in power? Visit the Navy Yard, and behold a marine, such a man as an American government can make, or such as it can make a man with its black arts — a mere shadow and reminiscence of humanity, a man laid out alive and standing, and already, as one may say, buried under arms with funeral accompaniments, though it may be

"Not a drum was heard, not a funeral note,
As his corse to the rampart we hurried;
Not a soldier discharged his farewell shot
O'er the grave where our hero we buried."

The mass of men serve the state thus, not as men mainly, but as machines, with their bodies. They are the standing army, and the militia, jailers, constables, posse comitatus, etc. In most cases there is no free exercise whatever of the judgment or of the moral sense; but they put themselves on a level with wood and earth and stones; and wooden men can perhaps be manufactured that will serve the purpose as well."

You were talking nonsense, Thucy. You were pretending that the reason you nearly joined the army was purely financial. Dishonesty doesn't suit you.

Lol, elaborate? Care to tell the forum the details of my personal life to which you're apparently privy? My parents were threatening to cut me off if I didn't go to a Christian college. I was prepared to refuse, and saw the army as a way out. They realized I wasn't bluffing and backed down, and I went to a public college with loans. That's the story. What's your version?
Octavious (2701 D)
27 Jul 15 UTC
No it isn't. The important part is why you saw the army as a preferable way out to the near infinite other options available.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
27 Jul 15 UTC
In the US, at least back in 2009, the military was offering recruits a full ride at any university, to be attended after I think five years of service. I would be just now coming off of that service if that is what I had done. As to why I considered it at all - newsflash - I don't have the same beliefs today as what I had as a high schooler in 2009. Crucify me.

taking over CD positions
When I first started here, I made the mistake of taking over CD countries in existing games. That's pretty hard to win at, especially when new to the game. And I learned taking over CD positions was fruitless and thankless.

My question is, now that Reliability Ratings are up and running, does taking over CD countries do anything to improve RR?

Every car keeps track of the amount of km or miles driven..
With regards to the engine for instance, wouldn't it make more sense to track the amount of rounds (not per minute, but total)? And perhaps the average rpm? Or is rpm not the key factor in ruining your engine?
