Who wants a piece of this???
As some of you may have noticed, I've been discretely playing a random game here and there in the last bit. Having seen my last one end because a dumb ass resigned, I thought it was time for fiercer competition. Any takers?

Clicking "+1" just takes you to the top of the page.
I tried to click the +1 icon on a posting I liked, but it just jumps you to the top of the page. Presumably this is something to do with the earlier WebDip outage.

Live game start or cancel.
So the site was out of order for a while. A live gunboat is still to begin (although it's set a 'now'), it doesn't start, nor can anyone leave. Is there anything we can do about this situation?

Interesting in that the NMR'r in the orginal game (who motivated the parenthetical comment in the new title) was Sargemacher.

We don't normally discuss the details behind bans, but given the high visibility of this account and the inevitable questions that may arise, we have decided to make a statement to clarify matters.

Had a chance to explain American politics today
It was an interesting opportunity. It started with my coworker asking about the electoral college and evolved into a general question of how American politics works. Her reaction was mixed. I know we log on here every day and gripe about how our politics suck, but after my holistic explanation, I feel almost grateful we have politics to gripe about. Our problems really aren't that bad. (Unless Romney/ Ryan wins, jk! not really.)

Game
In commemoration of a string of high-profile bans lately, I've created a game to celebrate. I am looking forward to decreasing the number of games "infected" by a multi from 45% to about 10%, which is what mine is. If you want the password, message me. Don't play if you're a multi because the mods will be keeping close tabs on all of us I'm sure.

So....is playing a game with a missing player from Spring 01 really fun?
.
Skittles (1014 D)
31 Oct 12 UTC
It really is pretty comical that people will sit through a couple-hour game not having fun just to increase virtual points or rating.

Meanwhile, the rest of us are forced to sit through a couple-hour game not having fun so WE don't look like the bad person for resigning.

Sigh.

And the cheaters and point grubbers think people who resign under these situations should be banned. Hilarity.

Maybe we should ban players who don't draw/cancel for a CD in the first three years. ;)
BreathOfVega (597 D)

It would be nice to automatically cancel a game with a CD in 1901...

Skittles (1014 D)

BoV, that sounds nice in theory, but it's easily exploitable. Don't get the country you wanted to play? CD and get auto cancel.

If that happened, they would need a resign added to their record to combat that.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

Exactly ^
cspieker (18223 D)

Better would be to automatically cancel for an NMR in Spring 1901,

*BUT* the NMRer(s) would not get their points back, and you'd get a little message that "XXX left the game" like you get when someone leaves before a game is started.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
31 Oct 12 UTC
Maybe someone could code it so that the game is essentially auto-drawn but counted as a cancel.
dubmdell (556 D)
01 Nov 12 UTC
I could see any CD in 1901 auto-drawn so that it doesn't affect GR, but it does affect someone's resign record. Of course, we would then wish to implement a reliability rating like vdip, and I'm not sure webdip [read: kestas] is ready for that.

Interesting how you were sitting here talking about a Live Anon Game as it was happening. I didnt know you were allowed to do that.
Skittles (1014 D)
01 Nov 12 UTC
I wasn't talking about a specific game. I was talking about a situation that happens very often. Being a game like that currently just led me to post about the topic at that time. I've commented on the issue before, even when not in games, and I'm sure I'll comment on the issue again in the future because this is a recurring problem in this community.

brainbomb (295 D)

I agree. but I have very rarely been in a game with a CD where everyone actually draw. usually some ass-wad tries to seize the moment.

I'm sure Michiganman would tell how I got my 4th win on here. it wasnt a very good game multiple cd's, I was turkey, he had a phone call and he missed 2 phases as Austria. When he came back he was almost gone. Early on Russia had CD'd but some people wouldn't vote draw or cancel. I had only a cancel vote up and after the game I get people attacking me for going for a win. Like what??? got to be kidding me.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
01 Nov 12 UTC
What I have proposed in the past is have an option that will not let the phase progress if there is an NMR. The phase would be extended by one phase length and the NMR player would get an NMR on their record. If it happens a second time, the player gets another NMR on their record as well as a Resign, country goes into CD and the game is paused. The remaining players can draw or cancel. If one player wants to play on but the others do not, tough for him because the game is paused.

And of course add in vdip's reliability rating so that having NMRs and Resigns on your record will cost you getting into games without picking up other player's CDs.

This also helps when one player accidentally NMRs in mid-game. Keeps the game from being ruined. If abused for a temporary pause then you have to pick up some CDs to fix your reliability rating.

Surprise surprise that the asswads were Split & Lando.
Why Putin? Is it because Split & Lando had draw/cancel votes from autumn '01,two years before the asswad Putin had it? And because Putin voted for it two years after when he realized he was going to be defeated by Ita/Aus? Is it because of that you call us asswads?
Skittles (1014 D)
01 Nov 12 UTC
To give SD credit, he did have his vote up early aannd for several years. Lando put his up a bit later if I recall correctly. Wasnt it England who waited until he was getting smashed to put his vote up?

I was pissed last night, so sorry if I over-reacted.
BreathOfVega (597 D)
01 Nov 12 UTC
I wasn't considering that by cancelling a game you cancel your resign too, sorry.
That said, I don't know if I prefer to play a game with a CD in 1901 or to make auto-cancel exploitable that way.
If a resign is non-anonimous, something like "FatAss abandoned the game" would remain in your home-page and in your knowledge even after game cancel. That said, maybe public shame wouldn't be enough to refrain him to do it again, I don't know. Unless we find a way to punish early habitual resigners, we will have to endure this, I suppose.

When someone resigns and then get eliminated, his record shows "defeated" and not "resigned", doesn't it? This too should be adjusted in my opinion...

Yes, the six player variant can be fun, it presents an interesting challange which is different from the normal 7 player game - it is unbalanced and you don't even know what to expect from the 7th player who may be taken over once in CD; this can he very challenging for some countries. Anyone with an automatic ally (like russia-turkey or italy-austria) may have their work cut out for them; though on the plus side the get some easy centers (plus automaticaly allying is a bad idea in general as being predictable tends to make you an easier target) - in general i'd say attacking a neighbour who doesn't message you in S1901 is a good standard opening - you don't know what they may do and if they CD you gain great advantage - plus defaulting to this would encourage everyone to talk to their neighbours...

You must be confusing me with someone else. I put my vote up in the first year. Try again. And you know damn well you are notorious for never drawing/canceling a bogus game.
And you are notorious for your idiocy.

Why does the United States still use the electoral college?
I feel it is outdated and unrepresentative. The millions of us who are political minorities within our states that are statistically impossible to swing are essentially left out of the entire election as much as foreigners are left out. This is undemocratic and unjust, is it not? If not, why not?
