This is a general question, or even debate based on why we change who we really are on the internet, and the reasons behind it.

Longer Turns
That's it, I've had it. I'm so freakin' tired of going from diong great in my games to doing shitty, just by missing one freakin' turn. I really need to hear some of you agree with me that we need some longer deadlines.

Intensive Press Game
I would be interested in starting up an intensive press game. This is not for the faint hearted, and would involve only those who have the time to post at length about tactics, as well as life, the universe and everything. The idea is to get dialogue going, not to have one word answers to discussions of tactics, which happens all too frequently.

If you are interested, please post below. It would also be for a mid-ranking pot to spice thing up a bit.

WTA doesn't work - so I guess that's it.
This is a long complaint, a whine if you wish, and most of it is a re-emphasis of my philosophy that Diplomacy should be all about playing to win.

Please don't bother reading this if you aren't interested, it will waste 10 minutes of your life you will never get back. There is a serious debate to be had here, if all you want is to abuse me then start a new thread called "Noodlebug sucks" or something.

My complaint is against a class of people who play in games but do not try to win them. These people have a completely different philosophy to mine. I do not agree with them, but they have a right to play the way they play. I just wish they would stick to PPS games to do it rather than ruining WTA games...

Noodlebug sucks
i could agree to let you win in that particular game you're complaining about. you said your two options are a) agree to a draw (still open), b) fight to the death (probably meaning try to win, right?)

now you have c) france & italy let me win, i win after a long time, and i'm happy
Noodlebug (1812 D)

The result of the game is irrelevant in the big scheme of things, and you haven't done anything wrong at all. If people want to play for profit, or irrationally, or suicidally that is their choice. You can't ban people from being what they are or doing what they do.

It is the system that is flawed, not the actions of individuals. If the system worked, you would have no incentive to come into a WTA game and play your tactics and offer draws, and people who want to play games to the end can get on with it unimpeded. All we want (and I'm now confident it is not just me!) are games where a winner is decided, where winning is the only thing that matters and the artificial concepts of points or profits don't have any impact at all on the game.

I'm interested in the bigger picture here, you and fwancophile are quite welcome to the spoils of your enterprise. If you can finish me off.
alamothe (3367 D(B))

you wouldn't be complaining if we were letting you win, instead of striving to stop you from winning
Noodlebug (1812 D)
05 Apr 08 UTC
I wouldn't be complaining but I would be raising my concerns and having the same discussion. I'd be looking across the board at whichever innocent party was suffering from your actions and thinking "there but for the grace of destiny go I." And in the next game, it could just as well be me. I want to avoid that situation arising altogether, for anyone.

If every player isn't trying to win, the game is decided by chance rather than skill. I don't especially like winning through luck (and I'll admit many of my wins have come from players acting against their own interests), and I certainly don't like losing through luck.

and italy & i are lucky in this game how?? and who of us is not trying to win in this game? probably russia more than italy
Noodlebug (1812 D)
05 Apr 08 UTC
You are lucky in this game because Italy has shielded you. I too was lucky in that Austria allowed me to get a great start then caved in. If Italy had been trying to win he would have allowed me to attack you, we would both have been weaker and he would have been stronger. But he was afraid I was actually intending to attack him, even though that would have been both pointless, fruitless and harmful to my interests at that time.

Italy was lucky in that you offered him a draw when it is almost impossible for a competent player not to win from your position!

And Italy is the only player on the board not trying to stop France (in fact, actively preventing others from stopping France). The outcome of that behaviour is most decidedly not an Italian win. No-one but France can win if France is not stopped quickly.
alamothe (3367 D(B))

then you must be terribly unlucky :-)
Noodlebug (1812 D)
05 Apr 08 UTC
If everyone in this game was trying to win, Italy, Russia and I (probably even Austria and England) would be in a better position than we are right now, and you would be in a worse position. The outcome of the game would be anybody's guess. But it just takes one player to destroy his own ambitions, for whatever reason, and dedicate himself to the assistance of another, and that can end the game as a competition.

An alliance is meant to be mutually beneficial to both parties. Austria's alliance with me was equally self-destructive, but without the same devestating consequence.

So am I unlucky that in my test game for Winner Takes All, I encounter at least 2, possibly 3 players who play in a way that kills their chances of winning? Or am I lucky that I found out quickly in my first game that there is a problem here, and Winner Takes All does not necessarily do what it says on the tin?
fwancophile (164 D)
05 Apr 08 UTC
yea but overlook a bunch of factors - that you did intend to attack, that you broke your word repeatedly, and that you had no real scenario for a france attack.
alamothe (3367 D(B))

your test failed because you aren't winning? both austria & russia were your pets the whole game. and the game is still not decided

Noodlebug (1812 D)

People can look at the game for themselves, alamothe, they are not stupid.

You don't need propaganda any more. If you want victory, take it, and if you want to share your profits with Italy, finish me off. There's no point publicly dissecting an ongoing game, even using fwancophile's clairvoyance!

I brought an issue to the forum, in that there is a problem with the winner takes all system, which this game demonstrates. There are matters to be debated here that are way more important than alamothe and fwancophile and Noodlebug, that are relevant to every single WTA game and which go to the heart of why the WTA system was introduced.

I'm sure no-one wants to read your petty gripes about irrelevant details specific only to one game, and I'm sorry you drew me into this thread.

Bug?
During the retreat phase, when a country has nowhere to retreat their unit it is automatically destroyed.

yet the game doesn't resolve it like that, it waits for the person to disband and finalize the order, or for the time limit to pass and it automatically disbands.

Is there an arguement for keeping it as is?

Question: Retreating
Have a quick question. If I were to attack Finland from St Petersburg, with aid from Sweden, would the retreating army be allowed to retreat to St Petersburg? Please not that there is occupying foces in Norway and Sweden, but the army in St. Petersburg is coming into Norway, leaving that region free.

Why I love Trolling
It's such a rush posting controversial but totally irrelevant threads which are supposed to show everyone how cool and unconventional and nonconformist I am, it's just such a shame that people read them and shake their heads and think "what a numpty." Because I'm daring and challenge authority at every turn and don't obey the rules because I'm too cool for school, I use rude words like a three year old to show how grown up I am and I encourage anti-social behaviour which will solve all society's ills by making bread £3 a loaf because the stores have to cover the cost of idiots like me stealing it, which of course forces more people to have to earn more money to feed themselves and become mercenary consumer slaves to the capitalist system so that I can make them feel even worse about themselves while Daddy bails me out yet again next time I go too far.
Of course I'm jealous of those real revolutionaries who are actually out there doing genuine protests and standing up for their beliefs and quietly getting on with living an ethical life without feeling the need to broadcast it to everyone, but I don't have the time because I'm too busy spreading the message to all the people who don't want to hear it. Because if the revolution is going to come, the people who are going to start it are obviously the people who play internet strategy games, and besides the moderators kicked me off all the serious anti-capitalist and environmentalist websites because they said I was "off message". They're all wrong and I'm right because I know I'm right and it's not about how many people agree with you it's about how much you believe in yourself. And yeah some people are genuine fruitcakes but not me because I talk sense.
