Its fine and dandy for a member to call another member a "hook-nosed kike" with impunity, but on the other hand, spam the same member you are liable to discipline. I guess its appropriate on this site to describe this site as a fucking disgrace.

I actually enjoy the free speech of these forums. Some of the things said here may be considered offensive to some persons. Were I to be more serious about things such as race and ethnicity, as someone who has some jewish family members, I might take offense to maple's comments as well.

However, it is his right to spout garbage if he wants, just like it is Santa's right to call him out on spouting garbage on the forums. It is my right to classify it as garbage. It's other people's rights to troll the forums if they so choose.

The moderaters do not have the rights, inclination, or ability to moderate the forums. I agree with some of the other people here when they say its either completely free or its not. You have the ability and the right to avoid people or forum topics which offend you. It's that simple.

Santa, I sympathize with your being offended by racial slurs. However, as someone who's been verbally abused by you in game before, I find it strange to see you bring up something like this. However, it is your right to be offended. Theres nothing in the rules against being offended, or stating that you are offended.

What is agiainst the rules is spamming a pm inbox, specifically in this case, maple's. That is something the mods can handle, and something they will fix. It's not the language in the pms, its the rate of sending that constitutes spam. Had maple spammed you with racial slurs, he would have been told off also, but he didnt.

So your original complaint of the mods making this site a "fucking disgrace" is invalid I think. As the rules stand now, you are the one that violated them by spamming someone. There are no rules against flaming on the forum.

If you are of the opinion that it is wrong (which I assume most people are) then don't use them. Maple is apparantly not of that same opinion. Therefore, i suggest you avoid him in the future.
Egg look up chainsaw diplomacy ;)

To be honest, to me, it's never about the words per se but about the delivery. And I just can't take any electronic delivery seriously at all. I'm not saying you should be all, "Thumbs up! I got called a racial slur! Yes, my life is complete!" but the reality is that the internet is a cesspool. You either spend your life constantly agitated about it, or you don't. And ultimately, the choice is up to you.

The people who stoop to racial slurs are small-minded and beneath notice. So stop noticing them. It will either irritate them into doing something actionable by the current rules or more or less make them stop.

And, if nothing else, look at it realistically. It's been known that we're seriously understaffed on the mod side. There's huge backlogs on the mod e-mail. By the nature of the site, it requires the admins to be VERY choosy about who they make a mod, so "make more" isn't really a workable option. If we added more work to what they do, especially as a sea change from our current "Wild West" situation, it'll gum up a lot of things.

"as someone who's been verbally abused by you in game before"

Funny you should mention that because I've been verbally abused in the forums and via PM by Santa.

And to be perfectly honest here, I was tempted to take the low road and sling racial slurs at him for it. Want to know why? Because he made it a point to tell me his emphasize his heritage. However, I took the high road and made no such comments because I didn't feel it was the right thing to do.

But here's my point...if you are going to go out of your way to inform people of your heritage, don't be surprised if they use that against you.

I'm sure if someone had told maple that they were black, that person would be an irritating comment away from being called a nigger.

I'm not even sure what purpose telling everyone your heritage serves. I don't tell everyone I'm an aetheist white male because it doesn't matter. But if I did, I wouldn't be surprised if someone called me a cracker.

Just saying...
SacredDigits (102 D)

Darwyn, you're a cracker.
no worries Darwyn you brought my heritage into it plenty of times, which is why you got the PMs. And I never told you till later, you assumed rightly
Darwyn (1601 D)

@ Sacred - :*( *sniff*

@Santa - I never brought your heritage anywhere and I never knew it until you told me.
Great internet's a cesspool, anything should go. Ill go back to spending 15 seconds spamming Maple's feed every time he uses a slur like i have been doing. Self policing is a great thing

As a hook niosed kike myself, I'd like to weigh in. As far as I'm concerned, people should take personal responsibility for themselves and what they say. Someone wears a Nazi armband or sends some ridiculous anti-jewish abuse my way, I will and have broken their jaw. They were asking for a response, they got one. However its gotta be pretty bad to even deserve a response. If what Maple did crossed your line s
Santa, make him face the consequences by avoiding him yourself, whooping his ass in a game or sending some insults of your own, but if you break the rules, you have to deal with the consequences as well. I mean if I break someones jaw I have to deal with the law, and I do. (Fortunately being Jewish I have Lawyers and insurance brokers in my family who make dealing with those consequences a bit easier ;-) ).

