Panic--Unable to issue orders
I've tried to save/ready orders from IE8, Firefox, and Chrome on my windows 7 machine (from which up until now I've been able to) and the page just seems to hang even if I leave it for ~5 mins. Same result from Firefox and Chrome on my Ubuntu machine.Obviously I can post messages so I don't know what's going on...Anybody have ideas to help?

Live, but not at such a frantic pace
I have often wanted to play live, but not at such a frantic pace as five minute turns. Doesn't leave much time for diplomacy.
I wonder if there are others who would like to "play live" for a couple hours and then finish up on a 12 hour or 24 hour schedule.
Has anyone suggested that before? Is there a list of players somewhere who are interested in such an arrangement?

What's the procedure for requesting a multi-accounting check? Please take a look at Game ID 49803. France is going to win. I'd just like to make sure that it was a fair win given that Italy supported him throughout the entire game. Thank you.

"Duceppe has a legitimate grievance with that." The candidate run in Duceppe's riding was most certainly not a ballot filler. Helene Laverdiere is an excellent candidate. And I dunno. It seems mostly like it's Duceppe's fault that his party was routed. The NDP is allowed to run whomsoever it likes (and whomsoever is willing to run for them), and if people vote for them, it doesn't seem like Duceppe can do anything about it. It's not like they had a choice between a good, highly experienced politician and a communist karate instructor, and chose the communist anyway. They were making due with what they had. And to be fair, Harper should have a grievance with that too. The communist guy unseated the Foreign Affairs Minister, Lawrence Cannon.
The thing is that for decades people have been refusing to take the NDP seriously, and so refusing to give them the resources and tools necessary to win. And now that they've become a force to be reckoned with overnight, some of their political machine is a little slapped together, and people are saying "They shouldn't be in parliament! They're too ramshackle!" While at the same time refusing to acknowledge that clearly something about the NDP resonated strongly with a large portion of voters, despite, or perhaps even BECAUSE of the fact that in parts of Quebec they ran younger candidates with more community involvement than federal or provincial political experience.

I'm not talking about Duceppe's riding in particular. I'm saying Duceppe has a legitimate grievance with the fact that in many ridings in Quebec the NDP only ran ballot fillers. I'm not saying the NDP had much of a choice in the matter due to resources and whatnot, but still it must burn a little that people elected reps who weren't even campaigning in Quebec, many did't speak French, some were on vacation in France and Las Vegas, and in other cases, were NOBs.

The NDP better deliver for Quebec or whoever replaces Duceppe as leader will have a field day with the NDP's absentee MPs. I highly doubt the BQ is going to just vanish. NDP has an opportunity here, hope they follow through.
Mafialligator (239 D)
04 May 11 UTC
Only one candidate isn't fluent in french, and she is the same one who was on vacation in Las Vegas, and she was a second choice ballot filler candidate. And one of the things about the Bloc is that it has a way of attracting second tier talent from the separatist pool. All the people with real talent and real ambition (with the sole exception of Duceppe) run for the PQ in provincial politics. I don't see this upcoming leadership race as likely to be much different.
pastoralan (100 D)

"Duceppe has a legitimate grievance with that." Why? Because the party he led lost to candidates who weren't taken seriously by their own party? If your party is so unpalatable that voters would literally choose any random person over the person you present to them, it's your problem, not the voters'.
Putin33 (111 D)

And she was elected in a riding that is 98% French speaking. Since many of NDP's Quebec candidates were students, some at universities not in Quebec, I wouldn't be surprised if this happened in other cases. I haven't had time to look it up.

"Why? Because the party he led lost to candidates who weren't taken seriously by their own party?"

It's a testament to the fact that Canadian politics are much more party-centered than candidate centered than the US that this would happen. Voters clearly were voting for candidates not on the basis of local issues, but the appeal of national party leaders. I wish Americans did this more often and thought of the national composition of forces. All I'm saying is I can see why some BQers would be pissed, yet another example of Anglo colonialism.

