Interesting choice! I agree Turkey is a fairly good option. My favourite, that I always tend to hope for while the clock ticks down, is usually England.

Turkey seems to be the hot favourite. Italy and Austria often tend to be the ones where people resign early or if they do play then they just launch themselves all out because they despise playing that country.

I'll take France with Germany as a close second.

Yeah that was me... in full press. Gunboat ain't much better due to the implicit AI alliance but you can generally block the Lepanto easy enough (and presuming you're patient you won't lose Bulgaria). Eventually the AI breaks down to internal pressure or French intervention. And if the Lepanto isn't coming then you're off to a good game!

Much unlike the normal game where you either get AIR'd, Lepanto'd, IR'd after Austria dies or IR'd before he dies because Austria stupidly thinks of Turkey as an unequivocal enemy instead of a functional ally. At least in gunboat the lack of quick coordination lets Turkey hang on long enough not to die.

No, I don't. Turkey gave you a ridiculous amount of leeway by being a tard and keeping me out of Rumania and continuing to attack Sevastopol after you took Bulgaria from him. Combine that with an EG and of course I went down.

I find it pretty laughable that you think I suck at Russia, though, considering I have more solos as Russia than you have solos, period.

@hwh: You're wrong. Eden didn't play badly that game, in fact he played rather well. He made a standard 1901 move, got jumped immediately by Turkey, and got denied Sweden (for non-obvious reasons). In the following, he was continuusly attacked by E,G and T.

Start with 0 builds as Russia, and you're happy to survive beyond 1904. Instead, Eden got his first disband as late as 1905 (when Italy was almost eliminated already).

So, no, you shouldn't blame Eden for losing that game.

Thanks for the great response, it's very interesting to see everyone's opinions like this. I was surprised England didn't get more votes and that Italy got more - why don't people like to play as the English?

voted for austria because it's a complete beast if Italy doesn't do anything silly, which it usually doesn't. by the numbers and consistency gotta go with f/g, though. but i've been starting to find france boring lately

Austria is a beast in the games where you're not the first in line, that's true.

England is pretty good, but it frustrates the crap out of me. I usually end up spending the first hour of any given LAG where I'm England on defending myself from France before I get a lucky break and get off the a decent game.

@jmeyers me too about france. I probably need to change my approach. They are by far my best stat wise (without checking).

Recently for me it is all about Italy. I can't figure them out in press games but so fun in Gunboat. That is, if you can get past the 4sc mark.

same. it's really hard for me to break out my PAR-BUR, MAR s PAR-BUR, BRE-MAO routine. It's just so darn good. And then 9/10 times I end up moving to NAO/MAO in spring of '03 and convoying to CLY/LVP.
Any suggestions out there as to how to keep it interesting?

oh and it's amazing. I can't remember the last time I got a gunboat Italy. But I do specifically remember that the last two times austria opened in '01 with vie-tyl, bud-tri, tri-adr. Twice in a row!
I think that kinda killed the part of me that liked Italy.

The only other thing I try is to go right for Italy. I never go after Germany nor do I have any idea on how one could be successful doing it.

don't really know, it can be beneficial to time it so that i get into lvp in the fall on occasion. it seems like if mao-nao in fall '02, england gets 2 seasons to try and defend lvp.
i do both depending on the situation.
