I'm writing a magazine feature on Diplomacy
... and other political boardgames, actually. Can anyone suggest any others? Offer any wise words about which are best, why some work better than others, etc? Any help/comments much appreciated...
(It's for a British magazine called Total Politics)

What is your typical Diplomacy player?
So I was wondering, is there any major trends in what kind of people play Diplomacy?
I'm off the Assumption that the vast majority are guys, relatively Nerdy, but in a vast range of ages. I could be massively wrong but that's what I've always thought when considering the player base.
Are there any previous threads or data already collected about this sort of thing, and am I breaking any rules by inquiring :P

Does .99999......=1?
I had this debate with a friend. He insists my question is too abstract to be solved. I do not believe it is. What does everyone here believe? (and yes, he already showed me that validity doesn't matter to him and Wikipedia agrees with him since he used to be an admin there).

i just don't like the idea of thinking of 0.99... as a number, since the number is 1. it's like -0. i don't like -0 as a number either. but i guess this debate was even more drawn out than the global warming one i was having. so i'd better stop talking about it now.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))

Yes, the limiting value is 1. If I use a summation of 0+ (9 x 10^-i) as i approaches infinity, we have this infinite summation evaluates to 1.

I thought you taught math?

didn't we already do this?
JamesYanik (548 D)

If you have ever had calculus to know it doesn't. It can be basically equal but it changes differentiability and limits. It is the difference between x>1 and x_>1

Is Valis the only one who recognizes the truth?
Or bother to click on the thread that he linked?

Aite aite, if this isn't going to net me some +1s, I might have to consider writing a meme summary again. Those are always popular.

@ghug dude i fail at math, I don't even know what that means.

1/9=.9999999...
(9)x1/9=(9) x.99999999...
1=.99999999...
That's algebraic
Lim(x)= h->1 [that's and arrow]
X=.999999 is not the limit. 1 the singular defined spot is. If it were true than th limit at would be a hole. If it is false then 1 is continuous.
That's calculus
ghug (5068 D(B))
06 Nov 14 UTC
that is retardedly false, i don't even know where to begin. nothing is based on this real number continuum.

That's a good place to start, ghug.

No offense JY, but you're wrong.
ShaolinNinja (341 D)
06 Nov 14 UTC
I agree with JY. I'm a layman when it comes to math, but the concept of ".9999 ad infitium" always felt to me as being the highest thing that isn't actually a whole number. For most practical purposes it is a 1, but it techincally isn't.
JamesYanik (548 D)
06 Nov 14 UTC
So sorry for that post, 1/9=.111111.... X 9 =.9999999....
ghug (5068 D(B))
06 Nov 14 UTC
not really. you can come up with something in mathematics that has no basis in reality, like an oracle, so that's fine for messing around. but when people use the term "real" to describe numbers they see in the reality, and think of it as some number with infinite number of digits after the decimal, they are maybe missing something. you don't have people going around calling computers oracles. like "oh say you have a computing device in O, the set of oracles", it's retarded. but the real number line is somehow not supposed to be.
KingCyrus (511 D)
06 Nov 14 UTC
Set x=.999...
x=.999....

Multiply both sides by 10
10x=9.999....

Subtract x, or .999..., from both sides
9x=9

Divide by nine
x=1

Substitute x=.999...
1=.999...

I literally wrote this proof in calc today.
JamesYanik (548 D)
06 Nov 14 UTC
TrPrado sorry

Ghug i you correct that one mistake then I'm correct
JamesYanik (548 D)

The reason why we have calculus is to help settle these issues. @trprado don't try arguing with me sutton gave this exact speel last week
ghug (5068 D(B))
06 Nov 14 UTC
but you have to admit that your thesis has nothing to do with the issue of the inclusion of impossible to exist reals in the real line.

JamesYanik (548 D)
06 Nov 14 UTC
In real life you will never find a measurement (excluding quantities) that is exactly one. String theory son
ghug (5068 D(B))
06 Nov 14 UTC
you don't know what you're talking about because you need even less than definable numbers for calculus. all you need are the computable numbers. but it would be beyond the scope of this thread for me to explain why.
TrPrado (461 D)
06 Nov 14 UTC
James, she told my class that .99999.....=1.
1/3=.33333......
3*(1/3)=3/3
3*.3333333.....=.99999999....
3/3=.99999999999......
3/3=1/1=1
1=.999999......

For all those who don't know:
Universe
Galaxy
Planet
Human
Cell
Nucleus (and more of course)
Compounds
Elements
Ions/Particles
Etc...
Then string theory states that the end all be all of everything are ultra tiny string like substances made up of string made up of string made up of string.

So, I'm taking a break from taking a break from this site, and want to play a few games.

I've noticed that we have two new variant maps, which I'm sure people put a lot of time and effort into making! Alas, variant maps rarely seem to get high-quality players, but I'd like to try them and I'd like to change that.
