NFL Week 5: Pick 'em--Wherein, Hey, There Are Actually a Lot of Good/Interesting Games!
So we kick off the week tonight with a game which looked like crap at the beginning of the year and now...looks slightly less like crap with the Bills and Browns going at it. Seattle meets Indy, the Niners and Texans square off on Sunday Night, the Raiders and Chargers play a LATER Sunday Night game no one outside California will watch, Pats/Bengals, Lions/Packers, and so on...so, once again, we ask you to...PICK 'EM!

Obi's Picks:

BUF@CLE: Ouch, neither team's ever a safe bet...a coin-flip...I like E.J. Manuel, so BILLS
BAL@MIA: The DOLPHINS failed me against the Saints, but I'll try them again here
NO@CHI: And on that note, I won't make the same mistake twice--who dat? Da SAINTS!
NE@CIN: If I'm wrong above and the Browns win, Cincy could be in trouble--PATRIOTS
DET@GB: A really interesting game, but I'll take experience and the home team--PACKERS
SEA@IND: Another partisan pick, but damn it, I just want it to be true--please, COLTS?
JAC@STL: ...Oh...what the hell...it's their best shot all year--the JAGUARS win their only game
KC@TEN: Without Locker, the CHIEFS are a lock to win here and go to 5-0
PHI@NYG: A game that looked a lot better a few weeks ago...the EAGLES break the skid
CAR@ARI: OK, the PANTHERS should be able to handle this one...right?
DEN@DAL: No question, I'll take Peyton over Romo any day...BRONCOS.
HOU@SF: Come on, you know who I have to take...gotta win this one, guys--NINERS.
SD@OAK: With KC and DEN so good, the CHARGERS may have improved for naught, but they'll win here.
NYJ@ATL: I'm always tempted to take the Jets as an upset, but it never pays off...FALCONS

BUF@CLE: Cleveland's on a roll, and at least one Ohio team has to win something this week.
BAL@MIA: The Dolphins failed you against the Saints because the Dolphins aren't a good team when Tannehill gets pressured. Baltimore and Terrell Suggs win.
NO@CHI: Saints. Duh.
NE@CIN: Like I said, only one Ohio team is winning this week. Not the Bengals.
DET@GB: This is a close one... but I'm gonna go Packers because Aaron Rodgers.
SEA@IND: I wanna go Colts, but I think the Seattle defense is going to keep the offense off the board. 10-7 Seattle.
JAC@STL: The Jaguars are going 0-16. We all know it.
KC@TEN: Chiefs. Blowout.
PHI@NYG: Eagles bring out the offense again and win big.
CAR@ARI: Cam Newton is starting for one of my fantasy teams so he'd better fucking win because I benched Sam Bradford against the Jaguars and I know he'll put up at least 20...
DEN@DAL: Until the Broncos lose one, I'm not picking against them.
HOU@SF: Matt Schaub is pissed - just enough that he's gonna shred the depleted 49ers defense. Texans win.
SD@OAK: Chargers.
NYJ@ATL: Falcons.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
03 Oct 13 UTC
Ah, ye of little faith in our defense, bo_sox!

Donte Hitner (gotta be careful with that last name now!) is gonna be pissed.

Kaep vs. Schaub, I'd still rather take Kaep...and so would Houston, I think, if they had the choice.

Schaub just isn't good against big-time defenses, and depleted though they are, the Niners are still a big-time defense and, what's more, they're at home.

I think (and gotta hope) the Niners win.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
03 Oct 13 UTC
Depends on whether the Colts v. 49ers or last week's 49ers show up. Last week was the only time they deserved to win.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
03 Oct 13 UTC
I disagree, they deserved to win vs. the Packers.

Close game all around...we got a break on a call, but 1. When you're good, you get breaks, and 2. the Packers/Clay Matthews DID spark the incident which led to the bad call, so...yeah...even if the they got a bit of help from the refs, the Niners still played like they "deserved" to win.

The defense played well in the first half of Niners/Seahawks, to-it was 5-0 Seattle at halftime...you can't do much better on defense than that...the offense just wasn't there that night and so the defense got worn down.

