Geography Quiz
What is the world's largest desert?
wjessop (100 DX)
13 Feb 16 UTC

The obvious answer for most people would be the Sahara. But opening up from certain misconceptions commonly attached to the word 'desert' (such as that a desert must be hot, or have sand), the largest area of inhospitable land on Earth is Antarctica.

Judge! Antarctica is frozen water on soil?, the bottom of the oceans are water on soil?
Connected oceanfloor>antarctica?
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

The largest desert on Earth is therefore a connected landmass of the largely uninhabited surfaces of the ocean floor and the largely uninhabited surfaces above the ocean floor, including places like Antarctica and the Sahara. I win.
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
13 Feb 16 UTC
@ Wjessop:

That's easy. The capital of South Africa is Pretoria, Cape Town, and Bloemfontein.

(An alternative, and also correct answer, is "none")
steephie22 (182 D(S))

I'm pretty sure the ocean floors are far from inhabited.
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
13 Feb 16 UTC
A desert is a barren area of dry terrain. The ocean floor isn't usually dry.

Zybodia (355 D)

Specifically, "dry" here means less than ten inches of precipitation per year. While it may not hit the ocean floor, the ocean gets plenty of precipitation. (So while the answer given was correct, the reasoning was less so.)
wjessop (100 DX)
13 Feb 16 UTC
The Sahara Desert gets more precipitation than Antarctica.

Sorry by Pretoria I assume you mean Tshwane.
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
14 Feb 16 UTC
Tshwane is the name of the municipal area that includes Pretoria. The city itself is called Pretoria. There have been calls to change the name of the city to Tshwane but this has not actually been enacted yet. The official name of the city remains "Pretoria" and for me to have referred to it as "Tshwane" in response to wjessop's question would have caused confusion, as well as being legally inaccurate.
Putin33 (111 D)
14 Feb 16 UTC
I thought they changed it officially last year. Certainly some news articles need to be retracted then.
wjessop (100 DX)
14 Feb 16 UTC
Jamie's explanation is exactly right.

South Africans don't even refer to it commonly as Tshwane.

Balon Greyjoy
So I find it interesting that based on the photos for Season 6 the show appears poised to go forward with the Ironborn Plot. I feel like they sort of "missed the boat" (ahah) on this. Balon should have died way back in Season 3. Now ironically enough by pacing it out the way they have you could argue Balon won the war of the five kings. (Hes the only one still alive among them!!)

How do you pick your allies?
Do you go into a game with a preconceived idea of who you want to ally with? Do you choose based on the country, the press, or the personalities? Do you choose your ally based on your target's press, or your ally's press? What goes in to your decision process?

Making a parametric description
Hi guys,
I want to make a parametric description as the basis for my logo, so it has to look pretty enough for that. Can I create the graph online or using some downloadable software? My graphic calculator doesn't really make it a pretty picture.
I just want to enter the parameters etc. and print the result.
