I've walked down plenty of backstreets here in Motown as a white guy, and I've never had a problem.
My friend from America came here to visit. We went to Berlin for a visit and he was beat up and forced (they shoved drugs in his pockets and threatened to call the cops if he didn't buy them) to buy drugs. The people who committed it were a Turkish man and a Black North African. Now am I saying that ALL Turkish-Germans or ALL African-Germans are like this. Fuck no. But when the only one they grabbed was him... a white American who was speaking to me on a cell phone in flawless German... there is a race issue. They didn't mug the other Turks or Africans in the area (which I know is an area with plenty of them), but they singled him out. He was just on his way to a techno club, he wasn't in a business suit.

@Sacred - You are FULL OF SHIT. I call your bullshit. yeah...you've walked lots of backstreets in the city of Detroit. fuck you, liar. I, as well as my family members, have had vehicles broken in to in Detroit in BROAD DAYLIGHT with people all around...and yet nobody sees anything. The fucking degenerates populating Detroit will hardly stand up for "their own", let alone a Caucasian from north of 8 mile. Detroit is the most racist city anywhere, thanks to Coleman Young.

Tell me a place you want me to take a photo of myself in downtown D, I'll gladly do it. I'm downtown at least once a month.
SacredDigits (102 D)
14 Oct 11 UTC
And I've had vastly different experiences downtown. My wife works in the Ren Cen, I've walked from there to Belle Isle with no issue, down by the river where there's the old abandoned factories. One of my best friends is a black guy who lives in Highland Park, never had an issue going there. I've walked up to Greektown too from the Ren Cen, in fact, many of my wife's coworkers regularly do. I've visited the DIA a few times, walked around that area, and taken my kids to Cobo and Comerica.

Greektown has a mess of backstreets, it's pretty clean and safe. Riverside maybe less so, but like I said, never had a problem.
krellin (80 DX)
14 Oct 11 UTC
How about you walk down the street through a neighborhood around, let's say, 6 Mile and Livernois at around 11:00 PM. Take a picture of some of the friendly neighbors waving hello....
krellin (80 DX)
14 Oct 11 UTC
Greek Town (Police Central) ....Ren Cen (The Fortress...), Highland Park (NOT Detroit...) Greektown to rencen....again, highly patrolled by police. blah blah blah DIA....again, police protected. so...sacredDigits has been to about 1% of Detroit....i.e. the 1 % that is publicized and thus has a lot of police because that where they want whities from Oakland county to come spend money. I suggest you walk about 2 miles in ANY direction AWAY from ANY location that you listed.

You are a fucking hypocrite to pretend that Detroit is safe when you total sum of experience in the city is 1. GM Headquarters (the RenCen) 2. Greektown (the Casino) and 3. the DIA (the only Museum in Detroit). To pretend that THAT represents Detroit is a total fucking lie.

*I* have done business in Detroit, and driven through burned out neighborhoods to get to the one factory surrounded by 10 that are burned out and abandoned. I've had to park my car within the 15 foot high barbed-wire fence at NOON so that nobody would break into it while I had a meeting. And the....I've STILL had my vehicle broken in to in broad daylight while on budiness, with tons of niggers on the street and NOT ONE saw a thing.

Detroit is a fucking cesspool.

Ren Cen to Belle Isle can get rough. 8 Mile and Livernois? You're on. I'll gladly go there. A few months ago I stopped for gas on 8 Mile, no issues. I have friends that live off it too.

Now, I won't be able to just go immediately, but I promise I'll go. And the DIA is not the only museum in Detroit. There's the Science Center, the African American Museum, the History Museum, I've gone to all of those too. But the DIA most frequently. And I took wrong turns heading to the Joe and to the DIA on occasions, I've seen bad areas, but generally speaking they're mostly deserted these days. I've seen far worse in my former homes of Buffalo, Chicago, and Hong Kong.

Oh, and if I saw those people who broke into your car and didn't say a thing. I'd high five them. Another racist scumbag got what he deserved. Happy day.

The most dangerous cities website doesn't list why they rank them in the order they do, so unless you have some kind of empirical evidence, I'm going to believe there's at least a helping of hype in putting it that high.
Putin33 (111 D)

Uh, you can't even get into Mogadishu as a tourist because there is continual street fighting. Foreigners are abducted on the spot. Krellin hates Detroit because it isn't white enough.