Also has anyone considered that as a troll, this thread shows Santa as being extremely skilled in that? I mean look how mad some of us are.

P.S. Maple is a nuisance sometimes, but he is entertaining. Like a jester or a village idiot. Or like a madfly, like socrates.

If you find racial and homophobic attacks entertaining, you should really look into some psychotherapy. I'm sure you find Hitler to be a fucking riot.
Holy shit, this thread is still going? Draugnar, please let it go. Some people find offensive things funny. It doesn't make you any more in need of psychotherapy than taking offensive things way too seriously does.

I oppose censorship in any form. I prefer unmoderated discussion to moderated. I don't agree that any words are off limits, but there are some I don't use for any reason. I usually choose not to associate with anyone who uses them, as well. As Darwyn points out, either we have free speech, or we don't. Of course, freedom of speech doesn't mean that there aren't consequences of what you choose to say.

OTOH, if someone is costing a community more effort/drama than the value they add, it is usually in the community's best interest to just get rid of that person. This is because if someone is very disruptive, either they've got to go or the community will wither and die as those who actually add value choose not to participate.

The best solution would be to allow users to ignore those they choose to ignore, for any reason. I've already discussed an idea to allow users to specify players with whom they don't want to play games. I would also add the capability to blacklist users from forum threads that someone creates, *and* not to see threads that haven't blacklisted that user. If A thinks B is such an odious person that A doesn't want to see B's existence anymore, then any particular thread creator would have to choose between A or B.

But that would probably be quite the tough capability to implement! It's probably highly impractical.

If this were my board, or if I were a moderator, the message would be very simple. Play nice, or get out. Does anyone really need this sort of angst/drama?
figlesquidge (2131 D)

^^ I agree it would be nice to ban someone from your PMs, but to ban their posts on the forum would be really annoying for anyone else, since you would then post without knowing/reading what they'd put.
grep5000 (223 D)
01 Apr 11 UTC
@figle, agreed, /ignore is wonderful in irc, for instance, except that you see only parts of conversations! That's why I suggested (the obviously impractical) notion of ignoring whole threads, if the person I'm explicitly ignoring is allowed to post to them.

That's why I say the more practical solution, if a busy one for moderators at times, is to ask people who use the site in a disruptive manner to cut it out or lose forum privileges. Offensive epithets don't add a scintilla of value to this site.
figlesquidge (2131 D)

Actually, ignoring whole threads is already a feature. Just don't hit "open."

I agree that a PM blacklist is important. But, muting people in threads could start to get very confusing.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
02 Apr 11 UTC
I don't see the problem with threads. If I have someone blacklisted with the option of not seeing their posts, then I don't see their posts. If someone responds to that person, then their response may not make entire sense, but is that so horrible? On the other hand, if the response was something like "mapleleaf you are such an ass", then it makes entire sense.

On another board I'm on, when you ignore someone, you can still tell that they posted, it just doesn't show you the text of their post. And it has a link you can click to go ahead and show the text if you feel the need to peek. It works pretty well.

I was playing a live gunboat, but Turkey and Russia totally CHEATED!! It was so unfair! They were clearly multi-accounting, and the mods won't do anything! Anybody who breaks any of the ingame or forum rules should be immediately banned. I even spammed the shit out of every mod's inbox and they still haven't responded within the last 5 minutes!!!

What if 7 players were to get together and play the game the way two would? England Tactics (Full Press)
Is it worth risking France getting the easy SCs in Spain and Portugal in order to get easy SCs off Russia, who seems to never expect an English attack?

Such a tactic wouldn't work in a gunboat due to France's occasional tendency to open to EC instead of MAO.