If the offense clicks (and I think they're starting to) and the defense doesn't have to keep going out on the field every 10 minutes after Niner 3-and-outs over and over, I think the Niners are a good pick at home.

Also, coming off a Thursday Night Game, they've had a bit longer to rest.
Saints continue their march to destiny

The NFL is run by panzies, Clay Matthews decided he wanted to hit someone so he strapped on shoulder pads and a helmet and hit someone on a football field. That's the place to do it. Fuck the sidelines. Big fucking deal.

And I don't recall criticizing the defense against Seattle. Or the Colts. Kaepernick is going to be running like crazy all night and his receivers aren't giving him much this year. Hope he enjoys it.
Can we get standing of how well we're all doing so far?

I call the Bills for tonight. I'll get the rest in a bit
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
04 Oct 13 UTC
"Fuck the sidelines. Big fucking deal."

Yeah...it is a big fucking deal...that's a penalty, and it was a dirty cheap shot at that.
Also, damn whoever picked up Austin Collie in the WebDip League.

Well, my first pick was wrong...and to boot, the Browns are in 1st place.

04 Oct 13 UTC
The Browns were already in first place earlier this year...
obiwanobiwan (248 D)

Well, yeah, but still...still shocking they're 3-2.
ePICFAeYL (221 D)
04 Oct 13 UTC
BUF@CLE: I already know Browns won so...
BAL@MIA: Dolphins come out 4-1 I think.
NO@CHI: I'm going with the Bears, despite them being a rival to my hometown Vikings. both teams come out this week 4-1
NE@CIN: Patriots remain undefeated
DET@GB: Both division rivals of Vikings, even if I do not harbor the negative feelings against GB like some Vikes fans. I'll go with GB at home.
SEA@IND: I like the Colts at home, but this one will be close.
JAC@STL: St. Louis. Haha Jaguars suck.
KC@TEN: Chiefs remain undefeated
PHI@NYG: Giants are garbage right now. Eagles.
CAR@ARI: Eh. I dont know/care enough about either team to make a decision. I'll go with the home team, Arizona.
DEN@DAL: Broncos 5-0. #PeytonHype
HOU@SF: I'm liking Houston in this one.
SD@OAK: Chargers.
NYJ@ATL: I'll go with the Falcons just because I am not impressed with the Jets enough to pick them.
Zachattack413 (1231 D)
05 Oct 13 UTC
BUF@CLE: Bills pick up a win on the.... oh wait.
BAL@MIA: DOLPHINS win a tough battle. I'm just not impressed with Baltimore this year.
NO@CHI: Proud defense coming off a bad outing. New Orleans defense forces a couple of turnovers, but Brees continues his struggles against DA BEARS
NE@CIN: BENGALS use home field to dethrone the Pats
DET@GB: GB crushes the lions in Lambeau
SEA@IND: My brilliant pick last week foiled by a horrible pass by Schaub. I'm sticking with my guns. Seahawks play poorly on the road. COLTS
JAC@STL: Insert team playing Jags here (ST LOUIS)
KC@TEN: I wish Locker wasn't hurt so I could pick the titans. Screw it, TITANS
PHI@NYG: GIANTS win at home
CAR@ARI: PANTHERS defense is pretty solid in this one
DEN@DAL: Best offense ever? DENVER
HOU@SF: I can't pick Houston again after last week. SAN FRANCISCO
SD@OAK: SAN DIEGO super chargers.
NYJ@ATL: FALCONS at home in the dome.
Here's the rest of mine.

BAL@MIA: DOLPHINS win because I too am not impressed with Baltimore this year.
NO@CHI: This is a tough one, but SAINTS defense is much improved this year, which will balance out the score in their favor.
NE@CIN: PATRIOTS somehow find a way to get it done
DET@GB: LIONS come out with the surprise win against the Pack
SEA@IND: Don't bet against these guys. SEAHAWKS win it in a blowout.
JAC@STL: Uhhh....RAMS
KC@TEN: Titans have a good defense, but offense is shaky at best without Locker. CHIEFS
PHI@NYG: GIANTS maybe win their first game? Hopefully?
CAR@ARI: I'm liking the PANTHERS right now
DEN@DAL: Ahahahahah. hahahahah.....hahahaha. DENVER
HOU@SF: 49ERS start steamrolling again. They had a rough few weeks but they're still elite.
SD@OAK: CHARGERS.
NYJ@ATL: J-E-T-S, FALCONS WIN

For the record, I'm also not sold on Kansas City. Combined record of their opponents:
3-13. Only team they have played with a .500 record they barely won at home. It just sucks that Locker isn't playing so the Chiefs can lose.