I'm actually going to a house party in Hamtramck tomorrow night, which is pretty close to 8 Mile and Livernois. Depending on what time I leave, I'll stop by and take a picture.
SacredDigits (102 D)

Shit, there's a Wendy's on 8 Mile and Livernois. Stop by. I'll buy you some chicken nuggets.
SacredDigits (102 D)

I'm checking out this awful neighborhood of 8 Mile and Livernois on google Earth right now. Man, I can see how scary it could be. The BP station looks closed! The other two gas stations seem open, as does the auto repair shop, but granted, the gas prices make it look about two years old. We've got saplings carefully planted in the median, and flower urns near them, who knows, maybe those saplings are TREES WITH GUNS by now. There's a Wendy's and a KFC, and...is that a Tubby's? Damn, my local ones closed about five years back, might have to hit that up. All the cars are recent model years, nothing looks at all in ill repair except the guy at the Valero does have his hood up. Man, this place is terrifying.
SacredDigits (102 D)
14 Oct 11 UTC
Oh, wait, you said six, not eight, right? Six and Livernois only has a McD's and a major university. Much rougher.

I'm willing to bet the reason krellin has so much trouble is because he actively picks fights with people he passes on the street. Would that really surprise you?
Though I have never been to Detroit, if it is on par with Grozny, I would never want to. From what I have heard from some of the Russian soldiers I talked to; Chechnya is a scary place.

Also stop hating on Detroit lol it's not that bad. I regularly get ice cream in Houston's Third Ward and Mexican food in our hardest barrios. Why? Yes there's more crime there than in other areas, but let's be real... crime is actually not that common just about anywhere in America. And the ice cream and soul food in Third Ward and the Mexican food in the barrios are all so good lol
SacredDigits (102 D)
14 Oct 11 UTC
I've checked into this area, and I have to agree with Mafialligator. The 2009 Final Four (a national level sporting event in the US) was hosted at the University Detroit Mercy which is on one corner of the intersection, and a private golf club two blocks away is negotiating to get a PGA Tour (national level sporting event) stop. Compared to parts of town I've been to, this is clownshoes. Compared to cities I've been to such as Macau, this is practically Mayberry.

I live at 8 mile and Kelly. Detroit is not that bad. Not as bad as the media portrays it. yes, there is crime and blight...mostly due to the auto industry collapse. But also due to corruption.

But Detroit is not a cesspool. It's a lively, diverse, and proud city. Mayor Bing has done a decent job so far of cleaning it up, firing corrupted officials and getting it back on track.

Sacred - they are bringing back the Grand Prix to Belle Isle I heard.

Danger in the US of A is less about where and more about where and when combined together. I'm good with walking around OVer the Rhine in the daytime, but you wouldn't catch me there at 1 AM just as Central PArk in NYC is a great place to hang out during the day, but has danger potential after midnight to the person who isn't aware of their surroundings.

It's also about how you dress and how you act. Walk thorugh OTR in Cinci all dressed up and acting uppity at 11PM with a nice Rolex on the wrist and snear at the homeless and the residents as you walk by like you are somehow better than them and you are more likely to get mugged, car jacked, and killed than if you just act like a normal person and treat the people who live there with respect.
SacredDigits (102 D)
14 Oct 11 UTC
I heard about the Grand Prix coming back too, that'd be awesome. There's also a movement to reopen the Aquarium there, I really hope they succeed because back when it and the zoo were open (not all that long ago) Belle Isle was really nice. Now it's just mostly nice.

StP Fleet NC in Builds 1901
When would it make sense to build Fleet StP 1901 instead of an army there? Isn't the army there much more flexible and useful? My point is that Russia cannot hope to mount a full offensive on England this early - and certainly not a naval one, so isn't his best hope in the North to mount a flexible defense while spooking Germany into helping him? Even when he succeeds in doing so, wouldn't Germany play the major naval part with your original fleet supporting from the Norwegian?

Iran-U.S. Relations
The Iranian government won't provoke the US into war because Iran would not win. Iran's nuclear ambitions result from a regional struggle with Saudi Arabia and having a weapon would increase local prestige/power; Iranian possession of a weapon is certainly not a threat to the US, and is less of a threat than to the US than Pakistan's weapons are.

NFL Week 5 Pick 'Em
Cocnkey topped the field of WebDip NFL Experts--sure, we're experts, right?--with 14 games picked correctly...congrats! (Full standings inside!)
But its a new week! The Jets and Pats enter a game neither can afford to lose with the upstart Bills at 3-1! Buffalo can drop Philly's Dream Team to 1-4 with a win! Oakland, Houston, Tampa, and San Fran all play as upstarts trying to gain standing! GB@ATL in the nightcap, and DET@CHI on Monday Night! Week 5...PICK 'EM!

Player collusion in anonymous, nil message games.
Do people think that it actually happens much, in games with no messaging at all, that two players decide before the game to help each other. I'm not complaining, or accusing, I just wanted to know what people's thoughts are about this. I have only come across one game where I suspected that the two players were in cahoots from before the game started, but whether or not it happened, the actions of two players kind of ruined the game.
