Sick of the Liars!
Ok, so I've just inflamed half a dozen trolls who are reading this this morning. Going to enjoy hearing from them all day. But it isn't the trolls that have me down. It is the liars!

Great American Political Quotes
Europe is so different than America that European political philosophy has little relevance in the United States. (2012 should keep it that way as well).
I dedicate this thread to American political quotes.

Check out this guy - Machiavelli is right
gameID=77832

In a 5 minute live game, Turkey, Russia, and England don't show up. I (playing France) move immediately to Cancel and Austria, some guy named Octopus_seppuku, refuses and quite obviously wins due to the Balkans, Turkey and Russia being uncontested. I just find that very poor sportsmanship and not in the spirit of the game. I guess he needed to pad his rating or something. How utterly base and sad.

Arizona Bans Mexican/Native-American Texts From Classes, Including...Shakespeare?!
http://www.salon.com/2012/01/13/whos_afraid_of_the_tempest/singleton/
In a meeting this week, administrators informed Mexican-American studies teachers to stay away from any units where “race, ethnicity and oppression are central themes,” including the teaching of Shakespeare’s classic ["The Tempest"] in Mexican-American literature courses.
1. What is up with Arizona's Latino-phobia, and 2. Really...Shakespeare banned as Latino Lit? O.O

Newbie question
I'm new to the site and am looking at "Bye, Points" active game. Says no in game messaging, anomymous players. Yet I see Italy supporting Austria and another cooperation later in the game. How does this happen? Doen't look like a lucky guess to me

You get to sort them in the order you'd rather play them. For example, if I like playing A,G and R, and I detest playing Italy, my list would be AFI / GE / RT or something of that nature. This makes it slightly more likely that I get A, G or R than the ones that come lower down on each of those lists.
uclabb (589 D)

Oh, I thought that the first group corresponded to the first game, the second to the second game, and the third to the third game, which was wrong. Thanks!

I'm not sure I understand the preference system correctly, could you clarify that for me?
If I set my preferences to EF / ATI / GR (for example) will that mean that I will get either E or F for game 1, A,T or I for game two and G or R for game 3?
Or will you attempt to allocate me both E and F (first preference) and one out of ATI (second preference) if possible?
Furthermore, could I also send them in with another distribution of the group size (i.e. EF / AT / IGR)?
santosh (335 D)
13 Dec 11 UTC
They do. I'm not sure I get you. Essentially, we're submitting three preference lists by splitting the 7 countries among those three groups.

So if the list I submit is AFI / GE / RT,
then AFI is my list for Game 1,
GE my list for Game 2
and RT my list for Game 3

The allocation for each game is decided by running through everybody's preference lists from top to bottom. So in Game 1, if Austria doesn't figure on top of anyone else's list, I get Austria. If it also figures on top of your list, neither of us gets Austria, and we're both moved a spot down on our list. Does that clear things up a bit more?
santosh (335 D)
13 Dec 11 UTC
^ was to uclabb, but the second half should clarify Maettu's points as well.

You'll have to split the 7 countries into two groups of 2 each and one group of three, but once you've split them like that, you can assign them to games any way you like.

How do you join
santosh (335 D)
13 Dec 11 UTC
We're into the second round of this year's tournament, so you can't join right now. But there will be a call for participation around September next year again, and then we pick the top 28 people by GR, so lookout for that one. We do keep needing people when others have to drop out, so there is a back-up list somewhere that is always open.
Maettu (7933 D)
13 Dec 11 UTC
Thanks for clarifying, I understand how the list work now.

Doesn't feel too neat a system to me as it is quite random (i.e. if two players choose the same country first for game 1 we both get "punished" (and lets face it, its somewhat random how I allocate the lists between group 1, 2 and 3) while others are lucky enough to avoid that and get the countries they want).

Wouldn't it make more sense if all the players just post their wish-list (order of countries)? Then you could simply distribute the countries amongst the players and then alocate them to the games. That way at least everybody would get the countries (or at least 3 out of the top 4-5) they want.

I'd even prefer a completely random distribution, but then again its your decision.
santosh (335 D)
13 Dec 11 UTC
It's the best you can do with a preference-based system, really. You're right in the first observation, but the way to look at it is it incentivizes putting up less popular countries as your first preference, so you end up with a country you're fine with playing, instead of one you randomly ended up with because the more popular options clashed.

We did random for the first round, and I thought that ended up being a bit skewed, so I'm trying to see if this makes things more even.
Maettu (7933 D)
13 Dec 11 UTC
I'm quite sure there have to be better systems out there. There have to, really.

For example the preference-list worked quite well for one game (we usually used that to distribute countries for our ppm games years ago) and I would expect it isn't any different for three parallel games.

Basically everyone wrote a preference list (1-7) with all the countries. Then we tried to give everyone a country as high up on the list as possible.

@Lando: Yes, the three of you qualify for the finals, plus possibly a fourth depending on how Group X games end, which might take a while considering they're all still ~ 1907.

It Happened in 1912...Will Another GOP 7-10 Split Help Obama Win like Wilson in 1912?
Everyone knows the story--William Howard Taft got the GOP nomination in 1912 (more due to Taft's being friends and more laissez-faire than actual popularity in regards to the powers that be than TR) but Teddy Roosevelt still had so much solo-name-starpower he became the most successful 3rd party candidate ever...but BOTH LOST to some fellow the Democrats ran by the name of Woodrow Wilson, due in large part to a split GOP vote. Do you think Romney/RP/Obama=Roosevelt/Taft/Wilson, 2012=1912?
