Homeschooling would be excellent for those that have an issue with the public school curriculum and would have trouble affording a decent private school, though in my opinion, a good private school is far preferable to home schooling even if the parents are confident in their abilities. That said, I'm not one to impede on the choices someone makes within their own family, so if someone wants to home school their child, who am I to tell them otherwise?
Obviously I don't have any kids, but I assisted in a first grade classroom for five years and watched them as they went into fifth and sixth grade, and I volunteer with Special Olympics, which I'd argue is more competitive at the higher levels than most other rec leagues. I was there last weekend for the state football tournament and one of the players on my team is 5 (4 at the beginning of the year). We were down something like 57-0, so I talked to the other team and they agreed to let him score one. So, I gave him the ball, he ran, and started to trip, so one of my other players picked him up and ran him toward the end zone as the other team intentionally dove and missed. Of course, being 5, he had no idea they were missing on purpose, so he scored his first touchdown.
I could have cried when his father told me later that seeing that was "worth all the practices" through the entire season.
Also, congrats Jim. I don't think many other people got your allusion, but congrats.
