A Tribute to Mr. Calhamer
Draugnar pointed out that this is the creator of Diplomacy's 80th birthday coming up this December 7th and I've got an idea on how we can say thanks in a way that shows him just how many and how far his game has captured across the world.

Hypothetical move
Let's assume that St. Petersburg is surrounded. Norway and Finland are going to support Barents Sea in. Armies in Livonia and Moscow could support the hold in St. Pete's, but a German army may cut Livonian support. If St. Petersburg hits Norway to cut support, and Moscow supports Livonia into St. petetersburg, would everyone bounce?

This was one of the most frustrating gunboats I have been in. Likely has to do with its PPSC nature. Would appreciate others' comments on this one.

Stratagos (Russia) - what the hell, man? We were so close to getting to a stalemate line. or at least a quasi-one. Why did you throw in the towel and fall on me? I was a loyal ally all game. I figured you would understand that I moved to TRI to stop our enemies from getting it.

France - Why on earth did you never stab Germany? Even when he got to like 15 or so, you never did anything. Why? You would have gotten more points from a three-way draw and you might have had a chance to play for a solo yourself. I understand it was PPSC, but your actions were still unexplainable.

Germany - what was witht he endgame? Why did you take so long to solo? I was trying to give it to you. Were you seeing if you could get France to 16 SCs or something? I wonder how you knew he would play along in a gunboat game.

This game demonstrated the weirdest things ever in gunboats. Would love to know what others were thinking. It would be hella educational.

I think the white country should have stabbed sooner. He might have won if he had.
What?

If it was an Italian army in Tyrolia, there would be no discussion and FG would never even get 18 SCs. Curious to what the others will say.

Lando, you took four centers that turn *and* had worked fairly well with italy prior to stabbing him. It sure as he'll looked like you were going to try for a three way, with me being the big lose.

I submit that stabbing italy and at the same time taking one of my centers *while giving no other indication that you were willing to work with me * was a mistake, and if there is a 50% choice between believing someone will still work with me after a stab or they're going to screw me, I will nearly always choose to take them down with me
Strat, you really should have given it one more turn at least. That way if they do keep trying to screw you then you still have time to take them down, whereas if they don't you don't end up losing a stalemate line and allowing a German solo for nothing. Besides, Turkey wasn't going to be able to get to a stable 3wd position anyway, FG had too big an advantage.
I don't see how it was 50%. Consider this, in chronological order:

-G/F seem inspeperable and we are already struggling to hold a line
-in the fall, I tried to move out of TRI
- I did not build an army in SMY
- in Spring, i move nowhere anywhere near you.

I don;t understand why you pulled the plug on both of us before I had the chance to even show anything. I mean, disband in VIE?? Really?

Your reaction was almost analagous to: Russia takes GAL in S01 on a supposed DMZ. Austria move sout of all of his centres and let's Turkey and Italy take them.

Maybe you saw the game very differently than me, but I have no idea how you saw my moves as an attack. France was in TYR for crying out loud!! What was I supposed to do, let him take TRI for the sake of our agreement?

Have some trust, bro. How do you expect to get small draws in gunboats if you don't think through the other players moves from more than one perspective?

Part of the problem with too many games running is you don't keep as close of track tof

the historical record, but it is what it is. Sorry Lando, but IMO it was a mistake to stab someone - italy specifically - who had been working with us to set up a stalemate. I tend to think a draw is a draw is a draw, so your choice to eliminate Italy was poorly timed, and not worth the minor increase in the pot size
I suppose, but it had been the goal I was working towards for some time. I wish you had seen that. I thought I had set him up perfectly, and it is that kind of goal that does make things worth it for me.

To Lando's questions of why Germany took so long to solo, he was trying to support me into a 17/17 draw. I like to let people survive, and I like to see someone win when they can, and Germany did deserve this one. But I also thought Turkey played well and deserved not to be wiped out. I thought there was a lot of good play from everyone, but it ended up to us three.

As for why I did not stab Germany, I tend not to play that way. I know it is a big part of the game, and I have done it as well. But usually, when I find I can work well with someone, I never turn on them. Germany and I both gave good indications of not going after each other with holding supports and moving away from each other's SCs, so I simply kept my unspoken commitment to my German ally. I would most likely have done the same thing in a WTA. I don't mean to frustrate you further, but I prefer the honor of sticking with your partners, even if it means I will only survive or lose.

Hope that helped everyone's understanding.

As Italy I can say that I was very frustrated to be taken out at risk of losing a stalemate line. I had played along for the draw perfectly to stop the sealion. But I knew it was bound to happen as most people hate 5way draws. What really baffled me was that you attacked Russia as well in the same turn, Made no sense at all.

Also, I was left wondering why you preferred to allow France into Venice than to let me build a second unit there the year after the stab.
i didn'tmean to let him in, he just got in. and i didn't attack russia, i am surprised people saw it that way. live and learn.

Are discussions of banned players allowed on the forum?
Obviously cheating accusations aren't, but I seem to recall hearing that we're allowed to discuss players banned for cheating openly, and I'm curious as to the story behind some of the recently-banned players... seems like some familiar names are out.