Can someone explain to me why they make west coast teams fly and then play early games? Adding a time-zone advantage to home field advantage seems kind of unfair.
Draugnar (0 DX)
06 Oct 13 UTC
God loves the Bengals! Patriots get a shot to run down field and tie it up and it starts raining so hard you can barely see the players and the ball is getting slippery and the wind is screwing up Brady's throws (or so the announcers, all pro-Patriots think) then as soon as the Bengals intercept his throw, the rain stops. One play knee and the game is over.

Of course, if Brady were so good, how come the Bengals made a field goal and a touch down stopping the Patriots on their drive after the field goal and keeping them to a field goal after the touch down to make it at one point 13-3.

Who Dey!
Draugnar (0 DX)
06 Oct 13 UTC
I hardly think a 1 o'clock East coast game (10 AM west coast) is that early. All those guys should have been up and at it long before game time started at home even. Hell, it's Sunday and I was up at 7:30.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

Okay, ghug, please don't tell me you're going to blame your beloved Seahawks loss on lack of sleep..........
ghug (5068 D(B))

No, I didn't watch the game, so I don't know why they lost, but I think 10:00 AM is a bit early to have a bunch of road games when you consider that you have to be ready a while before again and that many people have natural sleep schedules that call for them to get up much later. I just don't understand why NFL would let that be a factor.

Bo, why are you such an ass? I'm just curious. It seems like you could be a lot less of a horrible person.
West Coast teams should not be playing away games in the noon slots.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
06 Oct 13 UTC
A lot less of a horrible person? Gee, thanks. I'm a Red Sox fan, means I'm automatically a horrible person, and my underdog just beat your Seahawks, who, by the way, might be the most stacked team in the NFL in the last decade, and we're talking above a Colts team and a Patriots team that both nearly went undefeated, and they are still yet to see Percy Harvin play a snap.

You assume I hate you because you're a Red Sox fan or because my football team just lost. I'll have you know that there are plenty of Sox fans that I like and that I'm not that emotionally invested in football. I've just noticed that you're unnecessarily confrontational about things and that you often post stupid shit that serves to do nothing but clog up the forum. You really just have no redeeming qualities.

I enjoyed both the School of War and Dojo of War experiences this summer. Doing both at the same time was idiocy on my part, and I still owe an EoG for Dojo. However, the amount of learning was good, and humbling. I am proposing another learning game.

Best way to make more money out of money?
So there's a bunch of money I'm not planning to spend for at least 2 years. Can I best keep it on a bank account as usual or are there more lucrative options that have about the same risk level as a bank account (practically none, since in this case the government returns the money if the bank goes boom)?

When is it OK to start watching basketball again?
I stopped watching basketball altogether after the LeBron James "Decision" and strike-shortened season turned the NBA into a soap opera telenovela. Is the nonsense over yet? Are people playing basketball again? Like they mean business? Is there a new Bill Laimbeer out there fouling out and taking a bow before a booing crowd?

Interesting Poll
What would happen if during an election between two candidates for a political office a poll was held, where instead of preference for either candidate, people could "mix" the candidates, assigning percentages to each..? That should yield interesting and data on your electorate distribution..

reputation
i think you can get along fine until you pass a certain threshold of douchebaggery, then you get a reputation, and a flood of stories get brought up in everyday gossip and your cause is lost.

so does anybody have strategies for maximizing douchebaggery without losing reputation? i think the only hope is to conform. if you are a nonconformist, then any small thing will seem big because people will constantly hear of it because you are often talked about.

That's right, 83% of Federal Spending is still flowing. Time to take the 17% that is "non-essential" and give it to the states where it belongs, or let private industry perform the same functions.