You didn't need to post a link to her, obviously I know who she is, and I'd say she's the most egregious case. As far as I can tell the other student candidates, aside from Ms. Brosseau in Quebec, 3 of them are Francophones at McGill University (which is most definitely in Quebec) Charmaine Borg, Matthew Dube and Mylene Freeman. I'm not sure about Laurin Liu. Mathieu Ravignat is the communist guy and is most definitely a francophone. The rest of the ballot filler candidates were students at the Universite de Montreal, Universite de Laval, Universite de Sherbrooke and UQAM, all of which are French Universities. One English candidate representing an francophone riding. It's not an optimal situation, but it's nothing like as bad as you make it sound.

Obama only got 49% of the vote...
Putin33 (111 D)

That's an inevitable outcome of a plurality system, though. If Canada wanted a government that is proportional to party support, they'd ratify a PR system.

"It's not an optimal situation, but it's nothing like as bad as you make it sound."

Fair enough, as I said I didn't research the other cases. You're more familiar with this topic than I. I read a Duceppe speech and was enthralled with his rhetoric.

Also, does anyone else really dislike our voting system?
joey1 (198 D)

I would much prefer a mixed system where some members are voted in by riding and others by party (70% ridings, 30% party). I would prefer to have 2 choices on our ballots, 1 for party and 1 for person.

Therefore there would be a higher chance of having some good local independents elected in ridings, so you can vote for them and still vote for the party that you like, and also the party can put it star candidates in the party list and not have to parachute them into the local ridings and come up with a situation where you would like Lawrence Cannon in the Cabinet, but you can't because he lost his riding to the NDP.

What would you do with the overhang seats - that is, situations in which a party wins district seats which makes them exceed their proportion of the overall vote?
Mafialligator (239 D)
05 May 11 UTC
@ Fasces - "Obama only got 49% of the vote..." - Uhh, I realize this isn't the most reliable of sources but according to wikipedia he got 52.9% of the vote. And even so, I would very surprised if a thread posted the day after Obama's election, titled "Thoughts on the Presidential election?" didn't also contain some lively debate.

A lot of Canadians do want a proportional representation system, but we aren't going to get it under Harper. He knows he got his majority because of a Liberal-NDP vote split.

"Huh, I wonder if Harper only got this majority because everyone hates Ignatieff?" It's not just Ignatieff, the Liberals have been on something of a downslide for the better part of a decade. Ever since the sponsorship scandal. That they haven't had a very charismatic leader to help capture the public imagination, and that they've stopped really standing for anything except "Please give us power again." is certainly not helping. The real reason for the Harper majority is a quirk of our voting system, which means that a conservative candidate can win in a riding where the vote is split between an increasingly popular NDP and a stumbling liberal candidate.
Mafialligator (239 D)

And yes Putin, Duceppe is an excellent public speaker (if you understand French that is, a lot of his flair is lost in the simultaneous translation) but as a Canadian living in Quebec the idea of Quebec Separatism is still rather upsetting to me. I have respect for Duceppe, but I cannot agree with what he stands for.
joey1 (198 D)
05 May 11 UTC
@Putin, Its like two separate elections. Therefore that is not an issue. It could still be possible for parties to recieve less votes and still win, but it would be ballenced out a little and let the leaders campain on a national level and not be as concerned with wining an individual riding.

"A lot of Canadians do want a proportional representation system, but we aren't going to get it under Harper. He knows he got his majority because of a Liberal-NDP vote split."
No he didn't he got it because he ran the best campaign. He had 2% less then the last Liberal majority, so it can't just be about vote split as most majorities get around 45%.

A proportianal system would be terrible, as we wouldn't have had a single majority government since Trudeau...
Yonni (136 D(S))
05 May 11 UTC
There must be some sort of hybrid system where a proportional system awards a 'majority' government to a part with >40/45%.

Or a proportional vote to determine the senate. Make the vote a fixed 4/5 year cycle (that doesn't fall with the government). It will still provide checks and balances for the house but will be far more democratic and can give a voice to the parties that are lost because of the lack of prop-rep.

- the last liberal majority was the result of a vote split between the old PC party and the Reform/Alliance party.
In any first past the post system with more than two parties, vote splitting ALWAYS comes into play.
Putin33 (111 D)
05 May 11 UTC
"Therefore that is not an issue."

But it is an issue. Germany has exactly what you propose, they deduct parties' wins in district elections from the seats they gain through the PR vote. I was wondering if that's what you had in mind, but it seems your system would not be exactly proportional.
