A question of priorities...
What would be regarded the better result in a points per supply centre game. A draw between you and three other people earning 1/4 of the points, or merely surviving but earning a greater number of points?

(Let's assume the draw followed a hard thought game, and wasn't just due to people wanting to leave early like in some live games I could mention... grumble...)

A forum discussion game
Some of us are rather new here and would like to improve. I know one of the rules is that you do not comment on ongoing games in the forum, but I would like to create a game where the players will get comments from the forum.
The game is gameID=25056 and the password is 'forum'

V for Vendetta
I have recently discovered that I have, lurking deep within my soul, a weakness I'd been blissfully unaware of. After a spell of truly awful play, messages, and poor attendance from a rival player the red mist descended to the point that I would have been happier defeating him totally than winning the game. Is this a common feeling? Are there any techniques to fight it??? Help!

Via Land/Via Convoy
So maybe I am just naive, but is there ever a reason why you would want to select 'via convoy' instead of 'via land' when you have the option? This pops up whenever you've got the choice of an army going on it's own steam or being ferried by an adjacent navy, and I respect that they left the option in here, but is there ever a situation when anybody would convoy an army from Ankara to Constantinople instead of just marching the army overland?

gunboat vs. regular games
personally i find gunboat games to be boring, slow paced, and outrageously unskilled. there is no diplomacy involved.

but being a fair man, i will hear out other peoples attacks or defense for gunboat games.
please post your views!

Trouble hosting webDiplomacy server.
I set up everything according to the directions (or so I thought) but when I try to access the webpage I get "Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class Variant in C:\XAMPP\xampp\htdocs\variants\variant.php on line 34". I've also posted on the sourceforge page but have gotten no response. Anyone know what's up?

Variant Ideas
I've just been rolling these concepts for game-changes around for awhile, and wanted to lob them at the self-proclaimed "pros" on WebDip.

First is a railway variant. The home centers of each nation are connected by a single railway, and it would operate under the same rules as the Transiberian as seen in the colonial variant. Each Winter adjustment phase, a player is able to lay or tear up tracks connecting any two provinces they own. They are able to do this twice per winter adjustment phase. (For those of you unfamiliar with the colonial variant, the basic gist is that railroads allow for instintaneous movement between spaces connected by the railroad).

On further reflection, the second variant is not as sound as the first, but I'll post it anyway because I hinted at its' existence by saying "First up..."

Basically this variant tries to take the intense negotiation, simplified tactics, and the reliance on allies that the opening provides. In this variant powers are only allowed to build units by capturing the initial neutral centers. Capture of an already owned center does not give a build.

However, if all the home centers of one power are owned by another power at the same time, control of that power's units transfer to the invader. Play continues until one player owns four powers.

I once heard a reference to a varient that uses the classic map, but every single home supply center is it's own country. Thus you get 22 countries with one sc each. I suppose you could do one in which every sc gets its own player, but that would be a really grinding slow start, I would think...

Oh, that's the "Chaos" variant, and it's 34 players.

Hm, maybe that could be extended into a "Pandemonium" Variant, where every province is an SC, and every SC is owned by an individual player.

How about a map of the modern middle-east? Pakistan, Afgahnastan, Iran, Iraq,
Saudi Arabia, Israel, and Egypt? It would be kind of amusing. Maybe Padistan, Iran and Israel could each have a nuclear bomb or two--the ability to displace/destroy a unit anywhere on the board.
Any refinements to the idea? I'm sure some one has already thought of this...

I'd be interested in a "feudal" variant. You start with 22 players, on teams by country. Each one gets a vote for the king, who hands in orders for the power. Every time there's a build in your original SC, you get another vote.

If you want, you can hand in moves for any units built in your home SC. These moves supercede the king's orders for your units.

End of the game, the king gets half the points for a win; other players each get 1/4.

Chaos is available here: http://oli.rhoen.de/webdiplomacy/index.php and here http://goondip.com/index.php

Feudal would be interesting for the king at least...

could you change kingdom?
I'd like to see bolshevik, it is an 8 player variant on the normal map where the 8th player starts with no units, but at some point of their choosing takes over half a country (any country, again of their choice)

The bolshevik revolution usually hits the biggest country, and thus acts to balance games where one player is about to win a solo...
