Gunboat to introduce new players to site
I introduced several friends to Webdiplomacy, through a full-press game. Several players (five!) indicated they want to play another gunboat game on the side to get the hang of the site. They're reasonably experienced, so we're looking for two reasonable other players to give some staunch opposition.
Who feels like a game?!

Thoughts of Americans about opinions of "foreigners"about Americans?
So, Americans, what do you think of our opinions of you? What do you think we think about you? I'm curious, because I hear rather often how we are all blaming America blablabla while I know no one who actually does that.

I am willing to take the time to get this off the ground. I will need the following groups of players. Please take serious note of the requirements:

Players: This will require 7 players to actually play the game. The requirements will be as follows: (a) You must have completed at least 3 games on this site. I will also examine players that have resigns. If you have a resignation on your profile, it will require an earnest explanation to be accepted. The SoW cannot afford to have players quit at some point in the game. (b) you cannot have a solid record of success. This is for beginners and players that regularly feel they are "under-performers". As such, if you have a high win/draw percentage, then participating as a player may not be the role for you. I will look for players with less than a combined 20% win/draw percent.

Teaching Assistants (TA): Needed are 7 TA's. These should be highly qualified players with a record of success. TA's will volunteer to help players learn how to play one of the seven powers. If you volunteer as a TA, please submit the desired country you wish to TA for as well as 2 alternate countries (3 total, in order of preference). To be a TA, it is preferred to have players in the top 200 GR for the current month's rating. I prefer for TA's to have at least a 35% win/draw percentage, although 40% is preferred.

Professors: 2 professors are needed to comment on each season/year in the forum thread dedicated to the SoW. Professors need to have a clear record of success and should be in the top 100 GR. In terms of success, they should have at least a 50% win/draw record, although this requirement is waived for players in the top 100 GR.

Please submit your desire to participate in this thread. I will plan on being either a TA or a Professor.

I'd like to Professor for this one if that's a possibility. My GR isn't where it should be right now but my peak is solid and my reputation should speak for itself.
I would happily TA, assuming this is normal SoW and not gunboat. Equally top preferences of Austria and France, with Italy as my third choice..

I'm okay with professor or TA. My GR isn't perfect at the moment but my peak is much better. I'll let you decide; either is fine.

Preference:
1)Austria
2)Russia
Then, I don't really mind...
3)England, Germany, Italy, Turkey

I would let France to someone else.

20% win/draw for players? I don't think anybody has been beat up that bad on this site.

Also as a former participant, the more professors the better. Sometimes they get busy and can't post and it's the most fun part about this game is seeing the commentary.
2ndWhiteLine (2606 D(B))

Right on Gen. Lee. If I recall, the professors were AWOL for quite a bit of the most recent SOW.
hecks (164 D)
14 May 13 UTC
If you end up needing more students, I'd play. My W+D% exceeds the stated parameters (33%) but that number's inflated because I'm much better at gunboat than at press games. The actual percentage in press game would be abysmal.
hecks (164 D)
14 May 13 UTC
^ To illustrate my point, I have 5 wins. 4 were gunboat and 1 was public press only. None were full press.

You have played 6 games.. you have plenty of time left.
Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))

They did pretty good last time. But they did miss a few phases and have to back track to catch up. But as a student the first thing I would do when i logged in the site was check the forum thread to see if new professor commentary was up. I would say as many as 5 professors could be a good number. It will be heavy at first (of course I love reading the different "opening speech/general game philosophy" of each), but later down the road when the game is a bit stale there should be good coverage to at least get some comments each moves phase and would allow for some to take a break when needed.

Just a note, everyone who is a student in this game is very lucky if Tru Ninja is a professor. He is by far the best professor I've seen in these games!

@atundal

Okay i didn't consider the skewed percentages for not very many games played. But imo anyone below 40% win/draw could learn a lot from one-on-one coaching/analysis from a TA and from following this thread/professor commentary in general.

My win/draw percent is also fairly high in relation to the parameters set earlier, but I'd play if there was room in the game--there's always more to learn. A handful of my draws were artificial due to banned/CD'd players anyway.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
14 May 13 UTC
Gen. Lee, that would be a good number. Not only would it allow for everyone to have the commentary when they want it, but it would also allow people to grow into different perspectives. Gunboats are pretty well laid out - there are certain strategies that you follow or you probably lose. Press is based on the press.

I'm open to being a professor, I know others are too, and I think five is a good number, not only for the increased involvement but because I know for a fact that I have different things to say than some. My guess is that Tru and 2WL would agree that this is the case with their own play.
Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))

Ugh...alright good point 2WL.

Chances are TruNinja knows what he's talking about a hell of a lot more than I do.

I am about to graduate...
Hello WebDip community.
I am about to graduate high school (2 weeks after tomorrow) and I was wondering if anybody here has any general tips or experiences they can share with me and/or anybody who is graduating. I believe many of you on this site have gone through college or high school already, and was just wondering if anybody could ease my nerves about my future.
I am going to be attending University of River Falls - Wisconsin in the USA; I plan on becoming a teacher.

Men's Clothing
I just got my first real job last week and now I'm in a bit of a tight spot. My wardrobe needs to be updated to be semi-professional and done (mostly) on the kind-of cheap. My work environment is not overly formal (no tie or suit) but I still want to look good and purchase good quality and good fitting clothing and would like some recommendations.

Using the vote button in gunboat
Can someone please clarify what the new rules are about using the vote buttons in gunboat? Back in the day communication using these buttons was accepted (eg. "Cancel" = let's stop fighting, "Draw" = let's take out the big guy, "Pause" = Somebody help me, etc.). I know there was some tl;dr about it in the Gunboat Tournament thread but if any mods/admins can clear it up here i'd appreciate it.
